Scores of not-iPhones, for anyone looking for an android OS smartphone, literally hundreds of different models of android phones from a dozen or so different electronics companies.

Based on modified open-source linux & the linux kernel, android specifically designed for touchscreen mobile devices like smartphones or tablets, though it can be seen in Chromebook laptops too.

Google, daughter company of parent Alphabet inc, widely known to be the primary developer of android in its most widely utilized versions in mobile electronics as the OS. In 2008, the HTC Dream smartphone was first to feature the android operating system.

Smartphones are not all roses and sunshine. Human health issues like text neck, thumb fatigue or wear of the synovial joint of the hands thumbs used to interact with these touchscreens for hours per day compared to using a full sizes keyboard on a laptop or desktop with all or most of your fingers.

This is also why smartphones, smart watches, and tablets are better for observing contents while laptops and desktops are better for producing content or productivity related business applications. The full sized mechanical keyboard & mouse superior for CAD, CAE, writing, video editing, making music & more.

Additional issues surrounding the overuse of mobile internet devices or wireless data smartphones stem from social disconnectedness and information overload disorder due to observation of the 24/7 news cycle, social media postings and ads & additional online content of movies, music, blogs like this one & more.

Mobile chips are called SOC or SIP for system on a chip or system in a package, such that TSMC's latest 5nm & 3nm & emerging 1.6nm nodes are used to make mobile chips of superior power efficiency so that our smartwatches, wearables, IoT can connect to wifi or LTE while running on tiny low capacity li-ion batteries that can be recharged a few hundred times before they start losing their capacity, or before the runtime per charge starts to decrease, sometimes leading users of smartphones to change the battery instead of buying a new one, noting that current flagship smartphones cost over $1000 now, far more for the folding models & the top of the lineup which have phablet sized touchscreens that are as bright as 3000nits for sunlight readability, many are Super AMOLED+ made by Samsung, even though Sony invented & commercialized both lithium ion batteries & OLED screens before anyone else!

Android features a base OS system from AOSP or the android open source project, also FOSS or free-and-open-source software, primarily under the Apache license, though most devices use version developed by Google featuring many brand specific pre-installed software apps with Google names. Googles versions of android run on over 70% of smartphones featuring android OS, though vendors like HTC add things like TouchWiz UI or user interface specific software. One UI from Samsung, or forked competing OS such as Amazon's Fire OS, or Oppo's ColorOS.

Many consumer electronics like game consoles, wifi routers, digital cameras, portable media players, smart TV, tablets, testing equipment, scientific gear, technical equipment, stereo gear or consumer electronics feature custom variants of android. Most wearables for example have a slimed down version like Wear OS optimized for low power battery energized smart watches.

Software distributed with APK format on the Google Play Store or Samsung Galaxy Store. The best selling OS in the world since 2011 with more than 3 billion active users, the largest installation base of any operating system in the world. The Google Play Store features over 3 million applications. As of October 4th 2023 Android 14 was the latest release, while 12.1 and 12L are optimize for folding smartphones, tablets, desktop screens, and for Chrome OS Chromebook laptops.

Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Christ White founded Android Inc in 2003, Palo Alto, California, with the goal of the Android project to as as the OS in smart mobile devices able to make value added functions by the users location & preferences.

Android was originally envisioned to operate digital cameras, but later refocused for mobile handset devices that sell in much greater quantities. This meant that at this time in 2004 android would be up against Symbian & Windows Mobile, which I find comical given how Android is now the dominate mobile electronic OS while Microsoft Windows Mobile OS a fading memory.

Google acquired Android Inc in 2005 for around $50 million, making it the best deal to come from Google corporate developments. Remember that Google was a search engine, and search engines are designed to connect buyers to sellers in increasingly novel ways, so Google putting Android OS on so many mobile devices had tremendous commercial potential to connect android phone users to many products and services they would not know about otherwise. In this way smartphones actually helped connect people in more ways worldwide, increasing global commerce, the diffusion of wealth & prosperity & thus helped many economies around the world to create a larger middle class, more shared weather & prosperity increasing the living standard & improve the lives of millions of people around the world.

I am sure that the Meta Quest 2 VR headset I work out with using Les Mills Body Combat app makes use of Android in some variation under the hood.

In 2010 I purchased a low cost ARM-based notebook computer called a Cherry Pal Asia with Android OS version 1.7 that barely worked. Choppy, slow & glitchy, the android powered low cost Cherry Pal Asia was a complete piece of soon to be e-waste trash & a waste of the materials & time used to make it. I am not even sure what happened to it, probably became a door stop & then recycled at a e-waste recycler nearby, in King Country, Washington State, USA.
