News paper, printed, made up on internet connected graphical design & publishing computers using information downloaded from online sourced from the world wide 24 hour per day persistent news cycle that the editor & writers then rework into page layouts, which are then sent via email to the web to web high volume offset printing systems to be etched by lasers into aluminum sheets that are then loaded onto giant metal printing rollers, where the aluminum sheets contain the information that picks up the ink that is then pressed into the paper whirling by as the giant printing spools move paper, ink, and printing plates at blistering speeds.

Before internet diffusion or widespread adoption, most people got information via printed news papers, radio, then TV, now the worldwide web, often on their 5G or 4LTE smartphones from Apple or Samsung or several other brands or manufacturers of popular consumer electronics or COTS consumer off-the-shelf technologies.

When Amazon launched the Kindle even books became digital assets able to be download from AWS or amazon web service online. OTA meant that people could assess the worlds largest book store through their Kindle & even download over cellular dat a networks. In the future printed books will become a heavy expensive luxury. Today in early 2024 many news paper printing businesses have folded or gone bankrupt, because of the high costs of printing & moving the papers around!

As with many other things, printed news paper will be around for a long time because of Market Inertia or Technological Lock-In where large industrial businesses keep doing things a certain way because its been done that way for a long time & works & the new better way is not well known, popular, widely available & comes from up and comer smaller companies looking to make a brand name become popular, like TikTok or Reddit or YouTube. "A picture is a thousand words" then what is a video worth in terms of writing?

Image file formats are important for website energy efficiency, and so that web pages with images & videos can be responsive to users browsing these sites on their phones, tablets, laptops, computers, smart TV's or others wearable IoT or internet of things web browsers.

JPEG 2000 a very popular lossy image format that use what is known about the human visual system to take contrast B&W detail, turn it into a matrix table of data, then use Red & Blue chrominance & sample out 1/4 of the image color detail, then summarize that data in a table that uses losses table data reduction compression. JEPG file contains this contrast & color data in tiny data table files, such that color photos can be moved around online without slowing networks or access down, improving the usability of the websites by end users & making the cloud computer or servers able to handle more users with less bottlenecks.

If you're developing for the web, any efforts will be in vain if you do not work to use intelligent image & video compression like HTML5.

Many other formats like GIF, TIFF, BMP exist, & you have to consider DPI, webP, image requests, metadata, scaling, browser rendering, automated optimization tools, saving files for the web, picture elements, src reset and how images are used on the website.

More colors costs more data, though are you wanting crispy text rendering or logos, or more interested in colorful low data phones. Low bit PNG8 has tiny file sizes, but go to PNG 24 or PNG 32 if you notice color banding & dislike it.

PNG works great for graphing data and text, but drawings, logos & icons work better with SVG. JPEG contains millions of colors but not good for crispy lines or text. PNG files with only a few pixels difference can be dramatically different files sizes due to the way the data is structure in the PNG imaging format.

SVG best for transparency. JPEG does not scale well because its raster data that rejects pixel relationship information that a huge file BMP bitmap retains. Using GIMP you can selectively blur parts of JPEG photo to focus the on the important parts of the image. PNG lossless when saved or compressed. Vector information based SVG scales really well but terrible for color photos.

PNG better on retinal displays as JPEG look worse, but SVG looks best when scaling. You can always use GIMP or Photoshop to scale images, changing their file sizes. A thumbnail images for a YouTube video can be very low resolution, but needs text in the photo too.

I was doing early imaging research to figure out what kind of imaging to work with when laser etching on the new xTool F1 diode fiber laser engraver. Fortunately LightBurn & other XCS software has a lot of the complicated details worked out, but I have been long color inject printing on an EPSON photo printer with continuous ink system upgrade. I also have a brother B&W laser printer on my desk :) Laser etching was a way to get computer images & graphical art that I make with pencils & then photo capture & edit on my phone, then put onto my computer, to upload.

Here is an example of a fake NFT that I put on X or twitter to make fun of NFTs. This was done on the back of junk mail from the physical postal mail delivery service by USPS or the United States Postal Service. It's white paper with graphite mechanical pencil. The stuff inside the envelope was color printed, so the iPhone 14 images captured this & colored light from around the room, producing color variations that I used photo editing to increase the saturation, I changed a lot of other settings too to make the image very unique or highly distinctive, in the spirt of the NFT or non fungible token, part of the emerging crypto or crypto currency markets worldwide.
