Most EV owners & lessees have Level 2 chargers' setup in their homes garage where they park their EV at nighttime & some even have an EVSE L1 charger plugged into a typical outdoor electrical outlet on their home for all night slow charging speeds which only add a few miles of charge to the EV battery per hour of charging.
Thankfully most EV drivers park their cars at home for 8+ hours on most days, giving ample opportunity to pick up useful commuting range levels of battery charge to energize an EV commute without public charging station use. They installed a bunch of Level 2 pedestal charging stations parking spaces at Anthology the overpriced luxury apartment complex we live in with my elderly disabled mother.
Thankfully this cost sharing enables me to have enough extra income to support my electronic & technology addition which culminated in the purchase of an 128GB iPhone 14 "Starlight" while a $10 aftermarket case + screen & camera protector kit via Amazon.com Prime on its way with overnight shipping, given the $180 per year price of Prime I should hope they offer faster shipping options, especially since I live ~10 miles from Amazon's OG headquarters & where Jeff Bezos lives :) near his Blue Origin spacecraft company & other cool aerospace companies like Space Based Mining & Boeing :) Microsoft also local, so the housing very expensive nearby with price inflation of 500% in the last 10 years.
Many high-income locals are driving brand new or relatively new model year electric vehicles or Plug-in Hybrids or Hybrid Electric vehicles. I am still driving my vintage 2005 Prius II & Meg's daily driver a 2010 Prius 3 / they both get 40-50 MPG on regular unleaded E10 gasoline sold for over $4 per gallon locally lately, while other parts of America pay 30-60% less for the same exact fuel that is chemically & energetically identical in composition & energy content, or identical 87 octane gasoline or gasohol since it contains up to 10% GMO corn ethanol by volume.
So EV are trending with the world's automakers, like VW the world's largest automaker & Toyota & Tesla, Mazda, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Audi, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Koenigsegg, Pagani, Ford, GM, Dodge, RAM, Nissan / most automakers worldwide are actively manufacturing lithium ion battery electric vehicles based on LFP or NCA lithium batteries, AC variable frequencies motor controllers ad IPM or Induction motors, like the Amazing pancake RAXIAL electric motor from Koenigsegg or their similar flat high torque ultra energy efficient EV motors being developed by Toyota + Panasonic + NGK / mixing metals & ceramics & magnets & rare earths, polymer insulators, films & coatings, copper wires, with much tighter tolerances in the traction motors to get even better traction & performance & efficiency. Na-Ion or sodium ion batteries, especially the Sodium Aluminum battery, are poised to replace cobalt intensive lithium-ion battery chemistries.
With all of this EV traction, we can see the value of 10-30 min fast charging 100-300 kWh EV batteries with public chargers hooked up to MW scale commercial electrical grid power connections & substations. Fraunhofer GMBH even worked with Porsche to develop 800v 1000AMP DC Level 4 charging to enable a 10 min rapid charge session similar to a gasoline refueling session for a similar or typical traditional fossil fueled vehicle that accepts liquid hydrocarbon gasoline or diesel into tanks of 10-100 gallons capacity in 2-15 minute refueling sessions that happen millions of times per day in America at more than 2 million unleaded gasoline stations. The DC fast chargers are essential for EV long distance road trips at 60-90 MPH on American Highways & Freeways, where the local speed limit either 55 MPH or 60 MPH and increase to 70 MPH in rural locals & 80 MPH in the middle of America, and people often drive 5-10 mph over the limit, speeding :) It takes 3x more energy to go 70 MPH than it does to go 50 MPH in a typical average automobile, which is not very aerodynamic like most aircraft. 50 MPH the aerodynamic crossover point where it makes most sense to roll up the windows & turn on the dash AC or air conditioning for passenger cooling in hot summer weather or to defrost the windows in cold winter weather :)
So what happens when you plug in your EV to a LEVEL 3 fast charger & hear a loud boom or crack & see that the charging station stops working. Low on battery charge or with range anxiety, far away from home, I hope you brought along a portable generator with EV charging fake ground mod so you can use the EVSE charging cable to slow charge in a pinch by getting energy created in your portable Honda EU2000i or similar, from gasoline that you add to the generators tank. Otherwise, you are stuck, perhaps able to use the Plug Share app on your android or IOS smartphone to find a nearby working L2 or L3 DC charging station that you can access with the remaining charge on you depleted EV battery that needs charging urgently. This makes EV road-trip slower & less practical right now in early 2023 in America as the nation's public charging station infrastructure largely underdeveloped & vulnerable to cable theft & solar flare damage.
I had 2 different Nissan LEAF's but ended up going back to Prius since those were very early EV's with less than 120 miles of range per charge. America very unlike Europe, very spread out, so such range does not work for many people all the time. Great for short commuting trips, even low range electric vehicles, rideable E-bikes, electric scooters & similar are ok for getting around town. Its the freeway between cities & towns in Americ that requires much larger battery capacity, road trips & long commutes & commercial use of EV trucks & busses that operate all day moving people & cargo around, shipments for Prime subscribers etc who shop on Amazon.com
