Currently net energy positive nuclear fusion reactors are only operating in highly secretive government defense vehicle platforms because of strategic security and remains in pre-commercialization because of entrenchment in the carbon energy sector and its vast influence over capitalistic global economic function, trade, transportation, materials, precursors, base load generator, vehicle fuels, chemicals of all kinds, especially structural epoxy and advanced polymers. Even carbon fiber starts out as a petrochemical call PAN fiber that is then baked in electric ovens to produce carbon fibers. The lithium ion batteries the world over represent many advanced domain applications of advanced petrochemical derivative chemicals from the rich array offered by chemical engineering on crude oil products and their chemical children, our base modification series now numbering in the billions of compounds, for billions of people.

Even large oil companies are interested in unleashing more abundance for mankind, especially more energy & entropy to create magnificent improvements the world over across all sectors, most notably with the development and explosion of intelligence from the ongoing artificial intelligence revolution. Super human intelligence will pave the way to unleashing abundance into the world to the enrichment and elevation of all future people. Together we will unlock the power of fusion to power future generations in a cleaner, sustainable, abundant way that burning carbon could never match. 
The carbon is more interesting in lifeforms anyway! Burning fine wood furniture would be a sin, waste and tragedy but so is burning valuable petrochemical crude oil resources that can have far more value added in the engineered petrochemical downstream products, especially recyclable plastics, polymers and other eco-friendly petrochemical creations born out of the green chemistry revolution of biodynamic genomic chemical engineering with machine assistance computer aided engineering medicine & enhance AI generative science innovation that creates positive feedbacks in technological advancement. 
As a support of the trans humanism movement I believe we can each become wildly more intelligent, solve more problems using less of everything, going further with greater elegance. That we can achieve super efficiency in all domains while liberating people from drudgery with intelligent robots, all heavy tasks that would harm your body will be delighted to machines, not that anyone decries the automatic clothing washer, dish washer, or robotic traffic intersection light control lane capacity sensing computers with crude artificial intelligence. Autopilot in cars, trucks and other vehicle platforms will enable autonomous vehicle technology to flourish, continually improving, the outcomes will continue to improve. Recycling rates improve. Organic & biodynamic farming food culture improving. More people understanding health more completely, the internet and fitness tracking bracelets, democratized access to information about practically anything, we are already forging a stronger future together using advanced technology that makes it possible for more people to work lighter smarter instead of painful heavy harder. Consider the phasing away from Lead Acid batteries in power-sports vehicles to the use of super-ultra light Lithium Iron Phosphate LiFePO4 technology that is 5x lighter, longer lasting and eco-friendly.

I was a longtime fan of diesel vehicles because of their ability to run on biofuels with only minimal medications. The higher thermal efficiency of the diesel engine often gave diesel engine powered vehicles significantly better fuel economy than gas powered alternatives. Sadly the VW diesel gate fallout tanked the commercial value of diesel vehicles, at least in the passenger vehicle segment that most interests me as a car culture crazy American scientist interested in sustainable clean energy technology development, progress, science, research, engineering and innovation. There is always a more excellent way in every domain of life, especially with energy :)

Electric vehicles offer the best way forward because the higher vehicle electrical power levels enable autonomous driver functionality to become integrated in more passenger vehicles, improving safety and efficiency in terms of miles per kWh etc vastly in excess of that able to be achieved by human drivers. The self driving cars continue to learn as a fleet in an ongoing continuous compounding way such that within just the next 12 years, many autopilot vehicles will have super human driving performance. Nuclear energy, especially fusion, able to provide abundant electricity to charge battery electric and wireless power vehicles. Inductive charging at greater distances paving the way towards inroad wireless charging capabilities, and inductive mat's in parking spaces for easier automatic charging!
