Network Assisted Vision & Learning

A computerized energy system on wheels, modern cars provide the perfect platform for a rolling 5G data center. The mass of a vehicle permit the integration of many sensors & systems needed to provide machine vision functionality that greatly exceeds performance limits of biological binocular forward sight with mirror & window assist that human pilots use to drive. Self driving cars can see using lidar, radar, sonar + machine vision across many other spectral ranges. They can see further, through fog * rain, in 360 deg for hundreds of feet in all directions, while also leveraging Google Street View imagery, GPS + Glonass + Baidoo & other positioning systems, inertial movement tracking & connected telemetry ; all simultaneously.

Shared learning & fleet level continuous optimization means that when a self driving vehicle makes a mistake, it will upload the mistake to the networks so that all other self driving cars are unable to make the same mistake. Over long periods of time the accumulated learning by self driving network cars will eclipse the general driving intelligence skill of any human driver.

"Smartphone" Sensor Enhanced 

Self driving cars will benefit substantially from sensors originally designed and mass manufactured for smartphones, namely HD & UHD compact wide dynamic range imaging sensors with sunlight crisp imaging & very good low light performance. These small & increasingly exceptional phone cameras can shoot 4K video at 120FPS when paired with an appropriate powerful image data capturing & processing compute platform.

Intelligent Forgetting 

Like humans, self driving cars will not need to save all the data they collect from their sensors: server assisted machine learning can extract only the most valuable data from that which the sensors collect. The real magic will come when the self driving cars have super human intelligence to actively only collect the best data while "automatically forgetting" useless information.

Many cars today ship with electronic driver safety assist technologies like lane keep assist, automatic cruise control, automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, vehicle stability control, etc. Much of the sizzle that sells new vehicle models originate from increasing information technology integration.

A computerized battery on wheels, newer vehicles already have around 100 onboard embedded computers hosted on an OBDII network. Larger AGM batteries are becoming more common to accommodate these electrical loads. More computers in more parts of the vehicle, the Car became a gadget when Tesla released the Model S! The Tesla Model S has more in common with your smartphone & a brushless drill driver than it does with a traditional car!

Sister Taken by a Bad Driver 

Young Erica Lynn Schwarz's life was cut tragically short after only 3 years when she was killed making a snow Angel in the front yard of our family home on a cold winters day long ago. A car with balding tires driven by an unfit teenage driver up the hill in front of our home lost control, sliding backwards, it skipped the curb entering the yard and struck Erica's head. She survived briefly on life support. The deep emotional affect the memories have fuel my disdain and frustration with idiot drivers & the DOL who awards unfit drivers a license to hurt others with their low skill stupidity!

Custom built electric drag cars can do sub 9 second quarter mile runs that completely embarrass drivers of fossil ice setups. One Masda Miata fitted with two forklift motors & lithium ion batteries was able to smoke a Tesla Model S P85D at the drag strip.

Electric delivery vehicles that start & stop a lot like a mail truck doing last mile deliveries (UPS, USPS, FEDEX etc) the people that bring Amazon packages to your front door or mail to your mail box! Electric trucks are now becoming a real world phenomenon as cummings the diesel truck engine magnate lunches its electric semi-truck of 44,000 lbs cargo capacity.

Electric motors are the final drive on hybrid electric trains because the electric motor can make massive amounts of traction power, to pull & pull, while being very efficient at converting incoming electrical energy into rotational power to move stuff! 

Why Electric with Self Driving 

Rolling data center self-driving cars are going to have massively powerful electrical systems to power all the computational heavy lifting of early artificial intelligence platforms with super human driving capabilities + networking for V2V & V2G. The huge energy storage batteries in electric cars can power the electric bus of such systems far more effectively that a larger alternator in a convention gasoline ICE vehicle.
