MT03 Gearing Thoughts

1st and 2nd gears are short for fast launched from a stop to get you up to speed quickly, while you will find that 3rd great on very steep hills at neighborhood speeds, its magical 4th gear that sings this bikes song as you flog it enthusiastically keeping your momentum. 5th and 6th gear are highway freeway long gear or idle for earlier upshifting if your maximizing fuel economy using the real time fuel consumption data from the dash.

MT03 Fuel Economy

EPA rated at 56 miles per gallon, it's possible to get up to 83 MPG using every fuel saving riding trick possible. Gentle riding can net 64 MPG on even hilly routes. If you ride it like your road racing fuel consumption increases to 42 MPG. Spirited riding gets 53 MPG, while you can easily get 58 MPG keeping up with free flowing traffic. The fuel tank 3.1 gallons means its probably wise to stop an fill up every 120 miles to give you enough reserve or spare fuel to make it to another gas station if the one you stopped at not working or unavailable or power off, or some other problem like the fueling terminal payment computer is not working.

I always like to keep the fuel topped off so the maximum range available and try to fill-up when the fuel tank half full or so. Our PCX150 scooter gets 83-103 MPG depending on 2up or 1up riding and speeds and routes, but only holds 1.1 gallons, so we top that one up every 60 to 70 miles of riding. Thankfully there are lots of fueling stations in America, around 3 million gas stations as of 2024. I use the Pure Gas app on my smartphone to locate Ethanol Free gasoline, which is The Grange in Issaquah nearby where pumps 1 through 4 serve E0 or pure gasoline or gas without ethanol added. Typical gasoline sold at gas stations in America is unleaded E10 and contains up to 10% corn ethanol, since ethanol replaced MTBE as the fuel oxygenator additive to make the gasoline cleaner burning in engines designed to work with up to 15% fuel ethanol content in unleaded regular, plus or premium gasoline.|

Considering Buying an 2020-2024 MT-03

Start by watching this Youtube review https://youtu.be/iRvJM2Qo-LI?si=nMDvmyd1s0wR4qcp

1. Comfortable seating geometry, low seat height, ergonomic 3-gallon gasoline tank, with 150-200 miles of range per fill-up. More like 130 miles on 2 gallons, which is like $10 in California lol

2. Good fuel economy between 53-83 MPG on regular unleaded gasoline, giving decent range.

3. Agile flickable handling, compact, nimble, only 373lbs wet, the best of a smaller bike, but big too

4. Low emissions via fuel injection, ECU + O2 sensor + catalytic converter.

5, The l8lb SS exhaust system also sounds fantastic, with enough noise to be loud and clear as a tachometer audio source without being annoying on long trips. Wear earplugs to block hearing damaging wind noise, a full-face helmet also suppresses wind noise that otherwise destroying ear hairs and hearing sensitivity.

6. Low purchase price of $4599 new, or about $6K out the door ready to ride, register, licensed /

7. Many accessories available for tail delete, add a windscreen to reduce wind buffeting, tank bags or crash bars or many other ways to mount gear or goods for longer road trips.

8. Smaller compact size makes parking in tight spaces and lane splitting to cheat stop & go easier.

9. Cool styling, blackout look, projector LED headlamp bright crisp & well aimed, the best entry level hyper naked sport bike available.

10. Dope engine 320.3cc offset twin 8 valve, liquid cooled, fuel injected, emissions controlled, a derivative of the R3 engine refined over 9 years of real-world use & testing.

Extension & Commentary

Comfortable ergonomic riding triangle seating position with sculpted gas tank allowing nearly 6 foot tall riders like me to fit perfectly, while my lovely barely 5 foot 3 inch wife Megan able to plant both feet on the ground, with low 30.7 inch seat height ideal for even short riders with both feet fully planted on the ground during stopping, making it an ideal starter bike, while the R3 refined for 9 years eight valve engine features forged rods and forged pistons, making over 40 HP and over 20 lb-ft of torque, happily singing along at up to 85 MPG at 8,000+ RPM, all the way up to 10,000 RPM, and redlines at 12,500 with a top speed of 112 MPH, doing 0-60 MPG in 5.3 seconds acceleration that toasts most cars, trucks and SUVs, while the compact size slips between stopped cars in stop and go traffic with superlative lane splitting time saving that cuts me car commute home from work of over an hour to under 20 minutes on the MTO3 lane splitting traffic congestion stop & go.

This 2020 MTO3 gets me home 40 minutes earlier by enabling lane splitting (legal or not), saving hundreds of finite hours not stuck in my car on the way home. Holy amazing (Thank you God) this more than pays for the $6000 out the door brand new in 2020 that I paid at I90 Motorsports, Issaquah, Washington State, USA for this transportation toy that I recently rode on an 880 mile road trip to Roseberg, Oregon & back, plus riding in rural USA rides while I was there (dreamlike, with Meg on the back riding 2 up at highway speeds)

The low emissions exhaust system made of blacked out stainless steel and only 18.5lbs, while the O2 sensor & catalytic converter emissions controls still result in a beautiful exhaust note (thank you Yamaha Motors)(they make musical instruments too, evident in the beautiful, loud enough tasteful exhaust note)(holy crap its superlative without being too loud) this is a urban city rocket 320.3cc offset parallel twin liquid cooled fuel injected beautiful tasty motorcycle that gives me whole body pleasure shivers when I ride it and focus on shifting the 6 speed sequential one down and five up transmission, using the B&W easy to read dash to keep track of which gear, time of day, instant fuel economy and fuel economy average, the RPM's of the engine to shift match with speed displayed with the tac, even the exhaust like an audio tachometer, just enough exhaust note to heat through ear plugs and a fully face helmet.

I rode this MTO3 more than 360 miles one way to our cousin's home in Roseberg Oregon, stopping twice for fuel, only 2 gallons each time. While in Roseberg I went on a mini road trip up highway 8 for 2 hours, while Meg and I rode 2 up to a local rock quarry and got off in the 100 F warm evening weather in the shade to taking imaging with our phones of the bike, each other and the rock mine.

It was a beautiful priceless set of experiences of 880 miles total, that ended with a fresh synthetic 10W40 oil & OEM filer change afterward, that was fast, easy, clean, they put the oil filter and drain bolt such that the old used motor oil drained from the filter and oil pan fall so close together that is easy to capture in a container for used motor oil recycling, eco-friendly oil changing.

Only takes 2.2 quarts, or 2050ml of oil. This attention to detail in the design for the oil change procedure shows me that Yamaha really polished their entry level bike with an exceptional execution to help people acknowledge that the MT10 a worthwhile upgrade. The NC750X from Honda has my attention as the next motorcycle however, unless Yamama Motorsports can make something as worthy, dope or sic. '

I did a tail delete kit from Amazon to clean up the rear of the MTO3, adding also a small windscreen to reduce wind loading when riding faster. I wear a leather riding jacket and leather pant covers over my jeans when riding longer road trips.

The MTO3 smaller and lighter at 373lb wet, so it gets pushed around by heavy wind gusts and the shorter wheelbase bobbles a bit on rougher roads at higher speeds. MTO3 excels in urban or suburban traffic congestion where its compact user-friendly design make lane splitting much easier than on a larger bike. Easier to park and store in compact spaces, the MTO3 makes it possible to park behind a car in a small garage, to keep it dry during poopy winter cold rainy weather.

I wear a full face helmet, the Scorpion EXO420, aero optimized large, in white graphics themed about the Republic of Texas 1836, white with black graphics of knives and guns and Texas ideas. Texas the oil producing state of America, and while I previous said bad things about Texas, I have become more conservative, and like Texas, and America, and am patriotic and love God, my wife, my country and other people, but especially love our 2020 MT03.

I came from a 2009 Suzuki GSX-R600, named "Buzz" and miss him, but love the MTO3 so much that it holds a special place in my heart. Its name is Kenneth, after my late adoptive father. Thats Kenneth the 2020 MTO3 blacked out stealth dope naked and spirited with just enough power but also great fuel economy and good rider comfort and low emissions. MTO3 the best of value and performance, in a nimble, smaller bike that is fun like our previous 2019 Honda Grom SF but much better at highway speeds in America.

Rides nice in city or highway speed traffic, while small enough to effectively lane split safely

Gets great fuel economy of 53 to 85 depending on riding speed and shifting patterns and throttle use.

Comfortable riding triangle makes a easy commuter bike in urban and suburban use cases.

Highway cruising fine at 50 to 85 mph in 6th gear, while you can hit the top speed of 112 in 4th gear, the fun gear, 4th enables broad speed RPM acceleration from 25 to 85 MPH.

Excellent fuel economy rivaling hybrid cars, of more than 50 MPG, even when ridden fast, though conservative fuel saving early upshifting hypermiling can net 80 MPG on MT03 using regular unleaded gasoline E10 widely available at millions of common gas stations in America. I buy ethanol free from The Grange, Issaquah, Washington, USA locally when commuting.

I add fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank fuel when storing the MTO3 during winter. I also added a charge cable adapter to the battery, easy to access near the rear brake cylinder, tucked into the frame, easy to connect, so it is easier to float charge the AGM 12v SLA battery when the MTO3 in storage during winter for extended periods without being operated.

Not the smallest, fastest, or most powerful, cheapest or most expensive, but is the best of all or jack of all trades, like me. I am savant polymath, and thats why I write and share this information, so you know why I love the Yamaha MTO3 and might consider buying one as your first motorcycle or as a reliable commuter if your more experienced like me with 24 years of street riding experience. I am also a CDL holding commercial driver who drives a School Bus professionally
