Quantum Computer Modeling Real Physical Systems Better than Digital Compute

IBM research senior vice president Dario Gil said that this is first time their 127-qubit Eagle Quantum Processor was able to model spin dynamics of a material to predict how it responds to magnetic fields.

This is significant because it has practical applications in electric axial flux motors for emerging EV's, in tape drives used for bulk cheap big data storage & even server class hard drives used in web servers & cloud computing. 


Enhanced understanding of magnetic spin of materials can be used to increase the data storage capacity of hard drives which still have lower costs per unit of data storage than solid state drives in enterprise data storage applications in servers & cloud environments for frequently accessed data, while tape drives on cellulose acrylate films coated in magnetic nanoparticles have the lowest cost per unit of data storage for infrequently accessed data.

Both spin hard disk technology & tape drive technology can be enhanced with quantum modeling of magnetic spin in real materials. Higher data density with better understanding. 

Inside a spinning hard drive several aluminum disks coated in a thin slurry of dried on iron nanoparticles spins at 5400 rpm in slower drives, 7200 rpm in faster drivers, 10,000 rpm in faster drives & 15,000 rpm in server speed helium purged drives. 

Above & below each disk a tiny electromagnet floating just a few molecules above the surface of the disk uses the flow of current in the magnetic field to modulate the spin of iron molecules on the disc coating by changing the magnetic dipole moment to store 1 or 0 as digital bits, very quickly and with high precision and high accuracy and error correction methods to minimize glitches or data loss as the discs spinning super-fast & the liner motor controls the ultra-low mass read write head movement with amazing speed & accuracy. These mems based magnetic read-write heads were the subject of intense corporate secrecy at Western Digital & Seagate to keep dishonest copy-cat companies in China from cloning their products. 

Improving axil flux coupling between the magnets & electric wire coils in Axial motors will enable even higher electrical efficiency, enabling more power in smaller motors with lower mass. Less mass means lower cost Axial motors and lower cost mounting & lower overall vehicle manufacturing costs meaning the use of smaller EV batteries can provide more range, while the lower overall mass of such optimized EV's will enhance tire life & energy economy, while also improving acceleration & handling. Radial flux traditional EV motors are heavier, less efficiency & more costly. Modeling the spin of the magnet materials in new rare-earth free magnets made of nickel, iron, copper & boron, sintered oxides thereof or room temperature superconductors, etc. Quantum material spin modeling can improve EV motor magnets. 

This also means we are entering the quantum computing commercialization era with Intel launching Tunnel Falls Qubit Processors. IBM Eagle Qubit Processors too :) This is significant because quantum computer can solve complex problems that have too much data to be solved on classical digital computer systems.

Quantum compute can improve noise reduction, signal filtering, digital to analog & analog to digital, imaging sensors, FPGA's, crypto mining, GPU, CPU chips, optical computing & silicon photonics, there are many emerging technologies like CFD used to reduce aerodynamic drag in blended wing aircraft or in automobiles body designs to enable longer range EV's or better fuel economy & lower emissions.

Many big data problems that are hard or expensive or time consuming to solve on digital super computers can be solved with less energy, cheaper & faster on near term emerging Qubit computers. Error correction in the Qubit processor essential to enabling room temperature Q-bit processors. In classical quantum computing the quantum bits are held at cryogenic temperatures to reduce noise so the signals can be accurately measured.

Newer computational approaches to signal noise reduction & signal error correction using AI enhanced noise reduction tools for example will enable room temperature Q-bit processors to be applied to warm data center applications. The NSA has proprietary signal noise reduction & signal correction tools that can help to commercialized quantum computing.
