NACS vs CCS vs J1772 vs CHAdeMO

Ford & GM EV's with Tesla NACS charging port / abandoning CCS, J1772 & CHAdeMO

NACS seems like the USB of EV charging, likely to win out as the DeFacto standard connector for public fast charging & even home EV chargers. 
Level 2 Chargers At Home or on the Go Most Common with J1772 cables & ports :) 

J1772 L2 or Level 2 connector and cable the most common, with more than 50,000 public L2 chargers and millions of private home L2 chargers wired into two 30- or 40-amp breakers on a 200amp utility panel, usually with 8-3 cable inside a conduit protector tube directly to the L2 charger or to a NEMA 14-30 or NEMA 14-50 outlet for a charge cable adapter use. 

Many homes already have a 240v dryer or welder or oven outlet that can serve up L2 power for 6-30 mi per hour of charging rate.

EVSE Extension Cord L1 Charging Cabled Included via NEMA 5-15 120vac @1600watts 

A regular power outlet can serve up to 1600 watts for L1 charging at 2-5mi of added range per hour of charging while the EV parked 22 hours per day, since most EV are driven less than 2 hours per day.

Every EV sold includes an extension cord charger or L1 EVSE charging cable, usually in a nylon bag in the trunk area. I regularly charge my 2019 Nissan LEAF SV 40kWh battery using the included EVSE extension cord charger plugged into the outdoor deck power outlet of our ground floor apartment, with the cord strewn over the handrail of the deck to the parking space nearby where my LEAF is parked for many hours per day. 

L3 DC Fast Charging Stations

L3 charging can serve up 10-350kw of charging rate, and I sometimes do that at the local Nissan Dealer on their ABB charger that has both CHAdeMO & CCS cable connectors. I charge for 10-20 minutes at a time, very early in the morning when its coldest outside, after the LEAF cooled off all night to its lowest daily temp, so the battery not warm or hot. 

The air-cooled battery pack of the Nissan LEAF easily damaged by fast charging or high heat and there is an entire LEAF Battery Fade WIKI about this. I never L3 charge above 83% and try to limit charging at L3 for less than 15 min to prevent the battery pack from heating up. The charger also throttles charging to less than 22 kW since I am usually just boosting from 60% to 80%. 

10 min L4 DC Fastest Charging Stations

Emergent L4 charging through a spring-loaded tension wire assisted cable easy lifter and very thick charging cable can serve 800kw to 1 megawatt of charging rate for a 10 min super-charge :) This important for class 8 electric trucks with 500kWh of battery capacity or more, or electric busses with large capacity batteries. 

Some emerging costly luxury performance EV's that are upcoming are equipped with the 800VDC at 1000AMPS peak L4 charging port & a battery liquid cooled or intrinsically heat resistant chemistry to soak up power fast like that. Think Porsche 800mi per charge EV's in 2024-25 with solid-state batteries / also called Solid Polymer Li-Ion :) 

Carry EV charging adapters if you have an older EV 

Our 19 Nissan LEAF SV 40kWh has a J1772 power input port with up to 6.6kw of onboard power charger via the 240vac input on a L2 charger. It also has the CHAdeMO connector for L3 fast charging at 10-55KW depending on the battery temperature & state of charge.

To attach to CCS or NACS, I have to carry a CHAdeMO to CCS and CHAdeMO to NACS power cable adapter to plug into the CHAdeMO fast DC port so that it can take a CCS or NACS cable from a public L3 charging station. 

NACS cable connector adapter to J1772 or CCS port the most valuable for most EV' to carry in a bag in the trunk or similar.
