Each consists of a fused quartz or other heat resistant glass arc tube, with a tungsten metal electrode at each end. The glass tube is first evacuated and then re-filled with xenon gas.
The inherently unstable arc of a short arc Xenon bulb means the power supply has to pulse start the arc at 20-50kv, then switch to 18-35 volts at 10-3000 amps, depending on wattage, they are low voltage high amperage, but the power supply has to be able to monitor the arc electrically to adjust it in real time to prevent any of many possible failure modes, in order to get to 500-1000 hours of operating life.
