Honda EU2000i Teardown Repair Study Example

I recursively study this video to code the instructions into my brain by protein synthesis as encouraging enabling Can Do Attitude knowledge generalization procedural map concepts related to other engine ideas & knowledge accumulated during my life :) I love engines, motors, technology, science, innovation, physics, chemistry, fuels, gasoline, propane, butane, electricity, PV, Wind Power, energy & more or anything energetic, especially mobile energy system like the turbine APU featured on many passenger aircraft like the Boeing 737 or 767. Honda makes the most reliable & highest quality portable generators like the EU2200i which replaced this older model.

Meg & I selected in EU2000i in 2018 as a home backup generator, for $899 at Home Depot. Consider the manufactures features to understand why :

  • Great portability for recreation, camping and home backup power ~50 lbs with OEM box etc
  • Eco-throttle system provides excellent fuel efficiency by allowing the engine to run only as fast as needed for any given load, engine slows down & power output matches loads
  • Inverter technology provides clean, stable power for safely running sensitive electronics with less than 3% THD noise in the AC output, it also has 8 amps of DC output via a car battery charging cable kit that I keep with ours in the box.
  • Quality Honda 98cc OHC engine provides reliability, as long as you regularly change the oil, keep fresh gasoline running through the unit, store it clean & dry inside when not in use, and do not operate at full output for long periods which can cook it.
  • Two 20 Amp, 120V outlets, though its only 1600 watts continually max.
  • Electronic ignition and automatic decompression for easy starts, & pull starter to start it!
  • Oil Alert™ shuts down engine when oil level drops too low, which should never happen if you are maintaining it correctly.
  • Super-quiet 53-59dB operation is quieter than normal conversation, and very quiet compared to other analogous generators of the same size, mass or power output.
  • 2000 surge watts, 1,600 rated watts, 120 Volts
  • Runs 3.44 to 8.1 hours on single tank of 1 gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, I use E0 or ethanol free gasoline from The Grange in Issaquah, Wa, distributed by CENEX. Use the Pure Gas app on iOS or Android to find ethanol free gasoline for sale near you!
  • Twin 20 Amp, 120V outlets, consider adding high quality 12/3 extension cables & adapters to increase the number of outlet plugs at the end of the cable to hook up loads.
  • Equipped with circuit breakers that can be user reset, USDA-qualified spark arrestor muffler with mesh capture & acoustically tuned exhaust, and automatic voltage regulators on the inverter that takes AC from the IPM generator motor attached to the crankshaft of the 98cc OHV engine.
  • CARB compliant; can be sold in California, as it has permeative emissions controls to reduce crank case vapor & HC emissions, to introduce more air to the the intake, to prevent fuel vapors from leaking, to turn the gasoline line off when you turn the engine off & many other innovative feature not present on much cheaper alternatives.

I keep our Honda EU2000i topped off with stabilized ethanol free gasoline, and perform 15 min run cycles every 30-90 days to keep the gasoline fuel moving, to keep the carb & fuel lines full of fresh fuel.

I take the spark plug out, add a few drops of engine fogger oil to he cylinder wall, shut it down, cool it off while writing notes in its maintenance journal to log everything.

I change the oil based on calendar, not runtime, keeping fresh synthetic oil in the crank case all the time. I store it once cooled in a large plastic bag, inside the OEM box, with a full printed teardown guide, some tools, a spare spark plug, and even a special EV L1 adapter plug made with resisters to fake out the GFCI into accepting the floating neutral AC output, so that our Lectric XP 3.0 E-bike can be charged, so that we can charge other backup battery systems & devices during power outages, run the microwave oven, boil water, operate lights or lamps, or have some limited 1.6kw of AC 120v 60hz for a few hours as an emergency backup.

I store the generator in the OEM box, with the generator covered with the OEM cover, also inside a large plastic bag, in a dry indoor location to keep the entire unit dry. I also load the unit into the thick plastic bag in the OEM box while it's still warm to drive off any moisture.

So you might wonder, why do I go though such efforts, it keeps it in perfect working order & to continually test it to make sure it works, to keep fresh fuel in & log the efforts & operating time like the odometer on a car.

I even put a vibration activated operating timer on the case that logs hours of on time, to add another channel of data to my notes, along with what was done, the loads applied to the generator while its on, the maintenance or inspection performed, date, parts used, time of day done, & other facts.

I keep a pen with the notebook with the generator in a thick plastic bag with other OEM notes & books that came with the generator, in the box at the top of the OEM box above the generator & store a 5 gallon gasoline can with the generator with continually refreshed stabilized gasoline so that I can refill the 1 gallon tank about 5 times, to get 20 hours of power output before running out of fuel.

I divert fuel from the gas can into our cars to keep the fuel moving, so no stale fuel forms. I add fuel stabilizer to any gas can, motor scooter, motorcycle, pressure washer, lawn mower, or any other small engine air cooled & carbureted gasoline fuel engines or small fuel tanks, since fuel stabilizer extends gasolines shelf life from 3 months to 2 years.

The stabilizer in the gasoline prevent oxidation from making waxy strings in the gasoline which is what happens when regular E10 unleaded gasoline sours or starts to oxidize. By keeping the generator tank topped off with fresh ethanol free stabilized gas it further minimizes the air gap at the top of the tank, reducing oxidation further.
