Also known as Vaseline Glass or Depression Glass, this cup from the 1930's & was made in America. I purchased it on Ebay.com!  

Here (image above) we are using a 51 LED 365nm UV Flashlight ($10 *amazon.com)powered by 3 LR6 or AA alkaline batteries to bombard the cup ($6 Ebay.com) with UV light such that it energizes uranium ions into fluorescent emitting a vivid yellow green neon glow color by effectively converting the 365nm light into emissions of 490-532nm light, or liquid neon lime green color, my favorite color.

The outer orbital shell electrons around the uranium 238 atoms energized by the UV light & are thus excited to a higher energy state that upon relaxing spontaneously emits a photon in the green color :) This kind of glass contains between 1/2 & 25% uranium oxide, added to the dry powder glass mix before melting in a glass furnace / forge & then moulded into this cup shape in this example! 

During WWII & the Cold War that followed from ~1950-1990, uranium was restricted as a national security resource, making it hard for citizens to get any for any private, commercial or industrial use. Significantly, depleted uranium was used as a counterweight on many Boeing 747's before 1981, when the crash of one resulted in release of this mildly radioactive metal mass as fragments in the environment. Some military projectiles are made of depleted uranium for its extreme density & ballistic & impact performance properties as a gun or cannon bullet. 

Tungsten carbide penetrators are cheaper & less dangerous & largely replaced DU rounds, though not in all applications. Some tank cannon ammo still contains depleted uranium bullets of large caliber sizes. These DU rounds are both heavy & expensive, but have unmatched performance as a simple kinetic projectile. 

Uranium decays very slowly over millions of years, so my GQ GMC-300E Geiger Muller Counter Data Logger can measure on a tiny increase to 20 or 22 CP vs a typical background radiation level of 14-17 CPM. My Americium button when its aperture pointed at the tube in this unit measure many hundreds of CPM. With two Am241 buttons we are able to get the unit to register a high of 415 CPM

In the near future, we are going to go uranium / thorium hunting for fun using this as a our meter & some simple tools to extract some radiative ore & transport it in a lead lined aluminum box (gamma, beta shielding container) so that neither Meg or I are harmed & so the radiation does not damage any of the electronics or control modules in our Toyota Prius. Some naturally occurring radioactive minerals registers many thousands of CPM, primarily because of Radium content that decays into Radon gas & then Polonium & eventually Lead, as microfine dust thats toxic. The cup was purchased on Ebay where the seller applied a "Solo" sticker to the inside. Meg thought this was funny & suggested adding the word "Hans" in the video, as a tribute to the Star Wars character Hans Solo :P
