Adding 0W-20 Full Synthetic Engine Oil :)
After removing oil oil from our 2010 Toyota Prius
DIY changing the engine oil 3.5 L (2dexos, KIRKLAND from Costco / 0W-20 full synthetic & filter assembly + o-ring (WIX 57064) & applying a new copper crush washer (Doorman 097-829CD) to the oil drain bolt plug & then using a torque wrench to precision tighten the drain bolt to 24 ft-lbs. I jack up the Prius using a hydraulic floor jack & then put jack stands on each side to secure the vehicle for safe working conditions such that if the jack fails, the car will not crush me (only 4.9 inch ground clearance) under the PRIUS normally, which could cause a painful, disabling or disfiguring or even possibly deadly accident.
Removing the oil filter housing an annoying waste of time VW style design that Toyota should be ashamed of! It probably takes an additional 20 minutes of fiddling around to actually change.
Even after using the special oil filter housing adapter with an brushless electric impact wrench (image above) to break free the plastic housing from its aluminum mount, I then have to apply a huge amount of torque with a 24 inch breaker bar to force spin it off.
Its a mess to deal with too, forcing the consumption of additional paper towels. I do not think this is eco-friendly the way Toyota may have intended, vs the smaller easier to change metal spin on off type oil filter cartridge used on our 2005 Toyota Prius that can be recycled with the engine oil at the auto-parts store.
A common problem people encounter with paying someone else to change their vehicles engine oil, too much oil added. Check by taking out the engine oil dipstick, then wiping it down to remove any oil. Re-install the dipstick, then remove the dipstick slowly & carefully. Near the tip of the dipstick there are level indicators, the oil level should be somewhere about halfway between full & low, you can see this by tilting the dipstick back & forth to look for the oil sheen vs the bare steel.
Adding too much engine oil can cause real problems by breaking down the oil pan gasket or forcing engine oil past the piston rings into the combustion & making nasty exhaust smoke that's toxic to human lungs with lots of small particulate matter or PM particles that get lodged deep into the gas exchange membranes of human lung Alveoli, which are tiny air sacs in your lungs that take up the oxygen you breathe in and keep your body going. Although they're microscopic, alveoli are the workhorses of your respiratory system.
You have about 480 million alveoli, located at the end of bronchial tubes. PM sticks to the lining cells of alveoli, where it causes carcinogenic & mutagenic damage while also blocking gas exchange like COPD & can be a causal factor in risks for the development of COPD, lung cancer & emphysema & other respiratory problems. Engine exhaust gases, like CO, fuel vapor or HC & PM are also neurotoxic to human brain cells & all that CO2 emitted from the combustion makes climate change worse & that CO2 also makes acid rain that toxifies lakes & rivers & streams & ocean by making the natural bodies of water acidic. The acid rain from combustion emissions also causes corrosion of infrastructure that costs hundreds of billions in preventable decay. Keeping clean oil in the engine makes the engine last longer & operate properly, which helps to reduce tailpipe emissions.
Recycling engine oil also eco-friendly. Doing something yourself or DIY also has an enabling uplifting effect on your moral & sense of accomplishment & making it happen, good for your emotional & psychological health.
I have a spiritual attachment & experience when working on my vehicles DIY. I pray to God while preparing the procedure & while doing the work alone, quietly, with a still mind of peace & tranquilly "doing it while I still can & enjoy it" they way God enables me to. I give thanks & praise to God before, during & after such a procedure.
Saved the old engine oil to take to the local auto-parts store (Autozone) to recycle to be ecologically responsible since used motor oil a dirty toxic mixture of engine combustion substances, acids, metals & other stuff that the recycler can clean out of the oil, such that the base oil & other additives can be reworked into new lubricating oils & synthetic diesel fuel.
This related to the right to repair law for automobiles & car manufacturers designing vehicles to be harder for normal people to perform basic maintenance on. The spark plugs in the 05 Prius can be change in 30 min flat easily, while this 2010 Prius takes 2+ hours to do the same procedure because of how much stuff has to be removed in order to gain access to remove the oil spark plugs & install new ones & torque them down to the correct specification. I only use iridium tipped long life spark plugs for this reason, to save time, since everyone running out of time & time is money.
This procedure not even financially viable in terms of cost benefit, but I get a special thrill or kick or joy out of doing work on my vehicles by my self, in part, so that I know it was done correctly.
