Lithium EV Batteries & BEV Market

Typical lithium cobalt carbon batteries were invented & commercialized by SONY in 1990 for the Walkman & Digital Cameras at production cost equivalent of $3700 per kWh at that time, having declined in the Tesla 4680 tab-less battery to $57 per kWh respectively in NMC chemistry.

Early Li-Ion were encased in a stainless steel housing & laser welded closed within an inert argon environment to prevent moisture from reacting with the lithium or cobalt used in the cathode while high purity graphite or hard carbon used in the anode material. Petrochemical electrolytes & an ion permeable membrane separator film between the anode & cathode enabled Li+ ions to shuttle between the anode & cathode during charge & discharge respectively. During the initial formatting charge a SEI layer formed that consumes some of the lithium while making the protective layer that prevent dendritic shorting from forming during later battery cycling & aging.

Li-PO or Lithium Polymer batteries replaced the heavy dense stainless steel case with aluminized mylar wrapped around the rectangular packet cells typically of hobby RC toys & in other portable electronics like laptops, tablets, smartphones & smartwatches respectively. This increased energy density to above 260wh/kg respectively, while the theoretical peak energy density of feasible lithium ion chemistries goes to 600wh/kg with 4th generation lithium sulfur batteries just now achieving commercialization in medium volumes for specialized aerospace drones where the highest energy density battery energy storage value exceeds the premium paid for lower volume production packs of high cost per unit, by contrast to mass manufactured common lithium cobalt chemistries found in high volume global production electronics like iPhone or Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

Cobalt the toxic conflict mineral mined by forced labor & children in fail states in Africa that many EV makers like Tesla sought to replace in newer chemistries that use more aluminum, nickel, manganese & even silicon in the anode instead of carbon for faster charging. At Toyota solid-state lithium ion batteries are being produced for pre-production beta testing EV's for the 2025-onward MY vehicle offerings of Toyota BEV' or battery electric vehicles, noting Toyota's early avoidance of EV's for the pursuit of hybrid electric vehicles based on NiMH or nickel metal hydride battery made in conjunction with Panasonic the battery supplier. These NiMH Prius batteries have better cold weather performance than typical Li-ion batteries below 40F or 10 C, in very cold winter weather like that encounter in parking lots of ski resorts as people go skiing or snowboarding all day, having driving their hybrid electric Toyota up the mountain pass to the ski resort with diesel & diesel electric chair-lift cable chair systems to move skiers & snowboarders up the mountain so they can carve the powder or groomed snow on the way back down in a silent symphony of kinetic ecstasy often with music in the ears under the head beanie to add some audio texture to the experiences of sheer joy :) I have been snowboarding since 1995 & absolutely love it!

Even living in Issaquah, my 19 Nissan LEAF cannot make it up the pass the Summit at Snoqualmie because climbing the pass at 70 MPH with the heat going full blast would juice the pack before I got there. I got the LEAF for local commuting to & from work. That's by far the closest ski-resort to our current address. Meg's 10 Prius III way better for longer energy intensive highway trips like that.

Back to the topic of EV's

Yes, replacing the battery packs in an older EV with a faded battery can cost between $5-20K, but there is also no engine or transmission. Consider the electric motors in most EV's super durable for 1 million miles of operation or 40+ years before the magnets lose a lot of their magnetic flux density from high heat levels respectively or heat cycling. There are examples of 2011 Nissan LEAF with over 300,000 miles ODO where the only major repair cost was a replacement 24kWh battery pack.

EV's like the Nissan LEAF have their best energy economy at lower speeds, achieving peak miles per kWh in the 8 mi/kWh at around 16 mph. As aerodynamic penalties start to add up at higher speeds the energy economy drops to 3.1 mi/kWh at common highway & freeway speeds of 55-80 mph. Sorry only American Imperial units in this one. I am writing about EV batteries for other English speaking people to consider, since people in America often have enough vehicle budget to buy a newer used Nissan LEAF or Tesla model something respectively.

The OG LEAF went through two major revision, resulting in a 30kWh variant in 2015 & stylistic upgrades & heat pump based more efficient HVAC systems being first commercialized in automotive formats in these later editions. In 2018 the 3rd generation was launched, called the 2nd Gen or ZE1, its actually a 3rd revision of the EM57+ motor drive system & 40kWh battery pack chemistry that's more fade resistant & with longer calendar life & cycle life vs the previous versions. A 62kWh & then 60kWh pack were made available on the SL+ variants. 2018-2023 model year Nissan LEAF are scheduled for a technical improvement upgrade to the battery & motor for the 2025 model year, probably with liquid cooling like that present on the Nissan ARIYA, which comes with up to 82 kWh of battery good for over 300 miles of range per charge for just over $60K new.

Most privately owned automobiles are parked 90% of the time for 21 hours per day. Many people get home before 8pm & do not leave for work until after 5am the next day. That's 9 hours parked, where even extension cord EVSE level 1 charging can add 2-5 miles of range per hour, depending on driving style. A lead foot driver in a Nissan LEAF going full blast on the highway driving like they stole it can achieve 2 mi/ kWh while a typical driver on the same route can easily get 3.5 mi/kWh, and with light hypermiling slower speeds & inertial conservation techniques its possible to get 5.1-7.1 mi/kWh especially in flatter topography environments with warmer but not hot weather.

If you are going to L3 44kW Fast DC charge a Nissan LEAF for 5-25 minutes on the go its best to do so very early in the morning around 5am when the outside temperatures are coldest and your LEAF at its lowest net temperature, or the battery temperature on the lower side of the scale as displayed in the Batter Temperature menu on the dash display computer where many other battery charging metrics & system functions can be adjusted via steering wheel controls.

More than 500,000 Nissan LEAF are on the worlds roads today, though the Model 3 from Tesla the best selling BEV after 2020 & still the best selling EV as of early middle 2023. I looked up the insurance cost for a Model 3, 2.5x than what it costs to insure our Nissan LEAF for the same model year, and the model 3 holds its value better so used ones are not available at steep discounts via depreciation like a used Nissan LEAF for example.

Na-ion, Solid State Batteries, Ceramic Batteries, Foam Batteries, Metal Air Batteries. There are literally more than 100 different alternatives to Lithium Ion batteries commonly used in electric vehicles. Even within the lithium ion space there are over a dozen different chemical options. Consider the LFP or lithium iron phosphate or lithium titanate or lithium sulfur batteries as examples. Lithium Cobalt Oxide cathode with Carbon Anode was just the first mass produced and oldest & most refined version that's also mass manufactured for all sorts of portable electronics today! The overwhelming majority of consumer electronics intended for mobile use cases rely on common lithium ion polymer batteries with a single cell nominal voltage of 3.7-3.85vdc and full charge voltage of 4.26vdc, though stopping charging at 4.11vdc makes these lithium ion batteries last 5x longer. They drain to around 3.0vdc & can be drained to lower voltages but doing so can damage the cell & cause a lasting loss of capacity instantly.

Existing lithium ion batteries do not work well if frozen cold & most EV's have batteries heaters to keep the pack temperature above 40 F in order to prevent freezing. If a lithium ion batteries is frozen & charged it causes lithium metal to plate out of solution & form a hard short circuit & catch fire, venting with flame & toxic smoke contaminate with burning cobalt & burning mylar coated in aluminum. I was charging out an iPhone battery that had been glued into the iPhone in south east Asia instead of being held in with polymer pull tabs the way Apple & Foxconn make em, and upon trying to pry this battery from the machine aluminum case of this older iPhone Plus, the LiPo cell ripped & got super hot & started smoking & then caught fire. This filled the 5000 sq. ft store with blue white smoke & the iPhone burned to a crips and looked like it had been in a hot bar-b-q oven for a while. I knocked the phone off the repair pad & bench into a sand bucket & took it outside & it continued burning & smoking intensely for a while, completely bricking or destroying the iPhone. Thankfully the man who owned it was expected this & had already backed up everything and was looking for an excuse to go buy a new iPhone & was not upset at all.

Still Coffee Crazy, Dark Roasted Espresso Baby :P

Took a deep dive into Espresso with a Eureka Mignon Notte grinder & cheap Espresso machine with an upgraded basket & I even 3D printed solid a tamper for it which works great even with 20kg of pressure applied & a very precise fit to the 51mm stainless steel basket with wood handle :)

I usually pull a Longo shot or use my Aeropress with espresso grind & pour in water at 185-190 F & let give it a stir & then let I hang out & extract for a few minutes, then plunger it, or in the case of the espresso machine I pull a nice double shot & then let the water heater heat up again & then Longo out more water through the coffee.

If I wake up really early before 4am like today, I not only do the above, but I take the spent coffee grinds & put them into a big glass jar & then pour hot water over them & let them steep like a French press for another 5 minutes or more, then rinse the paper filter for the Aeropress & reset it into the holder & then use the Aeropress as a filter, pouring the glass jar mix of hot water & espresso grinds into the Aeropress to filter it into a cup for enjoyment. I call this triple extract coffee grounds "Eisenhower" coffee in reference to WWII encouragement to double brew coffee grinds to conserve coffee for the war effort. I also call this engineering coffee since the grinds have been extracted three times 3x to get even more of what is there in ground roasted coffee beans into a watery emulsion for enjoyment :)

I really like French & Italian dark roasted coffee espresso beans & prefer the toasted charged burned marshmallow leathery bitterness & complex flavors that remind me of camp fires & charred foods that tasty amazing, like grilled to crispy fat from animal flesh or meat :)

Industrial, even the Japanese who are famous for elaborate tea have an obsession with coffee :) Coffee started its life with people in Ethiopia when goat farmers notices their goats acting strangely after eating coffee fruits from wild growing coffee trees that were native to what is now modern day Ethiopia. I love Ethiopian coffee & Kona coffee from Hawaii, but am not a coffee snob & appreciate most any coffee from around the world & glad there exists many styles to choose from with a range of flavors to keep it more interesting & many methods of preparing it to keep me entertained & engaged in the early morning & in those famous James Hoffman YouTube videos :P

Electric Vehicle Benefits EV or BEV

Save money on your taxes with EV incentives even on used EV's with 100+ miles of range :) Even better incentives or tax breaks for purchasers of new model year EV's for that years income taxes. Common electrical prices means filling up a Tesla Model S P100D battery pack with electricity for 300 miles of range only cost about $12 of electricity.

A similarly performing gasoline vehicle like the Model S P100D achieves 10-15 MPG real world fuel economy & requires premium more expensive fuel grades to prevent detonation in their higher compression & boosted or turbocharged or supercharged engines.

With an EV or BEV I am talking about saving thousands of dollars per year on vehicle energy by switching from buying gasoline to buying more electricity from your electrical utility that already sells your many kWh of electricity for your home appliances, lighting, fridge, computers & to charge to portable electrons or COTS.

Our 19 Nissan LEAF S 40kWh $20k all said with 47k ODO

Our used 2019 LEAF 40kWh looks like this
Stock Photo from
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Leaf

I found a nice 2019 Blizzard White 40kWh base model Leaf for $20k out the door all said & made a deal, it had 46,867 miles ODO & the dealer going to fix some issue with the paint & cracked front window replaced, so it was a good deal. Probably a little steep on the price, but the dealer also taking care to tune it up & fix the cosmetic issues with it & replace the cracked front window & it's very clean too.

Apple Watch Series 8 Black with Black Zirconia Ceramic & Stainless Steel Band Kit

Right wrist rocks the latest Apple Watch paired to my iPhone 14. Left wrist a classic digital Casio G-Shock, Citizen Eco-Drive, NH35A automatic 24 jewel 3044 Invicta Grand Diver, Seiko 3R36 Automatic with Metallic Orange Bezel or the OG Seiko 5 4R26 automatic from Overstock.com my first automatic wrist watch, or even a Croton SS & Ceramic quarts from Papa Schwarz or any of several other quartz or automatic movement watches in my collection, the Titanium Eco-Drive my personal favorite- I even recently changed out its 14 year old Lithium Titanate battery with a new one :)

I use Apple Watch as an elaborate Fitness & Sleep tracker, alarm clock, to check the time to set my other watches, to text message & make phone calls, to query Siri, to check the weather & it seems to work great. The ceramic Apple Watch Strap & 8th Gen. Apple Watch survives my submarine water saving shower where I use a few minutes of warm hot water to rinse off, then turn the water off & soap up all the way, then warm rinse off, not every day, more like every 3rd day or about 2x per week or 3x per week during spring, summer and autumn when I am more physically active, sweaty & smell more ripe accordingly. I wash my watched with soap and water so water resistance key functionally to keep them fresh & clean!

I charge my Apple Watch at home using its charging cable magnetic puck into my laptop or into a power adapter in my car that can charge my iPhone lightning port connection & has 2 USB-A outlets with 4.8amps of power, so iPhone & Apple Watch can charge at the same time while I am driving to work. I only do the car charging if I space out during my morning routine since I wake & leave very early as a school bus driver, covering just less than 10 miles one way to get to work, mostly via i90 & i405 to downtown Bellevue, Wa, USA. I love being a school bus driver too :) There are 6 other school bus drivers at the bus hub when I work that have Nissan LEAF or Chevy Bolt EV's. They all love them too & gave me very encouraging advice to get another LEAF after I explained that I leased a 24kWh 2013 LEAF S for 24 months, then purchased a used 2015 Nissan LEAF S and drove it for 3 years and ended up trading it for Meg's Prius III.

Phone calls on the wrist via Apple  like James Bond or Dick Tracy or Inspector Gadget, the Apple Watch has really poor battery life & high maintenance daily charging required in stark contrast to my other watches. I aim to take it off its magnetic charger over USB-C connection to our M2 MacBook Pro when the battery gets to around 80% state of charge. Keeping LiPo batteries in gadgets included EV's between 30-80% makes them last 5-10x longer. It's the top 10% of charging from 90% to 100% that causes the most damage, as does draining to below 5%.

I am nearly ready to buy a lightly used 40kWh Nissan LEAF with Meg's blessing. We have to file our income tax first. I am ready to drive electric again after missing our them 2015 Nissan LEAF S for many years now. That was my most favorite of any car I have ever had. I love the way the Nissan S drives, silent with instant torque. I use a OBDII BlueTooth ELM reader to the LEAF SPY app to get the infographic data on the battery wattage motor & other variables & statistics on the go // to keep an eye on the under the hood operations & electrical actions of the affordable family EV! I will need to update my Geico car insurance to reflect the vehicle change!

Our Apartment all electric too, using 1800-2000kWh per month because my mother likes keeping the indoor temperature around 76F when its 30-50 F outside, resulting in very high energy costs of nearly $280 per month. When she goes to be with God, Meg & I plan to stay here & lower the thermostat settings to 68 F warm and 60F at night & will cut the Comcast Xfinity Triple Play from $220 per month to just blast speed internet for $80 or less per month. We will close out our storage unit, sell the Audi, use the garage & other bedroom to move the storage unit items in so we can gradually sort through them & downsize & summarize, recycle, donate, sell & consolidate our old stuff that's disused in dry storage that we are paying $230 per moth for. That's more than $500 per month in savings upcoming.

I am actually going to buy a Nissan LEAF, BEV in the immediate future after discussing the issue at more length with Meg. We are going to give Alan our 05 Prius II because he will get a lot more use & save a lot more on fuel more quickly on his road trips for work & to visit his grand children. I have enjoyed Astro the Prius for 17 years & it's now time for him to bring Alan gasoline savings at $4.50 per gallon // I found a nice 2019 Blizzard White 40kWh base model Leaf for $20k out the door all said & made a deal, it had 46,867 miles ODO & the dealer going to fix some issue with the paint & cracked front window replaced, so it was a good deal. It drives nice & is very cool & Meg & I really like it! I have visited the Nissan Dealer in Renton & South Bellevue & used their LEVEL 3 fast chargers at 50kw to fast boost the battery pack from 40-69% / keeping the battery charge in the middle of the charge range makes them last a lot longer, up to 5-10x longer than 100% charging & draining to 1% or fully deep cycling. This applies to portable electronics with lithium ion batteries like a smart watch or smart phone or smart clothing or anything lithium ion or Li-ion powered. BEV or battery electric vehicles like the 3rd gen. LEAF 2S that we purchased 4 years old with about 500 cycles on its battery pack. I can still travel more than 135 mi per charge, and takes off like a bat out of hell with instant torque & some 147 HP & 286 ft-lbs of torque, that's around 100kW power & 388 N*m newton meters of torque respectively. Its actually a Second Generation NISSAN LEAF, but I called it 3rd generation because the first in 2010 was 24kWh, then in 2014 and updated version was 30kWh, then in 2018 to 40kWh. Our 2019 features the J1772 LEVEL 2 charging port for ~7kw charging rates & the CHAdeMO LEVEL 3 DC fast charging at up to 50kw, though the rate tapers to 18kw as the charge state approaches 70% & battery temperature increases.

Toyota Prius vs Nissan Leaf

LEAF vs Prius Energy Operating Costs or EOC

Lets say you have $35,000 to spend on a new car, SUV or automobile & you happen to be into energy efficiency or value fuel efficiency or are armchair environmentalist, or technophile like me, then you might wonder which has lower TCO or total cost of ownership, lower OC or operating cost, what the cost in terms of CPM or CPK cost per mile or cost per kilometer, these fuel or energy costs will vary depending on local electrical utility rates for the EV & gasoline prices for the hybrid.

Say that each cost $33,000 out the door, not including insurance, tires, oil changes, electrical energy, fuel, or other soft costs & operating costs, especially the nasty depreciation losses over time. We can know that the Prius will depreciate slightly slower than the LEAF because the early state smaller battery in the LEAF and because of the high reliability & proven durability of Prius models. We can assume they have similar insurance costs.

We can also assume they have similar capacities, aside from range per charge or fill-up respectively. Vehicle registration cheaper for the Prius because EV have to pay surcharges for their lack of contributing to gasoline taxes, here in Washington State, USA. This means $300 a year for the new Prius and $700 per year for the new LEAF for tabs or license plate stickers that verify the vehicle is actively registered in King County where I live.

Using local west coast USA $4/gal gasoline price

Using electrical cost of $0.14/kWh the US national average, though slightly cheaper $0.10/kWh locally

2023 Toyota Prius Eco LE gets about 55 MPG US or 4.4 L/100km

2023 Nissan Leaf 40kWh Battery gets 111 MPGe or uses 30kWh of electricity every 100 miles or 160km

To make the maths easier we will use a block example of my 40 mi daily commute or 200 miles per week or 800 miles per month, going to & from work & home now respectively. Lets examine monthly fuel vs electrical fuel costs for 800 miles

55 MPG for 800 miles means ~15 gallons of gasoline, rounding up slightly or $60 of fuel per month

30kWh per 100 miles means 240kWh @ $0.14/kWh or $33 per month or $24-30 locally

So LEAF electricity for 800 miles cost about 1/2 as much as fuel for a Prius for the same miles

This reminds me of by $0.04 per mile vs $0.09 per mile calculations back in 2013 for LEAF vs Prius meaning electricity cheaper than gasoline, so long as gasoline prices are higher and electricity costs are low, both subject to change and local market conditions that vary considerably worldwide. You can use my method with your numbers to find your personal relative comparison value of operating cost comparisons, all else being equal.

IRL or in real life or in reality, I buy about $80 of gasoline per month or spend about $20 per week to fuel my 05 Prius and Meg spends slightly less to fuel her slightly more efficient newer Prius since it gets closer to 50 MPG and I see more like 44 MPG. Fuelly.com has an interactive search function to let you examine the real world fuel economy averages of many vehicles from most automakers if you want to see for yourself how they perform relatively to each other. Given the scope of decarbonization & banning the sale of new gasoline only fueled cars in 2035, its government regulations, laws & measures against the automakers to force innovation that are driving EV sales & EV development & battery development.

Over the next 10 years EV battery technology will improve a lot, making 55-100 kWh EV batteries, rare-earth free EV IPM motors & SiC power electronics motor controllers more cost effective or cheaper, meaning Tesla slated to launch a sub-compact EV for $20,000 with a 45 kWh battery and 200 HP performance, that can be optioned up to over $30,000 fully loaded. Just as the $35,000 base price Model 3 can be optioned up to over $58,000 fully loaded Plaid edition etc respectively.

Is the Early Days for electric automobiles. Significantly there will be rapid improvements in range per charge such that many emerging EV will have 200, 300, 400, 500, 700, 1000 miles of range per charge as time marches on & electric vehicles continue to improve, specifically the batteries used to store & discharge electrical current in battery electric automobiles. This includes hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles like Toyota Mirai & Honda Clarity. Sodium-ion, Na-Al batteries, Metal Air batteries. New types of fuel cells that can work with propane & DME & other 2nd & 3rd gen biofuels like Green Hydrogen & much cheaper fuels like green natural gas or green CNG.

How do you charge an EV when there is a grid power outage ? With a portable electric generator with a socket neutral ground hot 1/2 watt resistor mod that you can find instructions for online, so you can use the supplied EV-SE charger to charge L1 at 1.6kW so as to pick up 2-5 miles of charge per hour of running your little gasoline generator.

I used a Honda EU2000i to charge our 2015 Nissan Leaf with the aforementioned plug-resistor mod to fake out the GFCI circuit in the EVSE so the generator without a proper ground can accomplish EV charging L1 speeds at 1600 watts of output.

A 13 fluid ounce oil change required every 25 hours of operation for that little generator & it only holds 1 gallon of gasoline, enough for EV charging for about 4 hours. So in 4 hours of charging the LEAF S 30kWh picked up about 15 miles of range from 1 gallon of gasoline, so that's a fuel economy net of 15 MPG // only really feasible in emergencies, noting that the EU2000 generator only converts about 19% of the 1 gallon of fuels 33.7 kWh of chemical energy into useful electrical energy output, that is then transferred at 95% electrical efficiency for Level 1 charging through the EV-SE charging cable that then achieves about 88% efficiency charging the laminate lithium manganese passive air cooled LEAF battery. At every stage the efficiency declines, explaining the 15 MPG result of this solution.

My 2005 Prius II has 158,000 miles and gets 43-48 miles per US gallon of regular gasoline, depending on driving style. When I leased a 2013 Nissan LEAF S $2,000 down & $200/mo with 24 kWh battery I was getting 5.3 miles per kWh. When I purchased $12,000 in 2018 a lightly used low mileage 2015 Nissan Leaf 30kWh I was getting 4.8 miles per kWh. Sadly both LEAF's are gone now. The first was leased and given back at the end of the lease, the later was traded in for my wife's 2010 Prius III. I really want a newer 60kWh LEAF SV Plus, but that would cost close to $40,000 and I do not want a $700 car payment. My 2005 Prius has depreciated to $2,000 trade in value or $3,000 fair market value. I would be perfectly happy with base model 40kWh LEAF, and thankfully those are closer to $30,000 grand, but would still result in a huge cash outlay, and $450 car payment every month. To have nice things you have to pay for them. In physics, nothing is free! They both go A to B so why do I want a new EV? I am crazy! I must be crazy to want a lower powered Nissan LEAF when a Tesla Model 3 would be even better, but I am not about owning a Tesla anything yet!

Meg said keep it under $20K for a used Nissan LEAF 40kWh battery lower mileage in good condition. We have the other hybrid for longer trips & only ever use 1 car when traveling together, so its ok & at any future point we can trade in the LEAF for another better EV or Plug-in Hybrid or ultra high efficiency automobile that is superlative like the Tesla Model 2 or whatever they are calling the cost optimized sedan that launches in by 2027 made in California or Nevada by Tesla Motors that will be the best value in the EV space by huge margins with new battery technology that's cheaper & better that the NCA NMC LFP lithium batteries in current Tesla EV's. The Nissan LEAF has an iconoclastic association in my mind with the emergent EV revolution & I have been a fan or liked it like the NISMO GTR, since 2009. She said, its to like you want some kind of stupid sports car or other wasteful fuel gobbling high powered high performance sports car or SUV, you asking to buy a cream puff lightly used Nissan LEAF, after using your Prius II for 17 years, its not that bad so don't judge yourself for wanting one & you have my blessing to get one as long as you keep the price under $20,000 out the door.

I dream of putting a roof rack on the LEAF & installing a folding set of all black mono-crystalline solar PV modular  that can unfold to make a 2KW solar PV array while its parked, sent to charge the LEAF battery pack for a couple hours per day, perhaps adding 1-8 kWh of captured solar PV energy, enough to drive 3-25 miles on stored sunlight. I think such a setup will cost about $6500 if I aggressively DIY all aspects of it.

It will cost a little more because it has to be a strong mount if I am every going to drive with it folded up at 70+ miles per hour or over 100km/h. It also has to be theft resistant with strong brackets that are very hard to undo without special tools, resistant to a battery powered angle grinder, with a HV electrical shock security system, 4G LTE notification system that sends messages to my Apple Watch or iPhone if someone is messing with it, so I can arm the HV coil inverter system to deliver a less than lethal but painful shock to some bad actor attempting to steal the wires or PV modules.

I will try to make it aerodynamic & low profile & completely water sealed. The Electrical interface the complex part, since the LEAF battery needs 400+ VDC to charge, or I can use micro-inverters on the PV panels & send AC to a modified charging cable setup to pump L1 charging at 1.6KW directly into the charger, like extension cord charging out of a standard electrical outlet at 2-5 miles of charge added per hour of charging. I also like the idea of getting the 60kWh LEAF since that would cover more than 10 days of my commuting too & from work on a single charge. Thankfully, sine 2018 the last time I had a LEAF S, the public L2 charging infrastructure has improved. They even added a bunch of EV charger parking spaces with pedestal dual L2 cable connectors to our Apartment parking lots.

The official plan now to buy a light used newer 40kWh Nissan LEAF outright, pay for it all cash & have no car payment. The Prius II going to Alan so he has a fuel efficient road-trip vehicle to use & that keeps Astro the Prius in the family :) Song & Dance discount for Alan too :)

Signal to Noise Ratio / EV motors & Batteries & Taxes :)

The RF environment in multi-family very busy with Wi-Fi & Bluetooth, but also 4G LTE & 5G + radio AM & FM plus terrestrial analog & digital TV signals. Even satellite beams of RF and radar from cars with newer ADAS systems and traffic speed cameras & other increasingly common sources of RF. Did you know that your microwave oven leaks RF while operating? Mostly back into the neutral wire such that if other sensitive electronics are on the same circuit they can misbehave. At some workplaces the lunch room microwave oven gets used nearly continuously during work hours and this causes problems with sensitive electronics used for diagnostic purposes and specialized scientific equipment. Even power conditioners are of limited use because of the intense back EMF the microwave circuit injects into the neutral wire which is bonded to the ground back at the utility panel. In AC there is really only black or red hot, white neutral & greed ground are earth, bonded to the earthen ground spike usually made of copper alloy that's pounded into the ground near the building.

So how to our smartphones sniff out the right signals in these noise RF environments? Lets consider Wi-Fi channels & channels hopping & MIMO antennas. With these we can signal analyze find which channels are less noisy or less busy and then hop between them actively to keep bandwidth up and improve transceiver performance and signal fidelity or improve the dB of signals almost like a higher gain antenna except we are using software and tuning circuits and information to pick the best channels and dynamically channel hop.

Not all signals are the same, and some squelching can dim off the unwanted frequencies. Not everyone a HAM or amateur radio nerd, but I am KJ7IOF friendly 73 :) I find electricity, circuits, logic,. batteries, electronics, networking, computers & other technologies from the information space very intriguing because of how they affect peoples minds. I use myself as an example, having gained access to the internet as a young teen, I started studying HV electricity & Tesla Coils & Lasers and physics. I am very interested in cryogenics, advanced ceramics, emerging battery technology, faster networking, better communications, better access to information, more transparency, improved technology, new solutions to bottlenecks, faster shipping, lower costs, things that made Amazon.com Prime so popular, they appeal to me to make a better life better faster since I am running out of time alive like everyone else but regularly think about it while driving the school bus or during the early morning hours alone like right now while drinking my coffee :)

What is it about the Dyson V15 connect that makes it so much better than other alternatives. It has more intelligence backed into the design, sometimes in a bad way when a critical part made of plastic that was better made of metal or ceramic. The problem with plastics in high performance application, they break down over time and become dry and brittle and crack. On a positive note most plastics are waterproof and non-conductive, so they simplify power tool designs, but in the gears for example, metals hold up better over time. I say this because plastic gears are an example of design obsolescence, or the manufacturing designing the produce to fail at a specific time after the warranty expires. Such profit generating mechanisms are eco-toxic and produce excess waste & waste people's money while damaging nature faster, all so that an tiny opulent minority of billionaires who want for nothing can make more money, thus such is senseless or foolish or ignorant and creates unnecessary income inequality and increases the divide between the have and have nots in society. See Rich Dad vs Poor Dad and BWM water pump impellers made of plastic and why older higher mileage used BMW's are so unreliable and expensive to repair & maintain.

Automakers like plastics because they are less energy intensive to process than metals at much lower temperatures, meaning cost savings in the manufacture that increase profitability. Replacing metals with plastics also makes vehicles lower mass which improve fuel economy or range in electric vehicles. Plastics reinforcing glass or carbon fiber make CRFP that's really strong, sometimes even better than most metals, and extensively used in military aircraft and even the Boeing 787. CRFP in BMW i3 too as the first carbon fiber intensive EV sold in moderate volumes as a compliance vehicle to comply with fleet level fuel economy regulations that governments impose on automakers like the gas guzzler tax. Hot press stamping hot glue CRFP essential to automotive because autoclaving parts in Teflon bags too costly for consumer vehicle manufacturers and really only make sense in higher value-added parts making for aerospace, or high-end tennis rackets & similar elite sporting goods.

Polymers are the oil companies wet dream application in a post gasoline & diesel future as governments move to ban the sale of ICE vehicles to comply with increasingly stringent fuel reduction & climate measures to reduce acid rain and air pollutants. Its actually tire tread dust to the tune of 9 million tons of microplastics that is one of the leading sources of pollution from automobiles, especially heavy high performance BEV's like the Telsa Model S Plaid edition :) Torque from my previous Nissan LEAF would smoke the front tires, and that instant acceleration in an EV makes driving them loads of fun if you do not miss the exhaust & engine noise of high performance turbocharged gasoline & diesel engines that people associated with fun :) Electric motors give EV amazing nearly silent acceleration that shoves you into the seat & puts a grin on your face, something I really miss about the LEAF but its limited battery range & high registration fee's of over $600 per year vs $120 for my Prius, made that less fun. I hate being ripped off. I hate overpaying for anything. I would like to think that driving an EV that does not emit local air pollution would net a reduction in in registration fee's, not an increase.

Governments are weird about wireless networks too. Look at your cell phone bill. What are all of those taxes. Your wireless carrier advertising told you $50 per month, but your bill is $90 after all the stupid add on fee's and taxes. What gives? Well, that's garbage & moderately dishonest, but the wireless company cannot tell you exactly what the fee's will be since those vary by location, such that some cities have more or less taxes added to cell phone bills. The creativity of government to invent new forms of taxation almost as absurd as their quantum easing of fiat currencies or currency manipulation of fragile fiat currencies like the US dollar or Euro or RMB in China. Gold & silver & platinum & palladium coins and bars are real money and maintain their value over long periods and have intrinsic liquidity in nearly every local worldwide to convert to the local currency in real time or on demand, and become especially valuable when there is a blackout of the grid and credit and debit cards are not working & when power cash becomes worthless during a war in the Ukraine for example or during a major earthquake or electrical storm from a CME from the SUN that kocks out grid power for prolonged time periods.

WiFi Internet the Ultimate App

It can be 3G or 4G LTE or 5G on your mobile phone "smartphone" ahem. Have you been to a library lately, they look like internet cafes without the $6 latte coffee or espresso drinks popular with hipsters in urban locals. "Can I get a dirty chai with organic free range soy foam at 123 F please"

Was it dark chocolate sauce or the caffein in your green tea that got you high to the point of being addicted to living. Do you even know what you are doing? Try unplugging your homes wifi router & turn off your smartphone or any other wireless networking device and read a paper printed book. Boom, you will be in the boring slow past when nothing changed quickly enough to make a meaningful difference. Think tree haters that did not recycle paper or plastic or metal or glass because such services were not widely available as world wide waste increased alongside the human population explosion that increased the number of people alive at the same time from 2 billion in 1940 to 8 billion + in 2023.

People are materialistic & selfish by nature! Look at how people with money spend it!

Cars & automobiles in America are almost all the same if you zoom out and look at the wheels & windows and rounded rectangular box wedge shapes of the sheet metal & plastics. They go A to B with people and stuff like a bag of groceries inside, parents & children, or friends commuting together to work at the same or nearby locations. A bus is the most efficient transportation solution on a road and highway spread out country with urban sprawl into suburban & urban areas as people are forced to drive further until they can afford to buy, since the land nearby so expensive that homes cost 20x their annual income or more, where apartment rent eats up most of the regular workers income.

Light Rail paid for by drivers paying higher registration RTA tax fee's decades behind schedule and 200% over budget. Emblematic of inefficient bureaucracy in America.

WTF are you looking at online. I see people staring into their smartphones like they are staring at their shoes or feet or sandals. I write these blog posting & do my research on a laptop, in this case a 2014 acer that barely works with windows 10, it shipped with windows 8 and cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. It does however run Grand Theft Auto V at really slow framerates on the integrated GPU of its antiquated low power Core i5, probably with 35w TDP from 2013, so not exactly a gaming PC, it even features a glass touchscreen LED LCD that has a nice dimming range :)

I have way to many electronics and most of them only do what they can with wifi access to the internet. I was using the AccuWeather App on my 2014 Kyocera Brigadier for example, which only works with wifi now because it does not have an active SIM card anymore. Back then I was paying Verizon too much per month for mediocre access to slow mobile internet on a very rugged by slow laggy android phone that was promoted by Bear Grilles, it even has a synthetic sapphire screen and an ultrasonic transducer that turns that big roughly rectangular slab of aluminum oxide crystal into a very loud speaker, way louder than any other cell phone I have used, which is great on a construction worksite or other area where there are loud background noises that make a voice call hard to hear on other phones, and surely enough this rugged android phone was marketed to construction workers. Its weak sealed internal lithium ion battery faded very quickly. At the time I was working as an Amazon Flex driver and needed an android phone with the Flex app sideloaded, and iPhone was not supported.

I paid $400 for this Kyocera Brigadier and when I went to ask Verizon about a trade in credit they offered me $5, so I kept it, reasoning that I could harvest the sapphire window & transducer & magnets & other fun to make art & science project parts :) It still works. I popped it onto a very old high-end QI wireless inductive charger from my late brother in law Drake, and gave it a full 100% saturation charge. Playing with it to look up the weather, weather forecast, radar map, hourly, daily, weekly, temp & precipitation / it was losing 1% per minute or has about 100 minutes of battery life now. I have pondered taking it apart to install a fresh LiPo battery, but that requires me to use weird expensive liquid sealing to replace the polymer adhesive gaskets I had to defeat to replace the battery.

SIM cars are giving way to e-SIM since a new smartphone like the S23 from Samsung or iP14 from Apple can hold up to 8 e-SIM numbers and have 2 active e-SIM or two phone numbers to the same device. No physical sim means your sim cannot be removed or stollen either. All future iPhones are going with e-SIM or electronic subscriber identity modules. The SIM or e-SIM tells the network if you have a paid active account, either prepaid or billed monthly, hence the subscriber title.

Comcast Xfinity the magic behind all your connected devices. Or 4G LTE or 5G, its the access to the internet that creates all the sizzle in these slabs of minerals. Yes, your smartphone a slab of minerals, metals, plastics, glasses, rare-earths, magnets & more. Thats what Kyocera was making synthetic sapphire for the Brigadier, they are a ceramics company in Japan. Kyocera makes exceptional ceramic knives of very high quality.

Sparkplugs in ICE or internal combust engines, by NGK, or TBD coatings in aerospace & aircraft engines, even high-end watch bands & wrist watches & artificial teeth are made with exceptional high strength ceramics or super ceramics like alumina doped zirconia or Zircon :) I got a Zirconia black band for my 41mm Series 8 Apple Watch & gave me a white zirconia band for her Series 5 Apple.

Batteries are what make portable electronics work, and like Wi-Fi or LTE or 5 watch. Meg has a zirconia tooth that triggered my research into advanced ceramics. G, without good batteries these smart devices do not work well, other than as complex paper weights or door stops. Ceramic batteries are solid state technology designed to address all of the fire & temperature sensitivity issues created  by liquid electrolytes in common lithium polymer batteries. Solid state polymer and ceramic batteries will enable MW level 4 charging in 10 minutes or less of next generation EV's.

Tesla even speculated to be launching a sub $20k EV using the latest lighter smaller cheaper battery technology that cobalt free using silicon in the anode & more aluminum in the cathode. Tesla also figured out how to make IPM internal permanent magnet motors without rare-earth magnets. Tesla also making no-magnet induction traction motors. But the IPM offers superlative energy efficiency while cruising at speeds on the highway or freeway or byway or roads. Ceramics like SiC are very important for high-power electronics in electric vehicle motor controllers to convert battery DC current at thousands of amps into many dozens or hundreds of kW of power to move the vehicle.

Tesla BEV's are connected 4G LTE devices, and have a lot in common with a smartphone, with over the air updates or downloads & mobile networking. God help us if a bad CME hits Earth and knocks out all the digital fun. Electricity is the real magic making it all happen. Tesla also innovating into very cheap $0.02 per watt gen 3.5 solar PV roof tiles to make rooftop solar energy systems that more people can afford, so they have extra money to buy 2 Tesla Powerwall's to store the PV generation so they have electricity to watch Amazon Prime videos of Jeremey Clarkston Farming, at night when its dark when they get home from work :P Electricity to power the oil filled space heater & oven & fridge & comcast internet router & cable box, to charge your phone or power your gaming computer, to wash your clothes or heat your water or run your microwave oven.

Computational Imaging TPU Apple A15 TSMC Amazon Arm AWS Cloud & Google Image Search

If you take a look at all the data companies online with an app like Ookla Speed Test to see what websites are trending you might notice something that goes beyond the basic surface scope of e-commerce popular websites like Amazon.com, Alibaba.com, Ebay.com, Google.com, Apple.com, its a departure from Von Neumann computational architectures to convolutional neural networks on custom CMOS FPGP trained neural networks.

Consider the scope of CCD to CMOS image sensor development. In the former case of the CCD or charge coupled device, you have a rectangular array of photo sensitive capacitors which register voltage as photons hit these charged pixel sensors in the CCD. The logic then measures changes to the cells in the CCD to determine the color & intensity of the light hitting the sensor. This not very energy efficient because the CCD contains very little if any information processing power & basically a dumb sensor that just produces a stream of electrical signals that software can then assemble through custom gate logic into imaging at different frame rates.

In portable electronics the CCD never did well because they are energy intensive because of the need to actively energize all the CCD pixels. CMOS offered lower imaging performance at first, but as the technology improved CMOS gave the advantage of computational image processing in the imaging chip, such that a lot of the information processing required to turn the raw sensor data into a image file can be done in a massively parallel fashion like RISC GPU random X mining later supplanted by application specific ASIC compute that's massively more efficient with radically higher performance. In a cell phone analogy, CCD was the Feature Phone while CMOS was the smartphone equivalent.

So why does imaging matter anyway? Pictures are for the living & help big corporations sell large quantities of goods & services by performing mental inception using branding images with logos and names that have aspirational meaning through experience that often transcends the function of the product or service. Consider a luxury mechanical wristwatch that is less accurate with time than a cheap digital quarts plastic sport watch, that wearing it as a status symbol or for enjoyment or entertainment has more to do with a person's subjective appreciation for it. Few young children are able to appreciate what makes a Rolex Submariner or the Omega Seamaster special as mechanical automatic wristwatches.

TPU and Neuromorphic Compute

Trillions of operations per second in a smartphone. Camera's being the big app such that newer smartphones like the iPhone 14 line from Apple have large fractions of the SOC dedicated to computational photography such that the latest iPhones cameras have features and functions well beyond what is possible using the Sony BSI CMOS "complementary metal oxide semiconductor" actions. This means that iPhones can captures still images & video with superlative image quality, improved faster autofocus & subject tracking, artificial focus to accurately produce shallow depth of field portraits with tasty, elegant, blurred backgrounds.

Tensor Flow

When a large Alphabet Inc. company with a powerful product like Google Search wants to vertically integrate the development of software and hardware, this produces products like Tesla Autopilot that uses imaging sensors to identify pedestrians, road demarcation lane lines, stop signs, other vehicles, bicycles, scooters, motorcycles, pets and animals & many other objects or subjects that can spontaneously and unpredictably appear Infront of a moving vehicle. Consider how many fatal vehicle accidents there are every day worldwide.

We cant even making flushing toilets for 8 billion people, but we can bake a rolling data center in the latest Tesla Model battery electric car or SUV, automobiles popular in car crazy America where public transportation offers a slower less effective alternative than driving your own car, cars which often sit unused 90% of the time while the person working, sleeping, shopping, cooking, paying bills, making deals, trading, recycling, playing sports, hiking, working out, planning, reading, or any of the other activities that people regularly do. Tensor Flow a bunch of software tools from Google to allow you or anyone else to develop AI applications to improve your productivity or performance. This can enable you to make your company more profitable & improve customer service & customer experiences.

TSMC been deep 5nm EUV baking neuromorphic compute cores into Apple SOC since A11 back then! The latest iPhone 14 can make L & S band n52 contact to a constellation of Globalstar Inc satellites for Emergency SOS messaging where no other wireless services are available, like on the side of a stratovolcano where you might be hiking & become stranded because of a landslide or similar natural hazard or disaster like volcanic eruption & lahar flow of magma & trees & massive amounts of hot gas & soot & ash. QUALCOMM's latest 6nm 5G NR transceiver in the iPhone 14 so high performance that an oval plastic cutout on the right side of the phone covered with a plastic required, since the antenna lines and other RF features in the frame were not sufficient to support ultra energy efficient sub 6G beam steering or synthetic aperture beam control of the wireless to enable the iPhone 14 onward to connect to space satellites without a large clunky antenna.

128 GB iPhone 14 "Starlight" my new Smartphone

After about 3 years with the iPhone SE2 it was time for a fresh start in the bigger iPhone 14. Using the old iPhone to transfer all its files & settings to the new one took about 40 minutes over Comcast Xfinity wife at home and was very simple and intuitive.

Level 3 EV Fast Charging Debacle / Boom Pop & Your Stuck using an EVSE extension cord charger for 3-5 mi of range added per hour of charging

Most EV owners & lessees have Level 2 chargers' setup in their homes garage where they park their EV at nighttime & some even have an EVSE L1 charger plugged into a typical outdoor electrical outlet on their home for all night slow charging speeds which only add a few miles of charge to the EV battery per hour of charging.

Thankfully most EV drivers park their cars at home for 8+ hours on most days, giving ample opportunity to pick up useful commuting range levels of battery charge to energize an EV commute without public charging station use. They installed a bunch of Level 2 pedestal charging stations parking spaces at Anthology the overpriced luxury apartment complex we live in with my elderly disabled mother.

Gun Control Deception in America

Gun do not cause violence or crime, while criminals do not care about laws, so gun laws are not ineffective at reducing crimes caused by felons who do not care about gun laws.

If you look at the causes of violence & crime in America, they have nothing to do with guns. Firstly, guns are a purely mechanical device powered by a chemical reaction inside the bullet when the firing pin impacts the pressure sensitive explosive in the bullets primer which forces a stream of high temperature gas into the bullets powder producing a chemical reaction that generates up to 50,000 PSI to shove the metal bullet slog down the spiral grove barrel at thousands of feet per second, where the copper coated lead slug pressure slides in the barre groves which impart mechanical spin to the bullet to make spin stabilization to improve the trajectory of the bullet. This works better in longer rifle barrels than a typical pistol barrel, which is why rifles have better ballistic performance, better range & better accuracy.

The First Automobile

The H-16 - and other highly unusual engine designs (msn.com)

Single-cylinder gasoline engine automobile in 1885. Single-cylinder internal combustion engines date back to first identifiable car, the 1885 Benz Patent-Motorwagen. A 954cc four-stroke motor mounted underneath the passenger’s bench seat, generating less than 1 hp.

Simple to produce and work on, and it quickly grew in power to 2 hp. Single-cylinder engines have been used ever since in a variety of lightweight scooters, motorcycles, lawn & garden equipment, backup generators & similar devices with between 1-50 KW of engine power, like a super flow tuned 125cc single cylinder shifter kart engines, & even some very slow low powered early  carbureted hand crank started economy cars. The fuel efficient low mass design now in a renaissance due to its suitability as a range-extender generator powering unit for electric cars with smaller 50kWh battery packs, or as a road trip range extension power source for long range use in vehicles like the rotary energy generator 2023-24 MY Mazda MX30 Plug-in Hybrid automobile :)

Piston Engine Air Pollution Pumping Climate Change & Toxic Exhaust Emissions Making Pure Power with Fantastic Exhaust Sounds

A petro-licious gear head motorcycle, aircraft, automotive, and energy geek nerd enthusiast through & through, I found my wheelhouse with a 05 Prius II via hypermiling regen experience, block heating the 1NX-FXE with an extension cord even at my apartment parking lot all winter. Its given me 44-52 MPG on regular pump gasoline for its entire life of more than 160,000 miles so far without every breaking down & keeps going, even with the OEM hybrid battery in perfect condition. But the numb driving experience via electric power steering & relatively noisy harsh ride make for a less favorable experience.

Modern life exists on a knife edge, that knife made of grid power electricity. If the power turns off for a prolonged period, everything will go to seed in short order. I am writing to warm you about this, because you need to prepare for when bullets, water bottles & toilet paper become the most valuable things that gold & silver can buy.

The mental focus cycling workload I do with the Scan Guage 2 keeps my mind active as I glance at its monochromatic LCD data channels to monitory engine & air temps, & many other variables that can be cycled with buttons on the corners of the display frame, which is mounted below the central stereo console fits perfectly in the little door covered holder pocket, that I wired an OBDII connector into so the Scan Guage 2 can connect to the OBDII port under the steering wheel area of the dashboard. I use this to monitor engine & battery parameters while hypermiling to eek out even better performance while still getting stellar fuel economy using tricks I learned via Wayne Gerdes on Green Car Congress & Autoblog/Green many years ago :) I also use the Scan-gauge 2 to clear OBDII MIL warning codes 0000 & 0420 that happen now after replacing the stollen OEM Catalytic Converter & downstream O2 sensor, as the aftermarket very cheap solution has different thermal electrical properties so the O2 sensor sends the wrong voltage range to the ECU as the engine temp approaches 177 F, on its way to 186 F full operating temperature, trigger the MIL lamps with the aforementioned codes retrieved & erased by the Scan Gauge 2 or a very cheap OBDII tool in Meg's 2010 Prius because it suffered the same Catalytic Converter & downstream O2 sensor theft issue as my 05 Prius.

You can obtain up to 30-40% better fuel economy by simply using light hypermiling driving techniques like not rapid acceleration, maintaining your speed by predictive traffic lights & traffic patterns up ahead, keeping more of your speed in corners only when its clear and safe to do so, going 15 mph instead of 7 around the corner; removing extra cargo from your car, stuff in the trunk, in some cases like removing 2 average adults of mass, which improves performance & fuel economy at the same time, especially improving cornering & handling performance. Think safe, smooth, steady, predictive driving with forward patterns analysis & watch other pedestrians, people on bicycles or kick scooters or electric scooters & other cars, trucks, SUV's, School Buses & work trucks to make sure they are driving safe & not posing an immediate of upcoming hazard to your route of travel.

There are hybrid, plug in hybrid, pure electric, battery electric, fuel-cell electric, RF electric, ZPE electric, nuclear fission electric vehicles like aircraft carriers sub submarines. As of February 2023, there are more than 100 battery electric passenger vehicles for sale from the world's automakers that have superior energy efficiency than even the best gasoline fueled Toyota Prius Prime or similar. Sodium Ion battery electric vehicles are emerging as a way to overcome the higher cost of cobalt & lithium supply chain issues while magnet-less electric motors are enabling a way to bypass the use of expensive rare earth metals supplied & controlled by China. Radical advances in AC motor controllers & high-power silicon carbide switching chip motor controller circuitry enabling even better range & performance in existing & near-term electric cars & similar electric motorcycles or electric passenger vehicles, even the electric kick scooters & other personal mobility devices that I really like, in the Segway MP for example.

Gasoline engines, like the very popular 2L 4cyclindar engines used by 22 automakers across 600 different vehicles, in naturally aspirated flavors for lower power solutions while supercharging & turbocharging & direct injection & variable valve timing & electronic ignition control make exceptional 350+ HP & similar torque figures, well more than 100 HP per liter, in the piston powered helicopter engine power to mass performance envelope range like the common turbo ROTAX motors in such small lite 2 seater helicopters not powered by expensive turbine engines that are featured in much more costly Helicopters, where piston powered versions are hundreds of thousands of dollars, the turbine powered models cost millions of dollars. With operating costs of $400-5000 per hour, helicopters are expensive to operate, largely because of their regular costly maintenance costs, but also because of helicopter fuel costs & low passenger or low cargo mass carrying capacities, meaning very high cost per hour per seat where aircraft like the 777 from Boeing able to fly for $2 per person per hour of flight when fully loaded with 450+ passengers, by comparison.

Air mostly nitrogen, giving rise to NOX in combustion engine exhaust emissions, that can be reduced back to N2 with catalytic converters, but this not always cost effective or practical, in many lawn & garden tools, pressure washers, generators, lawn mower, chain saws, or other mass sensitive applications where small 2 stroke motors are still used legally even in countries with strict emission controls regulations & laws. Small oil fuel mix 2 stoke engines emit up to 200x more toxic emissions per gallon of fuel used than a common gasoline fueled automobile model year 2014 of newer.

Modern Diesel school buses like the one I drive as a School Bus Driver, Class B CDL holder, have more than $30,000 of exhaust emissions controls installed to clean up the CUMMINS diesel engine exhaust emission, with DEF injection & particulate filters & other selective exhaust emission control methods to reduce toxic emission in the exhaust gases, to reduce harmful emission in the vicinity of where the bus engines are running. This important because Students have younger more sensitive lung cells more easily harmed by diesel exhaust pollutants. In many ways, traditional petrochemical diesel a finite dead end of climate changing toxic air pollution, but DME fuel conversion & hydro-diesel & biodiesel retrofitting of existing diesel engines enables a lower cost pathway to emissions reductions to improve local air quality for the benefit of improving local public health improved by reducing air pollutant exposure to toxic vehicle exhaust emissions.

Synthetic fuels that are far cleaner burning, that enhance engine oil life, make few toxic emissions when compared with traditional fuels, for example GTL or gas to liquids fuels by Shell, made of gasified coal or natural gas, which can be recovered from agricultural waste ponds of pig poop or cattle dung or via trash dump natural gas recovery, or even just pipelining natural gas from oil & gas operations that currently flare it off as a waste product, to be sold as a market commodity.

Energy will become a very important topic worldwide in both economic & political arenas. as well as continuing to trend in the public consciousness & mass media because of its social, personal & financial effects on individual working members of the public, their parents & children & grandchildren, neighbors, communities. For air conditioning or HVAC for heating & cooling buildings & vehicles, even electric ones. I woke up at 4 am thinking about heat pumps & how to make solid state water bottles that chill beverages using DC current & the latest fan-less chipset cooler technology. Chilling a beverage for consumption might sound odd given the current winter weather conditions of sub-freezing air, ice, snow, but think ahead to hot summer weather & a cold beer or chilled glass of sweet white wine, though a Gin & Tonic with fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice, sour, tart, bitter & tannic, with some floral & citrus notes, that's more my jam. That involves keeping the Tonic water cool, making ice cubes by freezing water, keeping the lemons & limes cool to enhance their shelf life. Want to make on demand on the go, well that might only be worth a few dollars, if you stop to buy a bag of ice from a gas station or similar place on the road, but I assure you, making ice very important. Consider the value of portable vaccine fridges with helium coolant Stirling cryocoolers that cool to -80 C, similar to a portable cooler in size & mass, they can cost tens of thousands of dollars like some sort of aerospace part! Ultracold, deep freezing on the go a particular hard challenge to do on very small scales.

Many industrial processes that are feasible to conduct on large throughput operations often fail to be realized at the personal scale, like the Harvest Right Home Freeze Dryer made in Utah, USA. Making something that is cheap & easy to use that also does something amazing using technology becomes a headache when you have to run a vacuum pump with frequent oil changes of light refined mineral oil lubricant because the exhaust gas stream exiting to sublimination cool dried food contaminates the hot oil in the vacuum pump.

Using such technologies in mobile platforms becomes even more complicated as making that kind of 2000+ watts of electricity for 40+ hours continuously not an insignificant engineering challenge, & given the value of multiple KW portable energy storage & portable power generation technologies, with value in directed energy weapons applications, makes such systems maintenance heavy in the case of power generators, think air cooled with engine oil changes every 25-50 hours of operation, or $2-5 USD2023 per kilowatt hour of energy made. So operating an energy gobbling heat pump, deep freezer, vacuum pump, on the go, means you need an RV with a robust expensive electrical system, usually plugged into the grid or mains, since making thousands of watts with roof mounted PV that's also water proof & sturdily mounted so wind pressure does not rip them off at freeway speeds, this not cheap or easy, and storing many tens of kilowatt hours of electricity means an array of non-trivially costly batteries & charge controllers & relays & wiring & connectors & so forth.

Yes, recreating the power grid in a portable system means a large vehicles with many KW of power. This is why automotive engineers used gasoline & diesel fueled engines. Thermal engines like the 2 liter 4 cylinder engines popular with automakers today offer 80-300 KW of power, with 10-45 MPG or 14 to 3.8 liters of fuel per 100km of fuel economy respectively. Thats a lot of energy on the go in a relatively small package in terms of volume. The high-performance engines are turbocharged. 500cc displacement for each cylinder makes a special balance in engines that engine engineers discovered after more than 100 years of piston engine redesigns & optimizations. While most cars & automobiles available to common vehicle buyers today offer 150+ kw of performance with fuel economy of 24-30 MPG or around 6-9 liters per 100 km fuel economy. Thats with engines with thermal efficiency lower than 40% at converting the fuels chemical energy into power to move the vehicle down the road & run all the driver assists & other sizzle technologies via the alternator generator or similar DC power converters in AC drive battery electric vehicles.

Consider the BMW I3-REx, in particular the 22kw range extending generator with 600lbs of mass added to the range extended versions of that CRFP intensive compliance vehicle made in medium volumes to sell in markets with complex emissions control laws & fleet fuel economy standards. Since BMW makes motorcycles, they borrowed that 600cc twin engine from one of their other products, then beefed up an magneto design for the crankshaft to turn it into a power generator. Automobile solutions like that are expected to last 3000 hours & required maintenance every few hundred hours of operation or every few thousand miles of operation. If you wonder why an automobile engine requires less oil change frequency than your portable power generator, then consider the cost. At higher cost structures its possible to make better longer lasting engines.

Consider what Toyota did in the 1NZ-FXE engine in the 04-09 Prius, that's totally impractical to do in a $2000 or less emergency backup generator. My 2020 Yamaha MT-03 motorcycle puts down about 37 hp to the rear wheels with some 45 HP made in the 321cc offset DIASil aluminum engine refined in the R3, with O2 sensor ECU fuel injection emissions controls & catalytic converters, it 56-84 MPG with a tank of ~14 L or 3.5 gal, so range many hundreds of miles before cheap 5 minute refueling at a retail gas station, of which their are many locally & many millions worldwide. Thats a hard system to replace with electrical outlets, EV charging & battery electric vehicles for 10+ billion people. I mention this MT-03 because its ~30kw engine & 373 lb mass, when similar bikes that weigh 50lb more make 3x or 4x more power from larger engines, like the middle weight ADV bikes with 600-800cc engines. I actually wanted a Honda CB500F when Meg purchased me the Yamaha MT-03, but they were not available because of COVID. We did not even know about the MT-03 when I discovered it & the DARK SIDE OF JAPAN Master of Torque ideas from Yamaha's marketing department :)

Will this or that vehicle work during a prolonged global power outage? Keep it in a metal shed, with a metal floor, metal doors, a Faraday Cage, all electrically bonded to ground & maybe the ECU & fuel injection & battery & other electronics & chips essential for your vehicle to function, might still work after the CME blows out most other grid connected electrical devices of all kinds & types. You can remove the battery from your smartphone, wrap the phone in plastic wrap, then wrap that in aluminum foil & place that into a metal ammo can with metal lid & close that, put that into a metal safe, it might still work, but how will you charge it. Will the cell systems, Wi-Fi routers, internet or anything else still work? You can kiss your Steam gaming & YouTube & streaming Netflix goodbye. Bullets, water bottles & toilet paper become the most valuable commodities when society falls apart & crime lords with armed gangs of warped sickos take over. Good luck finding gasoline for sale. Fridges, microwave ovens, electric stoves, washing machines, dryers, most of the sizzle that makes warm homes in the winter, even the blower motor fan in the furnace, required electricity to function.

Without electricity, modern society does not work, cannot function. Societies with electricity that are suddenly forced to operate without electricity are similar to societies that get the fuel cutoff with higher prices, think recession or stagflation or the opposite of progress & development, degeneration, social decay & crime escalation into chaos & worse than war like conditions. All those electric vehicles are useless without a way to recharge the 100kWh battery pack. Sure, the rooftop solar PV on the elite homes will work with the Tesla Charger wall station for that latest Model S3XY etc, but where will they go when none of the traffic intersection controller lights are working, when all the stores are closed, long ago looted to nothing in stock by ravenous hungry desperate people just tryng to survive the land of the dead when the lights are turned off for 6+ months & 90% of the human population dies off in short order.

I found this when researching this F17 gaming laptop power efficiency settings, vs performance for playing No Man's Sky or other Steam games :)

Updates to the default Screen and sleep settings now help you use energy more efficiently and extend battery life.
Save energy

We need energy to power our electronic devices. When energy is produced, carbon is often emitted. This is because much of the world’s energy today is created through the burning of fossil fuels.

Microsoft is committed to reducing the environmental impact caused by the energy use of our products, including when devices are idle. With power efficient settings, you don’t need to worry about using energy on your device when it’s idle—Screen and sleep settings will put your device in a low power state while you’re not using it.
Help improve battery life

Lithium-ion batteries age over time, which can result in a battery not holding a charge for as long as it did when it was new. The capacity of lithium-ion cells is reduced after a certain number of times the battery is charged and then discharged. As a result, you’ll need to charge your battery more often, and the overall battery capacity may be lower. Power efficient settings help extend your battery life by minimizing the amount of battery needed to power your device when you’re not using it. These settings turn off your screen and put your device to sleep when not in use.
Reduce Emissions

Because much of our energy today is produced from the burning of fossil fuels, reducing the amount of energy we consume results in fewer carbon emissions. Together, we can help reduce our carbon impact for computers by using power efficient settings.
Updated default Screen and sleep settings
Windows defaults for Screen and sleep have been updated to reduce energy use when your device is idle. The tables below show the new default values for Screen and sleep.

Solid State Chip Cooling Airjet Frore Systems

Seshu Madhavapeddy, Founder & CEO @ Frore Systems

The company's solid state cooling device - called AirJet. Learn how AirJet works & the benefits of solid state cooling in devices.

Future of cooling? https://youtu.be/YGxTnGEAx3E

Able to produce 10x more back pressure than a traditional thin notebook fan thermal cooling solution, it is able to suck air through IP68 dust filters

This technology made using semiconductor MEMS technology developed by Texas Instruments originally to make the membrane flexing that produces the amazing functionality possible in a tiny thin form factor that combines a copper heat spreader with the flexing membrane to pump heat with high static pressure by sucking cool air into the device & shoving it at high velocity tangentially with jet impingement to break through the boundary layer on the copper spreader to efficiently transfer heat from the copper to the cooling air shoved out of the small aperture thin rectangular ejection port to push heat out of the device, especially useful in tablet computers, smartphones, laptops & other thin form factor compute that requires active cooling for higher performance.

Mushrooms Anti-Viral Medications / National Security Value of Forests & Bee's

Given the scope of bio-weapons like the COVID19 virus, effective anti-viral medications have national security value for protecting a nation from a biological pathogenic viral attack, essential for addressing Chinese CCP cluster drone droplet spraying facial recognition digital swarm population attack drones with almost no radar signature made of optically clear plastics that find human & ID faces & listen to vocal patterns & then spray the human in the face with a small bottle of biological viral pathogen solution to cause respiratory injection of a significant viral load to make the person sprayed contagious to other people, highjacking the infected persons immune system to make trillions of copies of the viral pathogen that the person then breathes out as micro-droplets in breath & while speaking, breathing, coughing or sneezing without a face mask or similar respiratory filter to stop the movement of these viral vectoring droplets.

The US CDC produced briefing slides about drone cluster viral delivery of viral pathogens in room temperature solutions on small plastic battery electric drone deployed from a larger charging system cruise missile delivery rocket or large electric long distance low emission aircraft drone unmanned vehicle. Agents at the CIA, FBI, NSA, DOD & other government branches were given detailed instructions about the national security value of forests, bee's, & the amazing anti-viral agents made by healthy forest ecosystem mushrooms with potent ability to prevent bee colony collapse disorders by improving the gut biome of bee's so they can break down toxic chemical pesticides & fungicides & herbicides in their gut biome while eating plant sugars pollen & similar carbs while out forging on crops sprayed with pest control chemicals while the bee's are out flying around pollinating. So we can produce life saving anti-viral medications & help the bee's at the same time by protecting old growth forests, with ecological restoration, with ecosystem protection, with national park creation, with development bans & similar measures to prevent industrialization damage to food webs.

Today nearly 9 billion humans are alive at the same time & what was required to make this happen & to continue making it happen has caused widespread ecosystem damage worldwide, such that 30% of the natural ecosystem diversity will be gone forever if we do not immediately start doing progressive natural system restoration & protection activities for national security reasons. The strategic importance of forests for water & air quality, for fishing, for anti-viral agent production, for bee health, for people, for national security, can not be overstated.

Forests are exceedingly important to humanity for many reasons. They produce soil be the decaying vegetation on the soil floor. Fungi are the wood recyclers in forests that break down rotting logs into soil & water & nutrients. Fungi also eat rocks with special enzymes that break mineral nutrients off rocks, so they are natures great recycler. Like humans, mushroom mycelium breathes in air & breathes out CO2, so we have something in common with mushrooms.

Humans & Mushrooms

Human culinary use of mushrooms ancient & many peoples throughout history have consumed psilocybin containing mushroom in order to achieve an inner spiritual experience. As a polar molecular, psilocybin can cross the blood brain barrier, where it is de-phosphorated into psilocin, also known as 4-HO-DMT, 4-hydroxy DMT, psilocine, psilocyn, or psilotsin, respectively, an alkaloid with potent CNS effects by binding like serotonin to 5HTA2 receptors widely associated with potential semi-synthetic psychedelic substances like LSD25 & MDMA, though the latter are "Dirty" because of how they activate many other neuron cleft synapse pores or neurotransmitter receptors. Different magic mushrooms contain varying ratios of several other related structural analogs of psilocybin that are thought to have an entourage effect or synergism that modulates the psychedelic trip experience, though set & setting our your mindset & where you use them more important.

Healthy Healing Mindset & Safe Secure Space Settings for a Happy Trip

You want to be in safe place where you feel comfortable & safe with a sane sitter to help you though the difficult parts of deep inner healing. I suggest eyes closed laying with pillows on a soft surface where you can roll around comfortably since you probably going to cry your eyes out from the beautiful nature of the experience or in combination with profound deep inner healing & inner forgiveness of yourself & other people who may have caused a traumatic memory or psyche injury, including what happens to police officers & military personnel or children who are physically or sexually abused (I know all about these personally, sadly) & have plans to take magic mushrooms in order to achieve deep inner healing.

Clean Industrialization Revolution

We Must Clean Up Human Activity with Environmental Ethics : Stewardship Morality & Best Practices - Radical Pollution Reduction - Renewable & Sustainable Development - Radically Improved Energy Storage & Energy Efficiency & New Nuclear & More Renewable + especially including solar PV module & lithium ion battery recycling, sodium ion battery production, wind turbine blade recycling & a range of other energy storage technologies. Electrical energy the most important technical subject since its essential for modern economies to operate, without which all modern life will grind to a half & fail killing off 90% of people within 6 months if there is a global power outage, especially nasty impacts in Urban areas.

Global Environmental Awakening Emergent

A great global awakening happening because of rampant overkill industrialization associate with the enormous scale of human activity at the 9+ billion people at the same time level. Given the materialistic popularity of excess consumption of goods associated with increased standards of living, especially per capita increases in energy consumption, we can no longer embrace the 4th industrial & 5th industrial revolutions without making radical environmental & eco-friendly changes to human activity to reduce harm imposed on nature through processes known as externalities or tragedy of the commons like air pollution from burning coal, gas, diesel, jet & rocket fuels, or water pollutions like chemical endocrine disrupting carcinogenic toxic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical weapons & industrial chemical waste, including oil refining waste emissions of solid, liquid & gaseous toxic pollution, heavy metal ion waste from mining, heavy metal waste from industrial waste, tire & brake dust, plastic pollution & micro plastics, space trash & many other forms of illogical ignorant foolish waste caused by incoherent inconsiderate industrialization III.

Variable Forest Canopy Essential

Ignorant forest practices to make paper, toiler paper, paper towels, cardboard, packaging & box cardboard & many other wood fiber products mean that companies have to mow down forests at incredible rates that would astonish most people if they understood. While highly positive that they replant forests, they fail to do so in a staggered way to produce a variegated canopy so that the forest can create functional ecosystems for wild animals, fungi, beneficial bacteria & many other friendly parts of nature on the forest floor.

Old Growth Forest Function Best

It takes 300-1200 years of forest growth for old growth forest to become biologically high functioning as ecosystem service providers good for water quality, air quality, ecosystem health, environmental health, especially soil health & health soil production essential for agriculture, permaculture, organic farming, plants important for food production, essential medicinal substance production & ecosystem services like bee's who pollinate & make delicious honey & other amazing bee products good for human health, treasure since antiquity when pre-modern people living in forest, similar to the way some indigenous tribes continue to operate in rural forest in South America today as of 2023.

Consider Economic Value of Wood

Furniture, boats, buildings, even early aircraft were made of wood & waxed canvas incredibly! Real solid wood furniture, high quality dense resinous woods are disease & rot resistant, including bamboo, & my personal favorite cedar & eucalyptus :) I am big fan of rock wood & iron wood & other very hard very strong wood with exceptional mechanical strength, very dense structure, very high resin content, water resistant & rot resistant & insect resistant, making ceremonial grade wood products that last generations indoors & even centuries outside, like those amazing all wood buildings in Japan without any nails or screws or metal, that shrink & swell uniformly as a system that weathers lovely like high quality dark tan full grain leather, or copper patina :)

I Think Like An Industrialist Sold On Eco-Friendly Changes

I really like slate roofing too. I like long life long lasting stuff thats well made, durable, enduring & very high quality, ultra premium made with the best materials, exceptional goods, not cheap crap mass made in China. I am talking about expensive material goods that are inner generational investments passed down in families for millennia. I happen to like gold, titanium, rhodium, platinum, graphene, carbon fiber, hard woods, aluminum, copper, high strength steel, tungsten, uranium, osmium, zirconia ceramics, catalytic converters, high technology, rare earths, magnets, internet & a range of other technology, especially electric motors, induction motors, more generators, axial flux motors, fans, pumps, microwaves, fridges, cooling, air conditioning, heating, lighting & all sorts of toxic industrial products like HID lights, LED, solar PV modules, wind turbines, electric & hybrid & plug in hybrid vehicles, cars, motorcycles, motorscooters, battery electric kick scooters, Segway & other self balancing Ninebot personal mobility vehicles, especially bicycles *in a big way* // I really like mobility & energy! I was a late bloomer for environmental ethics & to understand why overdevelopment & overpopulation are global existential problems like runaway climate change, worldwide nuclear war, pathogenic viral outbreaks & similar CME events & solar storms from the Sun

We need more carpet & fashion recycling. We need to phase out carbon combustion. We need to stop polluting the biosphere & start protecting ecosystems from human fallout. We need to do a lot better job of taking care of our children & making choices that are good for their children too, with long term planning & long term focus, sustainable intergenerational thinking, especially about how to live outside of the Earth, on space stations, to access & develop other plants, space based mining, moving toxic industrial processes to lower earth orbit or the moon. We need to capture & deorbit & stop making space trash with intelligent reusable rocket launches & using heat resistant super ceramic surfaces to travel at relativistic speeds with fusion powered electric thrust spacecraft, not puny fuel paradox chemical rockets symbolic of the finite depleting petrochemical era coal power 1900 thinking.

We need to think 2100 & 2200, to the future & start doing things right now to stop polluting the biosphere of Earth, especially because toxic pollutants are bad for public health & cause preventable diseases that raise the costs of healthcare for everyone, at everyones expense - I am talking about pain & suffering caused by greedy elite income earners embracing carbon fuel profits, nursing home profits, other scams & crime, corruption & inequality increasing, especially currency manipulation of inflation prone manmade FIAT currencies that rob people by making everything, especially food, housing, & energy more expensive for everyone. Look at what happen in Venezuela when the power grid failed for a prolonged period. Thats a preview of what will happen in the future if we do not radically increase micro reactor manufacturing right now, radically increase rooftop solar PV deployment, radically increase energy storage & grid power system upgrades to bury the power lines in large polymer rust resistance long- life flexible conduit tubes or non-corroding metal tubes or mixed material tubes that last thousands of years, like silicon or composite pipes.

We need to remove the power lines from under tree branches & put the lines in conduit tubes in the ground & start thinking about ground water with marine electrical waterproofing ideas applied liberally to make the power grid resilient, especially adding shielding & EMP resistance & tamper resistance, upgrading substations with lethal protection & ceramic armor & armed patrols & facial ID & vehicle tag reading cameras & other crime reduction smart technology. We need to upgrade everything with long term stability planning, thinking about intergenerational durability, endurance, legacy & making long life eco-friendly products that are easy to repair, that hold up well in real world use, that are intrinsically water resistant, durable & strong!

Psychedelic or Mind Manifesting

Opening the critical windows of the mind & brain development to help adults with PTSD, major depression, serious anxiety problems, alcoholism, opioid dependance or other destructive obsessive personality disorders like obsessive compulsive shopping or gambling or other kinds of addressable mental illness.

Linguistic Incoherent Inconsistency

Multiple ways to write the same sounds, homonyms, synonyms, slang, gender of how verbs are conjugated as if words of things had a gender. English so rife with irregular special rules & strange silent letters & strange phrases that do not make sense that there is a YouTube video called "English is a Giant Meme" to make fun of it!
