We are exploiting ancient sunlight with gasoline & diesel, which is made of plants & animals that died millions of years ago, that under heat & pressure, as the surface of the biosphere turns over, volcanic eruptions, asteroid impacts, tectonic plates colliding or separating, eventually everything living on the top gets shoved down under rock towards hot core of earth, cooked under heat and pressure for thousands of years old dead lifeforms becomes a dark brown goo called crude oil.
You should be kissing the oil industries feet for gasoline at under $15 per gallon. When Americans bitch & moan about $5/gal or so, they are so confused, and have no or zero idea what it took to make that fuel, or how much chemical energy it contains or how much work that fuel does in their vehicle engine to move them and thousands of pounds of metal, glass and plastic around roadways made of asphalt which it made of bitumen or tar mixed with rocks, a hybrid of petroleum waste & mineral laid down into hard surfaces to drive on, while concrete not made of oil, huge amounts of natural gas are burned to cook ingredients for concrete and all the machines that lay down concrete roads are powered by diesel fuel.
