If we factor in the annual cost of both phones & DATA about $1.71 per day, or rounding up $2 per day to have very well-made Apple Smartphones, plus iPhone 16 Plus assembled in India not China :)
Being very careful she never broke the iPhone 12 mini screen, dent or scratch the case, but the OEM battery of iPhone 12 mini now in June 2025 only about 50% of its original run time per charge or very weak, & with a smaller screen & software updates it was starting to perform slower & getting harder to read because of age related eye issues, and she used the iPhone with Apple Watch Series 9 & Dexcom G7 to track her blood glucose to manage Type 1 diabetes more carefully to prevent eye damage from high blood sugars & to keep from experiencing dangerous low blood sugar events that make thinking challenging similar to being very drunk in the sense that blood sugar lower than 50 can be very disorienting, so since getting the Dexcom CGM she has much better control of her blood glucose levels & was even able to do a modified broth based + water only fast for 21 days without few complications.
If we consider the larger screen of 16 Plus, ongoing software updates, faster performance, better battery life, & essential use as the interface for G7 CGM functions, then a new iPhone every 4 or 5 years makes perfect rational sense.

I am currently using iPhone 14 & Series 8 Apple Watch + RingConn Smart Ring & Apple Health over high speed Wi-Fi at home or 4G LTE or 5G wireless cellar data via Mint Mobile plan also, & figure a similar $2 per day or net cost of about $800 per year all said, since I wait 4 gens to upgrade smartphone, such that my next one God willing will be iPhone 18 in a couple years.
No more lightning connector, the iPhone 14 will be the last one with lightning, iPhone 18 will come with USB-C just like her new iPhone 16 Plus. The technical specifications of these phones be that iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 14 or iPhone 16 Plus over on GSM Arena website are nothing short of modern marvels, effectively like putting a computer + digital camera + medical tracking device or health tracking interface, email, browsing, online shopping, publishing movies to YouTube directly, editing videos, picture texts or video texts, voice, data, navigation, routing, they combine the functions of more than 60 different devices into a CNC machined aluminum rounded rectangular shape with fun anodized colors & matching glass on back with screen OLED glass action for touch interface, the killer app of the smartphone UI the multi-touch, something that gives tablet computers an edge for content consumption, while the physical keyboard on a laptop for power users & for typing up blogs or other kinds of online publications the way I am writing this post on an Acer Aspire from 2014 that still works plugged into its power adapter cable, the 3 cell 18650 battery modules barely works for a few minutes as a short duration UPS to save files before a power outage causes a total loss of work.
