N20 Nitrous Oxide (Deep Dive)

N20 chargers littered (trash in public)/ car park London
via Wikipedia on Nitrous Oxide
Getting high, oxidizing fuels in rockets & motors & helping patients in dentistry & medicine, it also powers whip cream dispensers & acts as potent green house gas if released into Earth's atmosphere, Nitrous Oxide //

I was watching one of my favorite YouTube channels, Project Farm, & the host added a nitrous kit to his 4 stroke motorized bicycle engine <-- click link to watch; which increased the top speed in a headwind to 41 mph from a non-nitrous boosted top speed of about 37 with a tailwind - a statistically significant performance increase from shooting nitrous oxide cartridge bursts into the carburetor of this small displacement 4-stroke single cylinder gasoline fueled reciprocating piston engine.

N2O first synthesized 1772 by heating iron filling dampened with nitric acid in experiments created by Joseph Priestly during his inquiry into phlogiston theory of air. N2O also known as Laughing Gas, it became popular with the British upper class starting in 1799. N2O also utilized as an oxidizer in rocketry that's more powerful than O2 or oxygen & very low toxicity compared to other common rocketry oxidizers.

Typical Automotive Nitrous Fogger Kit

Today N2O shots are used to boost engine power output in motorsports often via a boost button that opens a N2O tank valve that discharges a shot of nitrous into the intake manifold or carburetor, where the expanding N2O gas cools the incoming charge air, resulting in a more dense fuel air mix able that produces more energy during the power stroke enhancing engine power output.

N2O supports combustion by releasing the dipolar bonded oxygen radical that readily reacts with flammable fuels to form mostly carbon dioxide & water & N2 emission gasses + a tiny trace of pollutants typical of fossil fueled engines common in cars & motorcycles & trucks & busses & other piston engine powered vehicles operated 24/7 worldwide by the billion today.

A dental patient breathing N2O/O2 mix "Happy"

N2O commonly used as anesthetic & analgesic in dentistry & medicine today, a practice that started in 1844 with dentist Horace Well's et. al. who with colleagues noted patients were insensitive to pain during other painful dental procedures if they were breathing a mix of N2O & O2 / N2O a colorless, non-toxic gas with a faint "sweet" odor /

Caution to dentists & people working in dental offices where N2O being dispensed to patients. The N2) gas flowing into the patient often exhaled without absorption where N2O levels in the room will gradually increase, an occupational hazard to the employees who have to work in this environment for 8 + hours per day. Make sure to have a forced air system that exchange room air with filtered clean air to prevent N2O from building up. Chronic exposure to N2O at sub therapeutic concentrations similar to second hand smoke, probably & likely not healthy or good for health & possibly dangerous or toxic over time. Remember the science of how N2O interacts with the body & brain still not full known & awaits/ warrants further research & inquiry.

Interacting with the human bodies opioid receptors, N2O also initiates norepinephrine release into the spinal column where pain signal blocking also accomplished. N2O also potentiates GABA-a receptors while stimulating the dopamine reward pathway by releasing dopamine release & by activating dopaminergic neurons in the VTA & nucleus accumbent, possibly by antagonization of localized NMDA receptors.  These mechanism explain the analgesic properties & euphoric effects sought after by recreational users of nitrous oxide gas.

Pharmacology of N2O not full elucidated in medicine yet, though a broad range of ligand gates ion channels are affected by nitrous oxide; blocking NMDAR & beta 2 nACh channels, inhibiting AMPA + kainite + GABA c + 5-HT3 + potentiating GABA a & glycine receptor + activating two-pore-domain K+ channels. Its major euphoric effects from inhibition of NMDA receptor mediate currents. Theorized that N2O may mimic NO or nitric oxide. N20 30-40x more soluble in body fluids & tissues than N2.

Recreational hits may produce intoxication, euphoria or dysphoria, spatial disorientation, temporal disorientation & reduced pain sensitivity. Some people experience uncontrolled vocalizations and muscles spasms that rapidly disappear within minutes of removing nitrous oxide source. People inhale N2O recreationally to get high, owing unto the dopamine, norepinephrine, pain blocking effects long utilized in Dentistry as a mild analgesic for less invasive procedures, but also with other anesthetic agents for local or general anesthetic applications in dental surgeries.

Pro Whipped Cream Dispenser Meg & I Utilize

In reusable professional whip cream dispensers N2O used because it does not foul or sour the whip cream mix as CO2 would & N2O propellent produces a nice firm whipped cream that holds well without affecting the flavor! This kind of kit can reduce metal can waste from the single use dispensers & enables users to make sugar free ketogenic friendly whipped cream by using xylitol or other non-sugar or low glycemic index sweeteners that produce less blood sugar spiking than sucrose or real sugar or HFCS high fructose corn syrup (puke) or glucose or dextrose or invert sugar or one any of the other 60+ names of sugar in the ingredients list of processed foods common in the SAD or standard American diet // Think junk food // this kind of kit offers end users more options for their whipped cream & even the possibility of a "empty puff" euphoria hunter experience // no suggestions to misuse your professional kitchen gadget inappropriately.

N20 or Nitro Beer Style // alternative to CO2

Nitro dispensed beers have a different head, different mouth feel & different flavor profile because of the lack of CO2 or acidic carbonic acid that would otherwise be present in carbonated beer the vastly more popular type typical of most beer styles. If you look at a pint glass filled with Nitro Beer the bubbles are different & the beer looks different & its really neat to observe & even better to enjoy, Cheers!

Global N2O Budget / Nitrogen Cycle / Earth

N2O also part of Earth's nitrogen cycle & has been increasing in atmospheric concentration because of pollution from carbon fuel combustion NOX emissions & because of deforestation & ocean acidification & other environmental degradation, fallout & ecosystem imbalances created by excessive human development & population increases combined with materialistic lifestyles that are resource intensive & toxic to the biosphere of Earth in plausibly indirect & easily deniable ways that give rise to ignorant debates about if human civilization sustainable or about how much harm mankind actually causes nature with human activity in the biosphere of Earth.
