Citizen Promaster Marine Automatic Green Dial Men's Watch NY0040-09W Purchased Feb 10, 2024 $228.90

Watch my personal YouTube video about this one https://youtu.be/UKJilV0fCGM?si=-ho4rI_riB2dNOoG

The FUGU versions are $549 from Citizen on their website with metal link bands, but on sale for $446 for the Lunar Holiday Sale. I found this 2016 launch year model with the cheaper rubber strap for $207 on Amazon, though the listing surprisingly sparse with information. No exhibition glass back & mineral crystal not sapphire unlike the more expensive newer versions.

Got it today Tuesday Feb 14th, 2024, at 12:34pm :) Glad its a 2023 model (Checked # on the case online) Got the updated Miyota 8204 with hacking & hand winding :) Love the dial color more green than yellow, well light yellow green. You're also paying a little more for a little less to get the Citizen Automatic for its "Japanese" quality excellence & reputation focus, perhaps like buying a Toyota or Lexus, which are renowned worldwide for having legendary reliability as automobiles.

In 1987 Jame Bond The Living Daylights with actor Timothy Dalton, was wearing the TAG Heuer Professional 980031 which can be seen in the following image extract from YouTube video https://youtu.be/dpQVp7_LKEs?si=wW6ch3ZMcTniuLvQ 9:41 through 10:26

Not Identical, but this TAG & the Citizen have
remarkably similar full lume dials with blacked
out dots at 1,2,4,5,7,8,10, & 11 hour positions

My other Citizen watches are Eco-Drive with Panasonic Lithium Titanate batteries that have solar PV under the dial that collects ambient light to keep the battery charged which in turn powered the quartz drive, though perplexingly they don't use jeweled movements, I know because I have used my watch tools to open the cases to look inside & to laser engrave my name & other information on the inside of the screw down steel case back.

If I change a battery I use a fine pen on a small piece of paper, & write the data of the battery change then tape that down with a small piece of office tape to the inside of the case back removed to change the battery, that way when I go to change it again, I can get an idea of how long the battery lasted. I recently changed the MT820 battery in the H500 Titanium Chronograph Citizen Eco-Drive movement after the originally battery works for about 12 years.

My favorite color lime neon green, yellow green, light neon green, pale yellow green, bright green. I love bright vivid colors with more hue depth, more vivid brightness, especially bright metallic sunburst orange, bright vivid yellow or bright neon green. That makes the dial of this watch all the more beautiful.

This "light green dial" version a variation or play on the design of the "white" dial version 1989 issued to the Italian Navy. Full Luminous dial an interesting feature that is starting to become a trend in the watch industry, which never died because of the quartz crisis, since people appreciate the artistic craftsmanship quality control and effort required to make quality mechanical movements. Using a watch timer it's possible to tune the 8204 Miyota in this unit from its OEM accuracy rating of -20 to + 40 seconds per day to + or - 7 seconds.

The third part seller "Watchsavings" does not include the original yellow plastic air tank case that shipped with this model new as the product package. Who cares, it's not a real scuba air tank anyway, made of  plastic & chrome plated mild steel hardware that easily damaged according to people selling the case on EBAY. The third party NY based watch seller on Amazon puts it on a nice little watch pillow inside a nice watch box per the reviews noting such on Amazon.com, and even gives Citizen watches a 5 year warranty.

There is no ad sense on my blog anymore, and these are not product endorsements or paid links, just what I am doing in real life, what I like & buy & why, what I pay, my kit, my methods, my thoughts, opinions, its a blog inspired by TED. To this end I am not encouraging others to become a watch collector like me since it is kinda superfluous or vain in a way.

See this video, it's not a perfect product. Still a classic 9/10 overall for what you are getting! Great product value for the money of around $220 / https://youtu.be/vFUpyAmyS-s?si=DvxNjuf82Lxlnn8F

Given ISO 6425 certification, the price amazing, as many "dive" watch that cost thousands more are not even real dive watches meeting that certification standard set by ISO. Crown setting at 8 o'clock means you can wear it on your right wrist & still have full wrist movement. Citizen discontinued this line, so I snapped one up while I still could, even though the Amazon listing so sparse.

I normally will not buy anything on Amazon unless the listing contains way more detail, but made an exception for this one after surfing thousands of other diver watch options that are way more expensive, including on Citizens website USA & Japan versions using Google Translate.

After further review of the heavy thick stiff rubber band setup that ships with this for actual scuba use, I opted as per recommendation of a reviewer to get a SINAIKE 20mm Silver Brushed Wristband Solid 316L Stainless Steel Watch Band with Deployment Lock Buckle for only $20.91 all said amazingly.

Crafted from premium 316L stainless steel with exquisite craftsmanship; Corrosion resistant; Feels solid, sturdy & comfortable on your wrist. Adopts double push button buckles & security folding clasp, firmly closed also quick to take off. Brushed matte finish, satin texture elegant looking. Band length adjustable with included tools to resize the watch band by link remover tool provided, adjust the length to fit wrists of 5.5-8.27 inches (140-210mm) in circumference, that is also easy to Install with the includes spring bars and tools to make the install quick and easy. Package Contains 1x Stainless Steel Metal Watch Bracelet, 1x Link Removal Tool, 1x Spring Bar Remover/ Repair Tool, 4x Spring Bars (2 are required, 2 as spare) all for just shy of $21 with tax & shipping via Amazon.com amazingly!

With the aftermarket metal band the watch + mental band weighs or has a mass of 152.3 grams.

There were others steel watch bands available for $50 to $80, but they did not seem to make sense. I am always look for a reasonable price as a value oriented shopper & already have to pay Amazon a lot annually for the prime subscription, so paying less for the stuff I buy part of that equation. I think of my life a bit like a business & have been collecting wristwatches on & off since I was a teenager.

I am glad that I do not have them all, since most were cheap quarts watches at first. I didn't get into automatics until I was browsing overstock.com in 2006 and found my first Seiko 5 with white dial & 7S26 movement that cannot be hand wound. I pick it up & shake it around gentle until the second hand starts sweeping, for a few minutes, then set the time, day, date, then wear it & as long as I wear it it seems to keep working for a day or so after I take it off. I rotate between which watches I wear daily for variety or to suit my mood, one of the benefits of having multiples of something like a wrist watch, a 1st world privilege indeed, probably emblematic of wasteful excess. Then again I see what the government spends on the military & don't feel one bit guilty for buying a sub $300 wrist watch every few years or so.

It will be automatics for the remainder of my time alive, since I love their little beating heavy pallet fork spring oscillating escapement regulating system & spring energy storage with mechanical energy recovery via the swinging ball bearing automatic winding mass that undulating around the spindle in response to the wearers arm movements, translating their bodies muscle energy into mechanical energy to wind the automatic movement.

A jeweled quartz watch with larger battery can run for up to 7 years spinning its hands, some digital watches can run for 10 years or more using an even bigger CR2032 or even longer in power save modes with BR2032 low drain batteries. From QUORA we read "Modern quartz watches use brushless Lavet stepper motors to run the hands through a geartrain and semiconductors to control the movement. There is very little wear in running these watches, and Swatches from 40 years ago are still running. Older quartz watches with LCDs can get display bleed after about a decade but are otherwise just as immortal. There are still red LED quartz watches from the 1970s on the road today."

This next section on the Miyota/ Citizen 8204 scraped or manually copied from the linked website including comments on this page where users not some interesting information from around the world as these are very popular watches / https://calibercorner.com/miyota-caliber-8204/

Automatic, self-winding mechanical
21,600 bph ~42 hours Power Reserve
Rotor Winding Direction Counterclockwise (uni-directional)
Hand Winding Clockwise (forward)
Parashock +  Contains Plastic Parts
Features Hacking (second hand stops while setting time, for precise time setting): Citizen officially refers to this as a second hand stop function.

The Miyota caliber 8204 (8204A) is a 21 jewel automatic movement, first introduced in 1977 (other versions as early as 1974). This movement is from the Miyota 8200 family (aka 8 or 82 series) of movements. This 8204 has either been discontinued by Miyota, and is no longer offered in their catalog of movements – or it is a Citizen-only movement not available for wholesale to parts sellers or watch brands.

  • You can hand wind the movement while the crown is in position 0.
  • Pull the crown out one click to position 1 to set the calendar. Turn the crown clockwise to advance the day of the week. Rotate the crown counterclockwise to advance the date.
  • Pull the crown out again (position 2) to set the time.
  • Do not set the date while the time is between 9:00pm and 4:00am.
  • Although the 8204 has a quickset date, this does not mean the date instantly flips over at midnight. In fact, the changeover is not instantaneous, so do not be alarmed if you see a partial date when the hands are before or after 12:00AM
  • According to Citizen, the claimed accuracy rating of the caliber 8204 has an average daily difference of -20 to +40 seconds/day
  • The movement says the truth. Not the dial. Not the caseback. Check the movement!
  • Citizen tends to use parts in its Promaster “fugu” series until they run out so it’s not uncommon to find one with brighter hands than the dial. All of them have a green pip on the bezel regardless of the lume color used on hands or dial and in recent years the pip is noticeably brighter and longer lasting than on the hands or dial.
  • 8204 can be regulated/calibrated to be more accurate time keeping to about -7s/day. The mechanism is very touchy, so it will probably take many tries and many misses to get it where you want it. Another issue that makes it difficult is that I use a phone app to measure the beat rate and for some reason it has a very difficult time in picking up the sounds of my NY-0086 movement. So, I just make a slight regulation and wear it for a couple days to see how it runs. And repeat.
