Many upstanding honest people who do not abuse drugs or alcohol hit up the pantry or fridge to cope with life's stresses or for "enjoyment" & who can fault someone for wanting ice-cream, a nearly universally appreciated or liked cold creamy tasty dessert. Ice cream or gelato a variation of it, popular around the world. In 1 or 2 servings sparingly consumed a few tens of times per year, this is probably relatively metabolically safe. But when something akin to ice-cream or soda pop consumed daily by inactive adults, it tends to favor the formation of pre-diabetes or if maintained for many years it can develop into obesity, insulin resistance, neuropathy or loss of feeling in the fingers & toes as fine capillaries are damaged by high blood sugars, or worse kidney failure & blindness from retinal damage or unhealing foot ulcers that result in mobility robbing amputations. 

Nutritional abuse common in wealthy industrialized countries or where western ultra processed foods in bags & boxes comprise much of diet

Sedentary or sitting around all the time lifestyle multiplies the damage of eating a highly refined ultra processed UPF heavy western industrial diet with more than 10,000 different food additives, many of which are synthetic analogs of prescription drugs added to make addictive

Sugary beverages are the worst, especially those with excess fructose. Fructose by itself in excess can only be processed by the Liver. Sucrose is half glucose which can be used by almost every cell in the body. Fructose a liver toxin like excess ethanol or alcohol, very similar

In a similar tone, food abuse gives rise to pre-diabetes or Type 3 diabetes at first, then if continued with too many added sugars, starches & carbs, it becomes obesity insulin resistance Type 2 diabetes, kidney & retinal damages, destruction of capillaries unto neuropathy & more

Sugars & Ethanol or Alcohol similar, especially fructose. In a dose dependent way, they damage the human liver cells & cause a variety of other health degrading damage to the body. As more servings are consumed the damage increases. Time, Dose, Body Water Content, Activity Level, there are many factors that influence how sugars & alcohol damage health. 

The precautionary principle applied to diet means as an adult its probably wise to investigate IF or intermittent fasting, long duration water-only fasting, & how western industrial ultra processed foods are unhealthy, or what real traditional diets are composed of, namely whole natural organic fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, meat, dairy, fish, chicken, botanical, biologic, organic, something that has been part of human diet, like olive oil or butter or lard, for thousands of years before industrial chemistry applied to processed foods sold in bags and boxes typically.
