Toyota FT-BH

Toyota FT-BH Concept : Interior
Future Toyota B-segment Hybrid or FT-BH, a compact ultralight clean technology concept car from Toyota with fresh industrial design improvements sadly missing from almost all but the most exotic vehicle options today. Check out the video in the hyperlink^^

Think Prius-C optimized for almost 900 LBS weight reduction, super ultra low aerodynamic losses 0.235 CD , exceptional energy efficiency @ 112mpg, low emissions of less than 50grams CO2 per KM & a futuristic design concept.

The FT-BH was first shown at the 2011 Geneva Switzerland Auto Show, a famous place for automakers to show off their freshest ideas.

Meg & I were watching youtube videos about emergent personal transportation technologies, small all electric "last mile" devices optimized for use cases in large dense urban areas, ridable electric vehicles like my self balancing Segway Mini Pro, the Boosted Boards that Casey Neistat rides, or the Rhino motorcycle.

I was doing more research on compact electric personal transportation technology when I ran across an image of the inside of the FT-BH. The dashboard reminds me of the inside of a BMW i3, while the digital camera side view mirror replacements remind me of the VW XL1. I was watching videos about Human Pedal Electric Enclosed Bicycles when I was reminded of the Toyota iRoad concept. Performing a new base search about iRoad alternatives landed results displaying the FT-BH. Think of a compact space optimized, lighter, cooler Prius C and you are on the right path to envisioning the ideas behind the design of the FT-BH.

Car Sharing Future of Smaller Self Driving Cars

Automakers know that future generations are not going to be interested in larger vehicles. There is an emergent cultural trend among millenials where they do not want large, expensive, or complex polluting vehicles. Many millenials do not even want to buy a car, they instead claim to want to be part of car sharing networks, where you pay a monthly subscription fee to have access to a fleet of self driving electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles that can drive themselves to and from customers. Something like $75 a month for a low cost vehicle access subscription to sub $20,000 models like the FT-BH. You will be able to access luxury cars, performance cars and other exotics for greater month expenses, probably price tiering in the $75-800 per month range, or something for everyone. The cool think about cars as a subscription is that you always have access to the latest and greatest vehicles, you never have to think about tires, brakes, fuel, or anything else. You just pick up your smart phone, reserve a ride and the car will come pick you up, like an automated cheap alternative to take a taxi, uber or lyft. Maven is a car sharing program being developed by GM aimed at addressing these emergent customer markets.

Your customers are changing because of information technology. Look at the way that newspaper subscription have decline, or the way that cable TV subscriptions are fading away. People use internet to gain access to news stories they once read in magazines, in newspapers and in other printed content formats. The Economist published a fascinating article about the future of books they show how digital books are already displacing the sales of printed books, a trend that Amazon got started with the Kindle line. Blockbuster video ultimately died because of Streaming on Hulu & Netflix and their failure to adapt to the changing market space enabled by broadband internet. Blockbuster could have become the king of video streaming service and mail order disc rentals, but they failed to innovate their business model and gradually lost customers because of the cultural changes accompanies content streaming services like Pandora. I do not buy music anymore, I subscribe to Pandora. I sometimes pay to digitally rent a newer movie like Passengers recently, and Meg would like to rent Gardians of the Galaxy so that we can watch it together before watching the sequel.

FT-BH Energy Optimization

A lithium ion battery storage about 750 watt hours of energy, the computer controlled BMS keeps the state of charge between 30 & 80 % to enhance the life of the energy storage system battery pack.

During many driving states the 2 cylinder atkinson cycle long stroke VVTI engine turns off, while the hybrid motor generator captures energy from coasting, 1 pedal driving, letting off the accelerator, depressing the brake pedal, anytime you are coasting or slowing down the system is capturing energy with the engine turned off.

Well Proven Hybrid Technology

This hybrid drive system of turning off the engine and capturing energy with the Hybrid Battery already extensively proven in more than 9 million durable enduring Toyota Hybrids on the roads today. The net result is ~112 MPG and less than 75grams of CO2 per mile! Thats better fuel economy than my Honda PCX-150 scooter^^
