On farms a lot of soils have been damaged because they stopped doing crop rotations & never give the soil a break to recover, or plant nitrogen fixing crops to restore nutrients, or use mushrooms to break down compost into healthy soil, or spread food waste that turned into compost with mushrooms & bacteria in large compost piles, berms of compost covered with tarps to keep them hot & stinky :)
Many of these farms are owed my large agrochemical companies like Monsanto & are grown GMO soy or corn used to make fuel ethanol blended later into Gasoline sold widely at gas stations numbering in the million all around America where more than 370 million gallons of gasoline are sold daily. With 33.7 kWh per gallon, that's 12,469,000,000 kWh of fuel energy daily, or 4,552,185,000,000 kWh annual. That would required the production billions of tons of 100kWh EV batteries like that in the Tesla Model S P100D in order to replace all the gasoline vehicles with long range high performance electric vehicles.
I don't like ethanol blended in gasoline because it reduces the energy content of E10 by around 5% & E10 fuel with ethanol attracts water vapor into gas tanks where it can cause rust, and ethanol itself corrodes engine fuel system gaskets in the fuel pump, fuel injectors & engine that were never designed to use ethanol as fuel. This extremely problematic in small engines like that of our pressure washer, backup generator, weed whacker or similar 4 stroke carburetor engines. Farming equipment, those machines used to product & cultivate crops for food production use diesel fuel & lots of diesel fuel used by heavy class 8 shipping trucks that move shipping containers full of goods all around America. A fuel similar to diesel used by passenger aircraft called JET-A very common for airlines to energize or refuel their planes. Many ships, tug boats, marine vessels & watercraft use diesel engines called marine diesel engines for propulsion & often to generate hot water for domestic, cleaning & sanitation use onboard the vessel, or for electrical power generation to energize loads on the vessel, like lighting & electronics, heaters, heat pumps, microwave ovens, HVAC, pumps, navigation, radios, sonar, radar & many other kinds of marine electronics. Most dump trucks, many larger landscaping trucks, many commercial trucks, many utility trucks, many motorhomes & many other RV's use diesel fuel. While biodiesel can work, biodiesel blends with 20% biodiesel mixed into petrochemical diesel are more widely available and mixing cetane additives into such fuels increases their compatibility with vehicles never designed to work with biodiesel.
Other than energizing farm vehicles with diesel, most farms spray pesticides made from crude oil or petrochemical pesticides, petrochemical fertilizers, and the lubricating oils used in these machines are made from oil, from fossil fuel precursor chemicals from black gold, from crude oil, thinks petroleum thick black & gooey like liquid coal, though heavy bunker oil burned in gigantic 2 stoke turbo diesel ship engines on large marine vessels like container ships more similar to liquid coal in terms of nasty emissions full of toxic air acid rain causing climate change accelerating fumes, soot, oxides & particulate matter.
I call this kind of diesel engine mechanized with petrochemical pesticides & fertilized, highly industrialized mono crops like GMO soy grown by itself over 100,000 acres owned by a large corporation, such that family farms increasingly less common over time in America as many have been sold off to large corporations.
While idllici farm house imagery found on butter packages & other dairy products, most cows are grown & kept in concentrated animal feed lots & fed corn & grain that makes the cows sick with preventable diseases because cows were designed to eat grass & weeds in a field, not corn or grain, and then the people who manage these cows have to give the sick cows synthetic pharmaceutical veterinary medicine drugs to treat diseases, just as many Americans have to take metformin or insulin from abusing carbohydrates, starches & sugars in the SAD or standard American diet of sugary heavily processed cereals eaten with conventional milk from cows treated with recombined bovine growth hormone to increases milk output, even though the use of these hormones on dairy downs increases rates of utter infections & painful infections with puss & blood that gets into the milk that then must be pasteurized by super heating it to kill off the microbes that enter because the sick cow is sick from being treated with RBGH, and the milk produced is not the same as that produced by grass eating pasture raised cows not treated with strange synthetic for profit hormone manipulation that harms the cow & reduces the quality of the milk by introducing questionable chemicals in the milk that probably have hormone disrupting effects on people that drink or consume conventional milk from cows treated with RBGH.
Many rainforest are cut down, slashed with machetes & burned down to install a cattle farm, as cattle farming for beed & dairy production has increased in the Amazonian rainforest to fuel human industrial city populations where beef consumption the greatest. Most of the eco-toxic agricultural developments in the world, including the vectoring of agriculture pests usually out of China to the rest of the world because of the scale of human activity & because there are almost 9 billion people alive at the same time who all have to have something to eat to live, the sleep is more important than eating given that a person can live for 40 days without food but will die without sleeping for 4 days by comparison. In this way sleep more important than overeating & eating cannot replace sleep.
People only use fossil fuels because it provides a high quality pure reliable power in engines. This almost like an energetic magic trick that so appealing, no amount of draconian government restrictions will be effective at keeping people or companies from burning fossil fuels for at least the next 100 years. Sure, we are going to make lots of electric vehicles of all kinds, including electric scooters, E-bikes, electric motorcycles, electric cars, electric SUV, electric trucks, electric buses, electric ships, electric aircraft, electric mining vehicle, electric commercial & utility vehicles, electric RV's, electric motorhomes & battery electric version of nearly every other kind of vehicle, but those premium battery electric new vehicles only sell well in high income locals where people actually have money to buy new emerging technology, and that's not everyone in the world, that's only 20% of the worlds people today. What about the other 80% who have to buy used fossil fueled vehicles for the next 100 years?
We can't phase out carbon combustion from transpiration instantly, there are not enough lithium ion batteries made to even enable that to happen. There is not enough easily recoverable lithium near the surface of the crust of the biosphere of Earth to make EV batteries for 10 billion battery electric cars. This is why Sodium Ion or Na-Ion batteries are becoming super important for scaling EV production, even though they are 30% less energy dense than typical NMC batteries used by Tesla for example in their electric vehicle models, the fact that Sodium is 500X more abundant & 500x cheaper than lithium means that Na-Ion batteries are going to make their way into all sorts of portable electronics, not just electric vehicles.
It's cheaper not to destroy an ecosystem, than to do artificial ecological restoration, especially in labor markets where human labor expensive, in most industrialized nations like America or German for example. Feasibility & profitability drive mass market adoption. Whatever is cheaper & good enough tends to sell well, that's why coal power plants & natural gas peak-er power plants are more common than nuclear fission reactors, even though the fission reactor 30 year ROI 9000% or better, its having money tied up for 20 years without turning a profit that makes premium nuclear reactors the domain of government financing & why 95% of all the operating nuclear fission reactors making electrical power for grid power systems & utility customer end use loads, were paid for by government funding, not private capital.
Investors do not have billions of private equity tied up in a project that has no pay outs for 2 decades, Many of the people with the most money are over 50 years old & if they invest large amounts into a project with no pay back for 20 years, some of them will die before they ever see a return. That's why people do not tend to privately fund nuclear reactors. There are small test reactors, research reactors, specialty medical isotopes making reactors, nuclear materials research reactors & similar that were paid for by colleges, universities, grants, private equity & billionaire angel investors in a few instances.
It's market forces that cause fossil fuels to sell better than batteries worldwide. The market for transportation fuels much larger than the battery market. With fossil fuels we are talking about trillions per year, not dozens of billions, the scale much smaller for the battery market even though the battery market been growing 15% year over year for decades, its hard to compete with global worldwide fossil fuel production at refineries using oil mined around the world, often by state enterprises like in Norway where the Norwegian Government owns the oil industry & takes profits from exporting oil to the rest of the world to important & inject cash into the average Norwegian citizen & the Norwegian economy, thus most housing & goods in Norway are expensive, since this created a largely upper middle income population with very high living standards. Qatar & its citizens have slightly more wealth per capita as a counter example, with a much smaller population & similar profits from exporting mined crude oil worldwide!
In Brazil sugarcane ethanol has a much better energetic return on investment making ethanol as a gasoline replacement fuel. Many gas stations in Brazil sell 100% ethanol, blends of gasoline and ethanol like E85 or straight Gasoline without ethanol. The Ethanol much cheaper, about 50% less expensive than gasoline & most of the vehicles sold in Brazil have flex-fuel, two fuel tanks, can operate on gasoline or ethanol or any combination thereof, some that can automatically blend or switch, other have a valve on the dashboard. When interviewed, many car drivers in Brazil said they prefer the ethanol or Gasohol because it's $1/ gallon while gasoline over $2/ per gallon or twice as expensive, even though the cars get lower fuel economy when burning pure ethanol fuel, since ethanol has less energy than gasoline. Since 1976 government laws in Brazil make it mandator to blend anhydrous ethanol with gasoline between 10-22% by volume, which only requires a minor adjustment to the regular gasoline engine. Gasoline engines & fuel systems designed to use ethanol have to have gaskets compatible with ethanol in the fuel pump & fuel injectors & tunes & hoses in the fuel lines that are not harmed by ethanol.
This is why common Pre-2008 model year passenger cars in the USA were never deigned to use E10 or the most common fuel sold in America. Thus E10 can damage the fuel pump, fuel lines or hoses & injector gaskets in older vehicles. Most small carburetor engines & fuel tank & hoses can be damaged by ethanol or rather the water that ethanol attracts as a hygroscope chemical, such that ethanol sucks water out of the air, and in poorly sealed fuel systems like those on typical backup generators fueled by gasoline, E10 fuel fouls or goes bad faster while attracting water that rusts out the tank & carb bowl faster. Add fuel stabilizer to your E10 or even better add fuel stabilizer to ethanol free or E0 gasoline, that can extend the shelf life from 2 months before fouling of the fuel starts to around 2 years or makes the E10 or E10 have 10X better shelf life. Old fouled gasoline will have white waxy threads floating in it that can jam carb jets or fuel injectors. Filtering oil gasoline through a coffee filter or nylon stockings & canvas or help or glass fiber cloth, anything that you can do to remove these waxy threads will improve the quality of the filter gasoline. Petrochemical diesel fuel stability excellent with over 10 years of shelf life without damage, while adding a cetane booster to B10 or B20 or B80 biofuel blends can extend their shelf life 3X or better.
The Brazilian sugarcane ethanol more efficient to make than corn ethanol in America. This helped to enhance the economy of Brazil by making Brazil less dependent on oil or moreover helping Brazil to ease away from importing oil, thus keeping fuel money spent in Brazil reinvested into the sugarcane ethanol, especially because ethanol much cheaper than gasoline. Ethanol fueled vehicles hold an 83% market share in Brazil, better than anywhere else in the world. It's kinda like Nuclear Energy in France, where the French electrical grids get 70% of their electricity from fission reactors! Many countries like Japan are not naturally abundant with oil resources, so alternative ways to make electricity like biofuels, biogas recovery from trash & compost or food waste, nuclear fission, solar PV rooftop, geothermal heat pumps & air source heat pumps, countries without crude oil must use other means to make energy, like the exceptional geothermal energy systems in Iceland.
GMO tinkering started because we are running out of new pesticides & the pests that harm crops are becoming pesticide resistant. Climate changes is changing the weather, when it rains, how long it rains, how much rain water fall & at what rates, such that flooding more common with shorter more intense rainfall now, while droughts are hotter & dryer & longer lasting, which causes 70% losses in some crops, like the Citrus Greening in Florida sadly. China responsible for a lot of the pests that cause billions in losses in agriculture around the world. China bioweapons lab in Wuhan created the COVID19 virus that caused massive economy damage worldwide.
The CCP in the PRC the most unethical government in the world. CCP an evil sick unethical immoral government, and China's government partnering with Russia's government, the seeds of World War Three are being planted. GMO or genetically modified organisms are used to make insulin and analogs of insulin like Lantus. GMO enables the creation of crops that can tolerate climate change better than conventional or organic crops. GMO lets us tune the biology of plants cultivated like corn & soy to improve yields even in poor or low nutrient soils, giving the plants the ability to survive flooding & drought conditions better. GMO citrus tree's could solve the Citrus Greening problem affecting Florida Oranges. Many biologics, emerging post small molecule pharmaceuticals like MAB or PAB, monoclonal & polyclonal antibiosis are made using GMO bacteria & GMO fungi or GMO stem cells or other genetic engineer technology.
