In large cities waste incinerators combust waste collected from millions of people by hundreds of trucks daily that bring the combustable waste to a combined waste heat facility the burns the waste in a controlled air injection enhanced with afterburner system that boils water to generate electricity in steam turbine generators while extra waste heat from the exhaust of the power turbines then pumped to hundreds of thousands of houses for district heating, so the trash burned turns into electricity & heat for homes in cold regions like mega cities in Germany.
Combined heat & power very common at waste incinerators around the world today & most of them are also equipped with advance emissions controls to minimize air pollutants released by the waste incinerator smoke stack which the visible parts consist mostly of condensing water vapor, like little clouds emitted from the exhaust :)
Much of the waste streams contains plastic, which was made from crude oil petrochemicals in the first place. These energetic polymers contain a lot of chemical energy for combustion, but can actually be converted back into crude oil or synthetic oils in polymer to oil conversion reactors or advanced synthetic fuel refineries that make biofuels & other emergent fuels like DME or dimethyl either using waste streams of other chemical products :) This way pollutants from one sector of society can become a useful resource in another sector. This is all part of intelligent waste management.
Biogas recovery from waste dumps in Americas actually sold to utility companies that blend it into natural gas distribution systems to sell to utility costumer who then use natural gas at their homes in the water heater to make hot water or the furnace to heat air or some even have natural gas powered ovens & fridges, called adsorbption fridges, that happen to be popular in some Amish communities where biomass burning of wood used to make heat for homes, hot water for bathing, electricity & to cool the fridge. Some RV or remote vehicles or recreational vehicles feature a propane fueled fridge enabled by adsorption technology that turns propane combustion heat into cooling of the fridge by moving heat through a working fluid that adsorbs the heat, vapor chamber like technology, similar to a heat pump or AC cooling system, there are cleaver engineering ways to move heat around using heat exchangers & vapor pressure manipulation in copper tube & aluminum intensive devices with electric pumps etc like a typical domestic refrigerator freezer or air conditioning system or a HVAC air source mini-spit heat-pump heater cooler :)
One of the best ways to harvest a temperature differential using the difference between the daytime high temps & night time early AM low temps, so the heat pump can optimize energy efficiency for more efficient heating & cooling throughout the seasonal changes in weather & climate conditions variable and always changing. For example, in the winter, its cold outside, so a heat pump integrated into a fridge can help to keep the fridge & freezer content cold by using the cold outside to suck away heat that's leading into the fridge freezer because of the poorly designed insulation cost optimized to make it feasible to sell the unit for a profit & not to make the most energy efficient possible fridge, like the Sunfrost models made in California that cost $3000 or more that use 9x less electricity that a typical conventional fridge.
Most home windows are so inefficient at preventing heat leaking that they use a U factor instead of R factor used to rate insulation because the window would have a less than 1 R factor or is basically terrible as an insulator, but people value natural light so much because their vision & eye sight the only sensory system of the human body that work with great precision to evaluate phenomenon over great distances easily. This means your have to be right up on something to touch or taste to smell it and relatively near it to hear it, but you can see stuff from far away easily if you have good eyesight.
The human eye retina an self assembling biological imaging system with the occipital lobe of the brain processing the images to stream it up to the magic happening behind our eyes so we can have a inner hallucination impression of our perceptual experience such that what a small child experiences without knowing much about life or how things work has a radically different experience than a typical adult in the same scenario. The more you know & understand the more you are able to appreciate! This is why educated people demand more from governments & businesses. This is why making an intelligent population causes society to improve in all ways faster, because intelligent people want to make everything better constantly optimizing & improving like a tireless engineer, always looking for smarter ways of doing everything.
