Nissan Leaf SV Spare Tire

If you have a Nissan LEAF you might consider getting a scissor jack, tire iron for the wheel nuts, spare wheel with tire & mounting this as a kit in the trunk or foot well of a rear seat.

That way if you have a tire blowout, you don't have to ruin your wheel & tire pressure sensor with that tire goop & destroy the hose of the nice air compressor included with your LEAF.

That compact Continental 12v air compressor well made & works great with a tire puncture repair kit that you can but online or at an autocrats store. Avoid using the tire sealing goop canister with the air compressor unless it's your only option, since using the goop will break the $100 tire pressure sensor & destroy the air compressor hose.

Nissan Altima has an alloy spare wheel & tire that works on all 4 wheels of the 2011-23 Nissan LEAF's & sometimes you can get one for $50 -$100 from a junk yard! Harbor Freight has a cheaper scissor jack or small hydraulic jack to keep in your leaf so you can jack it up to change out a blown out tire, or use a tire patch kit to fix a nail or screw hole so your not stranded for long, or swap out the busted tire on the OEM wheel with the spare tire & wheel that you buy as an aftermarket accessory & store in the truck or back seat foot well.

You can also pay a small additional monthly fee for "free towing" on your car insurance, but that can still take hours for a dispatch & you will still have to pay something out of pocket. This kind of coverage better for scooters & motorcycles were it is completely impractical to carry a spare wheel & tire kit.

Due to the low flat battery pack in the rear underside of the Nissan LEAF SV, Nissan did not include a spare tire on an alloy rim in the trunk area which would eat up 4 cubic feet of the otherwise class leading 23 cubic feet of utility storage volume.

Nissan did include a nice Continental 12vdc air compressor & can of tire sealing goop to use with the compressor, but using the tire sealing goop will destroy the $100 tire pressure sensor in the wheel & tire being sealed & will also destroy the hose of the otherwise nice compact 12v compressor. The expensive can of tire sealing goop also has an expiration date after which its not useful due to spontaneous polymerization inside the can that causes the liquid goop to partially solidify after prolonged heating & cooling cycles experienced inside the cars cabin.

My Full Sized Spare Solution / Extension & Commentary including a recent popped tire bailout :)

Yesterday evening around 5pm my sister Andrea called me & said "Hey, are you home?" I was, actually writing a recent blog posting, then she asked "Can you come help Phillip & I, he had a tire blow out on the on-ramp to i405N from Sunset Rd in Renton and his car was on the shoulder with the front passenger side wheel tire popped (right front tire)" so I agreed. Meg & I got into her 10 Prius & my sister texted me a GPS link to their exact location.

Phillips & Sissy had contacted Metromile but still had not heard back by the time Meg & I got there & helped complete the spare tire replacement procedure, so they could go to Costco & get a new tire mounted to the OEM rim where the old popped tire was still mounted.

Philip had gotten the wheel nuts off the OEM wheel with the blown out tire & had used the included in the trunk scissor lifting jack to lift the front corner of the car, but soft dirt on the shoulder of the on-ramp caused the base of the jack to plug into the soil & tilt, getting the base of the jack stuck in mud right up against the popped tire.

Incredibly, Phillip being a medical assistant with years of experience was waiting for my help when a man in a Mercedes SUV pulled up on the shoulder choking out from pizza stuck in his throat & Phillip was able to do the Heimlich maneuver to clear the dry pizza blockage from the older man's throat.

So Meg & I believe the God arranged the entire event so that Phillip would be there on the shoulder of the freeway on-ramp at exactly the right time to help this man. This man having been saved by Phillip dug out the scissor jack from his ML320 SUV and brought it over to us to help. I was using my 1/2 metric sockets on a vintage full sized torque wrench with the 21 mm socket to articulate the OEM Honda spare tire jack to remove it.

I asked Philip to get a rock to put under the jack so it would not slide or plunge into the soft compact soil & incredibly by the time I got the stuck in mud jack out from under the wheel, Phillip had found & handed me a hand sized 2 inch thick relatively flat rock.

I used this flat rock under the jack & my torque wrench with the 21mm socket to screw the jack up & lift the front corner of the car so that we could remove the wheel with the popped tire & install the spare wheel+ tire that Honda included in the Civic trunk, along with a tire iron & scissor jack.

After installing the spare tire, I hand tightened the wheel nuts, then used the torque wrench in a pentagram line alternative tension eliminating pattern to snug down the nuts, then set the torque wrench handle to 45 lb-ft, and torqued each wheel lug down until the torque wrench clicked, then did it again with just a bit more force to make sure all the lugs holding the spare wheel & tire to the hub were secure for safety focus method execution.

I went the pentagon inspired full-size spare wheel & tire setup with a brand-new 16" x 6.5" Factory OEM Steel Wheel Rim that fits 2013-2023 Nissan LEAF models for $116 all said from E-bay
