Pesticide & Fungicides Sprayed on Fruit, Nut & Seed crops Killing Bee's ($20 billion/yr in Pollinator Death Cost)

Modern synthetic chemicals sprayed on crops are killing the bee's clear & simple, no rebate as all the scientists & all the research even from the companies that make the chemicals clearly show that these substance are toxic to bee's, they are also neurotoxins & carcinogens that cause costly diseases in sensitive children as their early developmental stage body more sensitive to chemicals than an adult. These toxic substance are persistent in environments for years, ending up as dust that blows around long distances.

Toxic POP persistent organic pesticide substances (NEONICOTINOIDS)  get into soil, air, dirt, rivers, lakes, streams, ponds & other ecosystems where they wreak havoc on bird eggs that never hatch, nearly every living creature on earth ends up being harmed somehow in some way by constantly low level exposure to these profit focused chemical substances sprayed on crops to prevent pests from ruining the crops.

Parasites & mites & viruses also weaken the bee's, making them more sensitive to pesticides. It's a negative feedback loop of toxic pressures on the bee's they have a hard time coping with. The chemicals the kill the mites also harms the bee's by weakening the bee's immune system, then the pesticide caused CNS damage to the bee's, + fungicides are hard on the bee's hemolytic system (insect blood) and are a further cause of colony collapse disorder or CCD killing off bee colonies.

Its hard for the farmers & they use the least amount possible, but its really a loss of communication between farms about who is spraying when, who has the bee's when, its communication breakdown that causes a lot of the bee death.

Make a smartphone app called "Bee Strong" for Apple or Android that allows anyone to send their congress person or senator a message promoting bee protection methods that work like the protection for cattle & beef agriculture so we can upgrade Bee pollination by improving communication & spay schedules so nearby farms can coordinate to reduce bee harm, & lets work with the chemical companies to develop Bee safe pesticides & fungicides that are non-toxic to bee's!

Component to HDMI

We have a DVD video disc player from 2003 by Mitsubishi with Component Video Output & our TV uses HDMI inputs so I searched around online & found a Component to HDMI so I can hookup the old DVD player to our far newer TV monitor. I did about 20 min of product research comparing S-video to composite & component video & HDMI technology using google searches to compare each & arrived at a component to HDMI with RCA audio in as the cheapest best quality 1080P solution. Optical DVD with TV works as long as you have power, even if the internet offline or there is a grid power outage. If you can turn on your TV & adapter & DVD player, then you can watch a movie during a power outage. Streaming is great when everything working, the grid up & internet online, but offline optical disc technology can work even in areas without internet access to watch HD videos, aka. movies or shows :) The Amazon Images of the produce give very useful information about how to hook up the converter from your video source device to your video monitor or display or TV or projector. Converters allow new & old technology to connect & are an interesting way to make use of old gear until the COTS fully depreciated or no longer working. Given this DVD player 20 years old for example, this an antique way to video DVD video discs via this converter on our 4K TV in 2023 :)

Signal quality from this unit has some edge tearing near the bottom of the frame & other visual artifact and letter boxes the image on our TV so you do not see the whole image as we would watching the blueray disc version of the same movie on our blueray player. I just thinks DVDs are fun throwback before streaming became normal, before blueray became the last physical disc content distribution platform before holographic quartz cubes with terabytes of storage capacity are commercialized in the future. Think a tiny cube of quarts where solid state lasers can read & write data at densities unmatched by most other means possible so that entire libraries of 8K movies can be stored on a single little optical cube with a 5000 year shelf life if undamaged, much better than DVD, Blueray Disc, CD, or even archived film store in climate control cool, precise humidity, dark storage. Nothing lasts forever, but some scientists did encode most of wikipedia onto small nickel metal foil squares assembled in a highly protective block & sent to Earth's moon for long term storage // a backup of all information created on Earth up until that point in History, even if everything goes to seed in the Biosphere of Earth because of world wide nuclear war in World War Three or because of runway climate change because of catalytic trigger from global carbon combustion emission of 10 billion people alive at the same time.

Miles Per kWh (Fuel Economy in Electric Vehicles)

Newer electric vehicles with lithium ion batteries convert DC into AC to drive the motor & wheels & when the vehicle coasting, slowing, going down hill or braking the traction motor becomes a generator and regeneration charges the battery in a way that boost range between 5-25% depending on route, driving style & driving mode or settings related to the intensity of regenerative braking, like E-pedal that allows one pedal driving from a stop to any legal speed & back to a stop with only modulating the throttle & never touching the brake pedal in our 2019 LEAF SV.

Common passenger cars are between 1-5 tons of mass and are able to carry between 2-9 adults and cargo like groceries, bicycles, snowboards or skis, or utility goods of any kind & many other items or stuff, the list of items possible to transport inside an automobile depends on the format of the vehicle, if the seats in the rear fold down to extend access to the truck space, if there is a roof rack or towing hitch to pull a trailer & many other factors that affect utility volume or cargo carrying capacity. In general as you add mass of stuff to a vehicle the fuel economy will decrease as the added mass requires more energy to accelerate. Another issue is that roof racks with a large object like a canoe will require more energy to move since they created added air resistance that can increase vehicle energy used by 10-25% while towing a trailer can double energy use.

In conventional vehicles fuel economy ratings of miles per gallon are common in America, while kilometers per liter more common around the world. In electric vehicles the metric can miles or kilometers per kWh.

In our nearly fully loaded 2020 Nissan LEAF SV on loan while the 19 being repaired, I have driven over 500 mi since 3/21/2022 & am averaging 3.9 miles per kWh of electrical energy or around 250 watt hours per mile. That means the 38kWh of remaining battery energy storage in our 19 would given 3.9 mi/kWh * 38kWh = 148.2 mi or better than the OEM new EPA rating of 151 mi range city / 121 mi range highway. Did you notice that at 55-80 MPH the energy consumption of driving your EV radically increases. It takes far more energy to go faster than 50MPH than it does to go slower than 35MPH in boxy metal automobiles with mediocre aerodynamic efficiency like around or just less than CD (coefficient of drag) of 0.30  - while an exceptionally aero efficient Aptera CD only 0.13 by comparison!

In the battery electric Aptera it can go 80 MPH with only 95 watt hours per mile, making it nearly 3x more energy efficient at highway speeds because of its ability to slip through the air at highway & freeway speeds without creating turbulent drag that pushes & pulls on the vehicle like these forces do to non aero-optimized boxy SUV, Box trucks, busses & typical passenger vehicles or consumer privately owned automobiles or cars. The fleet average fuel economy of passenger cars been climbing over time because of improved technology and stringent & increasingly challenging government emissions regulations that the automakers must comply with in the form of EPA air pollution requirements for vehicles catalytic converter emissions controls & fleet CAFE or corporate average fuel economy & measures like gas guzzler taxes.

A typical automobile sold in 2023 gets around 30 MPH highway and 24 MPG city, for a net fuel economy average use case realization of ~27 miles per gallon of gasoline burned. Common EV's like Nissan LEAF or Chevy Bolt or Tesla Model 3 get between 110-120 MPG-e when you compare energy economy to fuel economy with this metric. The high fuel economy equivalent rates are because electric motors in EV's are between 82-98% efficient at converting battery DC energy into torque to spin the wheels to move the car, while net system charging efficiency of Li-ion EV batteries around 88% depending on L1, L2,L3 charger technology, current rate, battery temperatures, battery cooling method, battery warming method, specific battery chemistry and other factors. The most important factor for a vehicle fuel economy or energy economy in electric vehicles the drivers control of the throttle or gas pedal. The adage is that the driver or operator or human controller "The most important nut to tighten in any vehicle"

How much you spend per day, per week, per month, strongly affected by the energy economy or fuel efficiency of your vehicle. The Boeing Dreamliner for example uses 45% less fuel that similar capacity older aircraft so its much more profitable to operate even with higher fuel costs, even though its costs more in capital costs upfront that cheaper vehicles made with aluminum at lower upfront cost while the 787 CRFP optimized to radically lower mass & aero-tuned to reduce drag & wing tip turbulence & to make air flow around & over its aero-control surfaces more effectively, all combining to improve fuel economy, while the speed of travel of ships & aircrafts can be used to access super-cruise modes where fuel use reduced at slightly slower speeds. 50 MPH the most efficient highest speed in most automobiles while 570 the most efficient speed in most passenger airline jets. Going 85 MPH more than doubles fuel consumption in conventional automobiles by comparison as does going 700+ mph in passenger jets. Higher speeds increase drag penalties.

Have you flown a paramotor? Its a 2 stroke motor fan backpack of 40kg attached by strings to a soft fabric wing that you wear like a backpack while pulling the wing behind you so that the incoming air hitting you inflates the wing & causes it to lift pulling you & your backpack motor fan up as you engage the hand throttle & the motor spins up the propulsion fan to generator thrust so that your a hanging pendulum under the loaded wind. These parameters travel at 25-50 mph & I call them sky scooters because they can't even go freeway speeds like 80 MPH in the midwest in middle America / and you can't even fly them around populated areas.

I had a paramotor in early 2002 and sold it because it was a royal pain to go on a 3 hour + road trip just to get to an area where it was legal to fly. I bought it used from another 20 something guy in Redmond Wa for $4600 & spent $1200 more on warm flight gear & mineral oil & fuel oil & AV fuel & fuel additives & a two stroke motor rebuilt kit that I had to install after 300 hours of motor operation. I think all said I dropped about $8000 over 1 year on that paramotor & sold it for $7100 with all the other gear I had acquired to a 30 something from Tacoma Wa. This rig was a fuel hog & would eat the 10liters of fuel in 2 hours of flight, not surprising because of the terrible thermal efficiency of the low mass high power 2 stroke motor used to drive the backpack fan. I broke 1 composite blade during an accident where a large piece of wood debris was sucked into the fan as I was taking off near the ground. The fan was damaged mid-flight from a bird strike earlier which induced a small defect & tiny increase in vibration that eventually propagated caused the blade to violently shatter when a small bit of tree limb debris got sucked in to the fan cage & smacked the leading edge of the prop blade. Battery electric para-motors do not produce smoke or soot emissions & cost less to operate, but have less endurance per charge due to the heavy per unit of energy lithium polymer batteries & electric motor driver of the prop.

In late 2004 I ordered a Prius II from Toyota of Renton for $26,500 with the #6 tech package, drove it for 17 years and sold it to Alan my wife's genetic father for $2,000 with 160,000 mi ODO and OEM NiMH battery & upgraded AGM SLI51 12v battery. His 2014 Ford F150 gets 14 MPG normally & 17 MPG if he hyper miles it & since he drives a lot of trips between Oregon & Idaho & Oregon and Washington, he drives 3-5x more than me, so the Nissan LEAF SV works great for me & he can save many thousands per year on fuel by driving the 46 MPG Prius II vs his fuel gobbling truck.

2013 Nissan LEAF gave us 3.8-5.3 mi/kWh for 24 months before being lease returned

2015 Nissan LEAF gave us 3 years of 4.1 mi/ kWh before trading it for Meg's Prius III daily / roadtrip ^^

2019 Nissan LEAF giving us 3.3-7.1 mi per kWh and I have not driven it enough (only a few days, before I gave it back to the dealer for repairs we agreed on as part of the purchased, so they gave me 2020 LEAF SV as a loaner and I am getting 3.9 mi/kWh with a mix of city & highway use and able to get much higher energy economy if I avoid rapid acceleration bursts & focus on hypermiling efficient driving. It's just so much fun to hammer the throttle & get that face melting instant torque acceleration that only BEV's give as the battery electric motor setup can go to full output nearly instantly. There are 5000lb Tesla EV's that go 0 to 62 MPH or 0-100km/h in 2 seconds in Ludacris launch modes in the P100D Plaid edition for example or a fully loaded Model 3 dual motor :)

Our 2020 Yamaha MT-03 motorcycle gets 53-85 MPG & can go up to 112 mph & range based on 3.5 gallons of fuel in the tank, longer than I can ride without getting all stiff from being seated like that without moving around. I think its good on long road trips on motorcycles to stop for a refuel get up and move around a little 5-10 min break ever 1-2 hours of operation. This helps to prevent blood from pooling up in the legs which can increase the risk or clotting, stoke or embolisms, a major reason why sedentary lifestyles of toxic & staying active & physically fit so important for health & wellness.

Our 2013 Honda PCX-150 gets 88-105 MPG and really shines at 25-50 MPH speeds though it can hit a top speed of about 70 MPH out of its 13 HP 153cc liquid cooled & fuel injected motor. It only holds 1.1 gallons of fuel so range about 100 miles between re-fuel sessions.

Our 2001 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro gets 10-42 mpg depending on driving style, tire pressure, route and particularly by vehicle speed & control theory or driving technique. Driven at 50 MPH on the highway in warm air or level routes it can get better than 45 MPG but that's kinda a unicorn situation. The trick of slow gentle acceleration & keeping speeds by anticipating traffic and light changes ahead, a series of tricks known collectively as hypermiling, its involves slower smoother & steady operation with intense concentration to constantly energy optimize while maintaining safe operation.

Meg's 2010 Prius III averaging 44 MPG on her city hill intensive local commuting & driving for work routes, while on longer road trips last summer we saw more than 50 MPG averages even with very fast midwest highway travel at 75-85 MPH.

Transportation energy economy & home energy economy are major interest of mine because of how they influence my daily operating costs, budget, financial planning, cost reduction measures, lowering my carbon footprint, trying to no be wasteful & aspiring to be as energy efficient as possible. I do short pulse submarine showers less than daily to save water and electrify at home. I try to re-wear clothes more before washing them. I try to fast rinse dishes right after eating to keep food goo from sticking on which would require more hot water & soap to remove. I switched to cool & sometimes warm settings for more laundry modes settings to reduce hot water & electricity use. We lowered our apartment thermostat a lot recently & I will write up how this radically reduced our utility bill which was $268 last month for 1956 kWh in our 1200 square foot 2 bedroom all electric apartment with garage ground floor connected that cost $3600 per month now & will increase to $4000 per month if we sign another 13-15 months lease. We consider this cost obscene & plan on moving.

I don't think spending more than $2000 or $2300 per month for such a unit where we live makes sense on our income level. $3600 per month is $122 per day. I think $80 sounds like a more reasonable rate, given our budget, that's $2500 per month. $1350 considered affordable for our income level, but there is literally nothing for rent nearby, even studio apartments without parking cost $1500 or more per month. $1350 per month works out to $43 daily rent costs. We are going to be forced to pay 1.5x this amount because of rent inflation because of gentrification and landlord rich people exploiting the working class. Meg's employer the doctor pays $4000 for a large 4000 sq mansion with a 3 car garage. That makes this apartment a complete ripoff. We can rent single family homes for $1000 per month less than this stupid Anthology Apartment, which is why we are moving when the lease ends at the end of July.

Our taxes are rip-off too. If we work a little more & make even more we actually keep less because it bumps us into the next tax bracket and our rate would climb from 17% to 24% / which is a complete ripoff & illustrates how the 900 pages of IRS code are dedicated to helping billionaires make even more money while marginalizing and holding down the working middle class. Doctors that we know nearby make over $300 per hour & consider the local real estate costs a complete ripoff. Homes nearby that originally sold for less than $50,000 around 1980 are now more than $700,000 and many are over $1,000, 000 plus the property taxes add up to over $1000 per month. This its not affordable to working middle class families. Many of the people that own homes nearby purchased them long before the 4x price inflation after 2007 otherwise they would be stuck renting overpriced apartments like Meg's & I. When I tell these people what I pay for rent they are shocked at the ripoff prices.

Shame on landlords for exploiting their renters for obscene profits. Shame on automakers for selling inefficient wasteful vehicles when they know how to make the same vehicle use radically less fuel!

Shame on scammers & thieves & other bad actors! All will stand before God to have their soul judged!

May I make a moral appeal if you are exploiting others for profits & personal benefit? My childhood best friend Matt Mayo inherited $11.6 million & within 10 years committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a large caliber handgun. Money itself does not make a happy life. There was a time not long ago that medical bills & other problems put me $63,000 into debt, so I was owing more money than I was making. I had car payments & the medical bills kept pouring in as a result of an accident & illness, then I was between jobs without income as was Meg for a while. The debt piled up & was highly demoralizing. thankfully Matt let us rent his house in Renton for $800 per month because he thought the increase rent & home prices were ripoff too. He said "People can't just increase their income by 3x so how can normal families suddenly pay that much more for a place to sleep & cook dinner?" His house had been in disrepair & not rented for 5 years when we moved in & we had to upgrade it a lot to make it safe to live in by getting the wildlife out, fixing the mold & other mildew problems, drywall repairs & plumbing & electrical repairs, a new roof, more insulation, new windows & more. So that low rent price was offset with a lot of construction DIY costs as I did most of the work.

Meg & I actually talking about getting a Motorhome & a tiny plot of land nearby where its legal to park & live in a motorhome - knowing it will cost $1000 per month to operate / that's way less than the rent nearby. I need just enough land for to park the motorhome, and to build a large shed for our other vehicles to store stuff from our current apartment & previous house that's in structured storage for $220 per month right now.

We just turned off my mothers $220 per moth Comcast account & enabled a new one in my name for $60 per month. We previously switched from Verizon to Mint Mobile to reduce our wireless costs from $160 per month to $30 per month. I think our recent extreme energy reduction methods can reduce our PSE bill to under $100 vs nearly $300 from before, for electric energy even with me L1 charging my Nissan LEAF SV overnight like right now. I plugged it into our deck outlet last night at 9pm and will leave for work at 6 am, so 9 hours L1 at 1.6kW means 14.4 kWh or at $0.16/kWh about $2.30 daily or about $55 monthly, though I can also L1 charge over an extension cord for free at work & L3 boost at the dealer for free too, so my actual cost per month for electrical energy to charge the LEAF actually more like $40.

I will post updates as I learn more in my DIY life experiment that emerging // especially since many changes were after 3/21/2023 when our roommate mother died of covid complications. She was the reason we kept the thermostat at 76 F & was causing the Comcast bill to be really high for cable & home phone service & was using prodigious amount of tissues & toilet paper & electricity & hot water. So I see more ways to further improve energy conservation at home, here & at our next place in 3.5 month when we move to a new place with lower rent prices or do the land buy RV motorhome deal or whatever //

Battery Electric Vehicles or BEV's Older than Gasoline ICE Vehicles

Battery electric vehicles predate gasoline powered versions when they started operating on roadways in 1880's. Slow with low range, the only sold in urban city areas where there was electrical power to recharge the relatively low energy density & fragile early flooded lead acid batteries PbA that amazingly are still present in nearly all vehicles today including our 2019 Nissan LEAF SV battery electric vehicle as the 12v SLI battery in what look like a 51 or 51R format from brief visual inspection of the terminals since I purchased the vehicle used in early 2023 with nearly 46,800 mi ODO on it before I bought it. It still at the dealer where they are repairing the front window & some cosmetic damage to the vehicles paint "arctic white" as part of the purchasing agreement for $20,710.55 all said out the door. Yes, that was only an OK deal but I really wanted a base model in that color & that was actually the cheapest one they had & used car prices are inflated locally.

Automakers standardized 6vdc electrical systems with 3 cell PbA flooded batteries back in the early 1900's when hand crank started low compression engines were upgraded with optional electrical starter motors, Cadillac offered electric starting motors first. Shortly thereafter 12vdc setups with 6 cell PbA batteries started appearing. Today 12vdc the de-facto standard DC voltage of cars, rising to 14.26v when the vehicle engine on & spinning a magneto in early designs or alternator generator in later designs. In the Hybrid vehicles from Toyota & most battery electric vehicles like the Nissan LEAF a DC:DC converter used to transfer 55amps at 14vdc with a SLI charge controller circuit to keep the 12v aux battery charged, since these vehicle do not have a starter motor or alternator & the main traction motor energized by AC power at 35-800vac between 10-450 hertz with a poly-frequency AC motor controller or variable frequency motor controller that takes 250-500vdc from the EV battery pack & converts it to higher voltage variable AC frequency to drive the traction motor with energy, thus energizing moving magnetic fields that either induce magnetic fields in other windings or laminations or conductors in the rotor or by pushed to oppose magnetic fields in IPM or internal permanent magnet motors that have better energy efficiency while magnet free induction motors can be made without rare earth metals but suffer from slightly lower magnetic flux transfer efficiency that reduces their net performance per unit mass & total power output, especially at higher RPM where the magnetic flux of the induced core rotor voltage produces magnetic drag with magnetic fields manipulated in the windings by the motor control unit that can also turn the induction or IPM motor into a motor generator for brake energy regeneration to recover battery charger while slowing the vehicle down, also known as regenerative braking, which can extend single charge range by 5-25% depending on ECO or E-pedal one pedal settings that can adjust the level of regeneration.

Nissan LEAF from 2009 onward was not a clean sheet EV design, its based on the exact same body shell sheet steel stamping design of the Nissan VERSA, but with a single electric motor & gear reducer the LEAF drivetrain has thousands of fewer parts than the VERSA & much more durable, far more reliable, far longer lasting, far more powerful, faster, and really only has one wear item other than basic suspension stuff like brake pads and tires & bushing, the lithium ion air cooled battery pack with a rating of 40kWh storage capacity which gives a real world range of 80-240 miles per charge depending on how many miles per kWh of Energy Economy your able to achieve while driving. Officially EPA rated at 151mi per charge new, the battery in our 19 LEAF has 92% of its original capacity & the dash range estimate still 158mi per charge in ECO when 100% charged, though I stay away from any charge rate over 85% to enhance the battery pack life, since 100% charging causes lithium ion batteries to lose their capacity faster, known as accelerated degradation, as does draining them to below 5% charge.

I love the Nissan LEAF because it was the first mass marketed battery electric EV available worldwide as of 2011 & I leased a 2013 w/24kWh battery for 24 mo & gave it back, then purchased a 2015 in 2017 and then traded that 30kWh version for Meg's Daily 2010 Toyota Prius III that we have road-tripped extensively, like 8,800 miles over 45 days all across America last summer break! I am a School Bus Driver so I get summer break, part of the reason I chose this job, winter, mid-winter & spring break too^^

My current one way commute 9.8 miles via a 30 MPH road that connects to i90 where I go west to 405N until NE4th st & then up to the transportation hub for BSD. Using hypermiling I am able to make it to work using only 4% battery & similar energy economy on the way home by only going 50 MPH on the freeway like a slow semi-truck in the right lane so people can easily pass me at higher speeds in the lanes to the left of my lane of travel. In stop & go traffic, think I405 during morning or evening traffic peaks, the speeds can very from stopped to 70 MPH and then back to 0 or vary from 3-8 MPH in standing wave pulsing made worse by drivers not looking ahead & creeping at low speeds, instead speeding up then coming to a stop over and over again, which increases their emissions, fuel consumption, vehicle wear, tire wear, brake wear & driver stress levels- basically stupid driving worse in all ways vs hypermiling smoother & steadier with predictive sharp focused anticipating techniques to optimize energy economy while preserving safety & road rule following integrity. For example it's illegal to use the freeway or highway at speeds lower than 40 MPH in light flowing traffic nearby as the posted speed 60 MPH.

During the gas crises in the 1970's in America, the FED reduced freeway & highway speeds to 55 MPH after the EPA produced evidence that doing so would save tens of billions of gallons of fuel annually since aerodynamic penalties increase with speeds such that driving 60 MPH uses 78% of the engines output to shove air around the vehicle where only 18% of the engines energy used to push the air at 50MPH, and 50MPH also known as the aerodynamic cross-over point velocity where air drag issues become far more important to energy economy & vehicle stability. In many racing vehicles the aero-surfaces used to produce downforce to improve traction do not even work at lower speeds because not enough air is flowing over these surfaces to engage the Bernoulli effect of differential pressure to generate downforce. An F1 car produces so much downforce at higher speeds that it could literally fly upside down on an inverted road surface.

In boxy passenger cars like the Nissan LEAF SV the automakers use cleaver underbody smoothing, streak contours, integrated rear diffusers, up tail wing spoiler at the top of the real window at the roof line & cleaver geometries like a lower lip spoiler on the front bumper to help smooth air around the frontal cross section or what the car looks like head on in terms of resistance to flowing air, with Aptera achieving the lowest coefficient of drag of 0.13 while a highly tuned Tesla Model 3 gets 0.26 & Nissan LEAF 0.28, the lower the better as a lower number indicates better aero-efficiency at cutting through the air as the vehicle moves forward, which becomes a energy efficiency issue for fuel consumption or battery range per charge at speeds greater than 50 MPH, though even at 40 MPH some aero-effects can be pronounced. If you have ever ridden a bicycle down a steep hill, you will notice the wind noise in your ears gets really loud at 26 MPH, so that's actually where the sound pressure levels or aero-effects start to pick up, since air drag increases as a 3rd order exponential of forward velocity. This means that going 70 MPH uses 4x more energy than going 50 MPH, and most vehicles will best their EPA fuel economy rating on highways if driven in the highest gear at 50-55 MPH, very gently going a little faster downhill & a tad slower while climbing, such they your always trying to keep your throttle minimal to reduce energy consumption.

The Aptera 3 wheel a clean sheet design with exceptional energy economy. The battery electric Aptera can go 3x further per kWh than any other boxy shaped EV, even the Tesla Model 3 which obtains an average of 260 watt hours per mile while the Aptera only 80 watt hour per mile. I am getting 3.7 mi/kWh in the 2020 loaner Nissan LEAF SV, and that's with many aggressive high speed acceleration bursts that I find absolutely enjoyable or fun. I even gave my coworker Quintin a test launch in the parking lot from 0-40MPH with full power by turning ECO off. If I disable traction control via the dash computer interface, the EM57+ motor will shove the full 280 ft/lb of torque & 149 hp of power into the front wheels so as to smoke the tires literally! I never turn off any of the electronic stability or traction controls & mostly drive with ECO button activated or the E-pedal switch activated to maximize regeneration & enable one pedal driving from a stop to any reasonable legal speeds with just modulation of the throttle & without ever touching the brake pedal with my foot.

Diesel engines are still widely utilized in large heavy vehicles like ships & busses because its a proven way to make radical amounts of energy & torque at a cost structure that was only recently eclipsed by Tesla with its 4680 Tabless battery tech at a cost of $57 per kWh, amazing given that when Sony commercialized Li-Ion batteries in 1990 they cost $3700 per kWh. That radical decrease in the cost of lithium ion batteries & solar PV modules helped to usher in the popularity of rooftop solar PV installations on single family homes with whole home battery energy storage systems like the Tesla Powerwall paired with their Model 3 BEV for charging at time of day. People with these setups make a lot more money than me. I charge our used LEAF & the loaner LEAF with the EVSE over 120vac standard power outlet at Level 1 trickle charge speeds overnight, for many hours at a time. In theory, using the EVSE to charge from 0-100% the 40kWh battery pack would take 40 hours to charge. In reality I never drain below 305 or charge above 85%.

Its freezing ice frost window cold outside early in the morning lately nearby, and I am getting 3.7mi/kWh with the heater HVAC on 90 full hot setting & AC on for moisture removal & seat heating & steering wheel heating and all lighting turned on worse case highest energy setting operation, but careful hypmiling means 30-85% charges or 55% of 38kWh remaining capacity gives me about 53% or 23kWh of shallow cycle long life battery mode operation. 23kWh at 3.7mi/kWh means a range of 85miles while driving to work, back, to work again & home again I only rack up 40 mi of driving daily while commuting. If I stay at work all day & never come home, I only drive 20 miles per day.

The Nissan LEAF an excellent car around town or for short commutes & not good at all for longer road trips. Using the CHAdeMO L3 Fast CD charger at 44kWh and warm weather temps means the air cooled battery pack will be damaged faster, if the user tries to road trip their Nissan LEAF SV. Get a longer range EV if you want to go on EV roadtrips, since they are available with up to 516 miles per charge now. The LEAF is an economy hatchback family commuter car for mostly in-city use where gasoline ICE vehicles get their worse economy in slower & stop & go traffic, the LEAF also has the lowest operating cost per mile.

Consider the cost of putting 23kWh into the LEAF pack using the EVSE extension cord charger into my apartment deck outlet at $0.16/kWh so $3.68 to go 85 miles or  $0.0432 or less than 5 cents per mile, half the cost per mile of our Toyota Prius which has the lowest cost per mile of any gasoline fueled vehicle because it they get 40-60 MPH on regular unleaded gasoline and last a long time with legendary reliability to also net Toyota the distinction of Lowest Total Cost of Operation.

Given the cost of LEAF battery replacements, it really depends on if you buy a new pack from the dealer OEM for $8000 for the 40kWh battery or have a mechanic harvest a wrecked LEAF SV to get a slightly used but much better capacity 40kWH pack for $4000 all said, what you pay to replace your old faded EV pack will strongly affect your future operating costs, as will the price you pay for electrify to charge your EV. LEAF still wins the long term lowest cost per mile with models from 2011 going more than 300,000 miles ODO with the original battery packs and a single replacement pack of slightly higher capacity, 24kWh & 30kWh respectively, its also possible to install the 40kWh LEAF SV pack in older first generation LEAF's resulting in much greater range per charge.

Gasoline engine vehicles had more range per fuel tank fill-up and were able to travel at higher speeds so that made it easier to get around faster & then faster & cheaper than BEV's in the 1880-1920 era where battery electric cars based on PbA or flooded lead acid were losing popularity to earning ICE vehicles fueled by low octane crude gasoline in low compression early engines, while most EV's of that time maxed at at less than 18 MPH the early gasoline vehicles could reach 50 MPH, then 80 MPH & then faster as engine designs & gasoline were improved with engineering at automakers & oil refiners that turn crude oil into gasoline & diesel fuels and many other petrochemical products like sulfur as they have to remove sulfur from on-road diesel fuel since sulfur in the fuel would produce sulfur compounds in the exhaust that combine to make acid rain in the atmosphere, known as SOX or oxides of sulfur, similar to NOX or oxides of nitrogen another exhaust pollutant in diesel vehicles that required the used of DEF urea injection + PDF or diesel particular filters to make modern school buses compliant with EPA vehicle emissions rules.

When diesel burned in turbo-charged direct injection engines at high compression it results in 45% thermal efficiency, so a heavy diesel vehicle gets 30% better fuel economy that a similar vehicle powered by a gasoline engine, and the heavy duty construction of diesel engines means they last longer in terms of hours of operation. A typical gasoline ICE engine lasts around 3,000 hours before tear-down rebuild that cost more than the depreciated value of the older passenger car at that high mileage ODO setting old used state of operation. Who is going to pay a mechanic $3000 to rebuilt an old used car engine. Diesel engines can last 20,000 hours of operation by comparison, meaning they are 6x more durable. This is why industry uses turbocharged diesel engines in commercial vehicle operations. Aircraft turbine engines have a similar overhaul frequency for complete teardown rebuilt after 20,000 hours of operation.

So diesel engines are really durable, they just make really nasty exhaust pollutants, much worse than gasoline engines. In smaller lighter passenger vehicles like a VW Passat TDI fuel economies of 50 miles per gallon were easily achieved with conservative driving, but even going over a mountain pass or the midwest at 85 MPH they still net 45+ MPG. VW was convicted & fined for the TDI emissions scandal & discontinued diesel engine development & went double down on EV development & even bought back many older TDI vehicles from owners because of Dieselgate laws rules & orders. My diesel mechanic friend Mark told me to never buy a diesel passenger car to move me around, because only the big commercial diesels like the cummins bus engine in the school buses I drive are actually reliable & durable, but only in big heavy vehicles. My large school bus gets 5.9 miles per gallon, but holds 65 students, so fuel economy per person exceptional when its fully loaded with passengers :) 383 miles per gallon per person for example :) Even when I only transport 30 students, that's 177 miles per gallon per person.

Road trips are better in hybrid electric or conventional ICE vehicles. Early BEV's are not meant for long trips even using FAST DC charging. Consider how EV batteries will improve over then next 20 years. If you consider 2011 Nissan LEAF the start of the EV revolution in transportation energy decarbonization, it will take 30 years for EV market penetration to supplant ICE vehicles on roadways, which will always be around since billions of gasoline fueled vehicles will have been produced by then. Many government are moving to ban the sale of gasoline only vehicles by 2030, 2025 or 2035 respectively. So countries have announced going net zero carbon by 2050. Renewable + energy storage + EV's means a system or eco-system electrical that an enable broad decarbonization of energy & transportation.

There are many things to consider when buying a car or automobile. Your vehicle choices will strongly affect your current & future financial outlook & budget. Choose wisely & think about it more before making a choice & remember you are never stuck with a vehicle, you can always sell your old one or trade it in on a new model. You're free to buy whatever you want & do as you will as long as you do not infringe on other peoples similar freedom & they do not infringe on yours. That's why I think prostitution and common drugs of abuse should be legalized, like magic mushrooms, LSD, MDMA & brothels respectively. No one should tell you how to think or what to do or how to choose with lifestyle choices. You have to decide what kind of person you want to be. I endeavor to be as much like Christ Jesus as I am able to be as a Christian, but often fail for a long litany of reasons. You can read my blog to understand why, but would be better served to read edifying content on Wikipedia or watch educational YouTube videos or "How To" videos online & teach yourself & learn new skills & abilities throughout your life. Be the best version of you & don't listen to other people. What they say about you does not matter anyway, they could never know enough to give you good advice anyway. You have to figure out what you like & enjoy & what kind of life you want to life while obeying moral precepts of respecting other peoples, not stealing, not harassing & not causing harm.

A car not even a good transportation solution for 10 billion people, noting that there are not 10 billion cars on roadways in the world today, perhaps less than 2 billion total production & most of those have rusted apart or fallen out of use for scrapping or recycling. Our 1992 Subaru Legacy was scrapped out in 2017 after 260,000 mi of use over its 25 year lifetime. I think it was a little over $20,000 back then, so we extracted all the useful life out of it. At the time of scrapping it needed thousands in repair & we already had 2 other much newer lower mileage better fuel economy vehicles, so scrapping it made sense. I had consulted more than 40 people about it before deciding to scrap it out & everyone said it was a good idea.

Those 1990's made in Japan vehicles are some of the longest lasting most durable & well made simple designs for automobiles of any ever made, some consider 1990's JDM vehicles a golden era with such superlatives as the Toyota 2JZ inline 6 engine :) I happen to favor the 1NZ-FXE 1.5 liter high thermal efficiency Atkinson long stroke engine of our Gen. 2 Prius that we are selling to Alan as a high mile commuter vehicle since he drives from Oregon to Idaho & Washington regularly, while even hypermiling his 2014 Ford F150 truck nets only 17 miles per gallon vs 44-48 mile per gallon in the Prius II by comparison. That will reduce his annual fuel spending by 2x or better, saving him more than the purchase price $2k that we are selling it to him for after using it for 17 years ^ 160,000 miles. I expect this Prius II to go more than 350,000 miles & will help Alan change out the 1.3kWh hybrid battery pack & 12v AGM SLI51 battery when such is required.

I loved this Prius & did not want to get rid of it, but Meg really wanted me to sell it to Alan to help him out with his fuel cost predicament since I do not drive much locally for commuting & because we have a 2010 Prius III that Meg daily for her ultra short commute and driving for her work as a nanny around 10-70 miles per day, 3-4 days per week. I think this Prius III can go 350,000 mi & am curious to see how long we keep it. Our 2001 Audi A4 only has 91,000 mi ODO so we decided to keep it as a vehicular nostalgia reminder of its owner the late Connie who kept it garaged for its entire operating life, something we will continue to do. I do not care if my 19 Nissan LEAF SV commuter parked outside & am installing a cheap 40w driver seat cushion heater to help on cold rainy early morning days so I can use the HVAC less to preserve driving range on the smaller 40kWh battery pack that has about 38 kWh of useable capacity now after around 4 years and 500 ish cycles of use by the previous owner. I had to pray to God for many days to fully let go of the Prius II in order to sell it without remorse to Alan, and Meg then said I could buy a used Nissan LEAF for no more than 20k, so that's exactly what I did. Some new waterproof rubber floor matts, warm yellow LED H11 DRL headlight upgrade, ROVE R2-4K dash cam & 40w Seat Heater cushion + aux-power splitter y cable outlet -  round out my updates, $121 + $31 + $176 + $49 so a total of $377 in aftermarket parts + $20,710.55 total out the door with repairs from dealer of front windows & pain including taxes & registration all said, so $21087.55 absolute total :) Now I just have to energize it with electricity & spent about $24 on mobile app's for Charge Point & Semi-connect // 1 pay L3 DC Fast Charge + mostly charging free at Bellevue Nissan L3, using an extension cord at home & at work over L1 EVSE cable // nearly free or super ultra cheap electrical charging. It's about $4 to go 85 miles, so it's similar to $4/ gallon fuel in a car that gets 85 miles per gallon or around $5 cents per mile electrical cost.

You might be able to tell that I spend a lot of mental time doing analytics on financial business planning concepts & energy efficiency cost of operation vs premium efficiency models to understand operating costs & energy costs & compute the cost per mile or total cost of ownership, operating costs, energy costs, or related battery technologies & their market history like the radical decrease in cost per kWh of lithium ion batteries after Sony first commercialized Li-ion in 1990 for their walkman during a time when Japanese battery makers were only interested in selling Sony NiMH and NiCD or nickel metal hydride & nickel cadmium batteries respectively, which forced Sony Research & Development to work on actual supply chain & production manufacturing during the vertical internal commercialization of Lithium Ion battery making for Sony's first laser welded in a clean room Li-Ion batteries available for global consumption in the iconic Walkman personal audio players starting in 1991. At this time Li-Ion cost Sony $3700 per kWh to make, decreasing to $57 per kWh with Tesla Battery Day 4680 tab-less cells cost optimized to lower the price floor of EV batteries for the upcoming Tesla Model 2 for under $24,000 with 250mi range per charge making it then best value per dollar of automotive tech of any automaker, something that Sandy Monro and associated will tear down analysis for cost of making understanding & to see the tech on the inside as they have done with every popular EV released so far :) Noting that SMA noted the Model 3 so over-built that some well cared for Model 3's will last for 3 million miles and 50+ years of daily operation.

You want an EV or TDI or Gasoline Direct Injection Turbocharged Toyota Corolla GR 4WD rally racing monster or similar Honda Civic Type R with 350HP hot hatch cooker or a slick EV Polestar or Model Y or whatever GM Hummer EV // not all EV's are energy efficient like a 120mpg-e Chevy Bolt EUV my personal current best value pick because of its range & liquid cooled battery pack longer lasting & wider temperature range operation + less damage when L3 charging a 55kW respectively. I went with a used Nissan LEAF SV because of their availability & cost & because I have an iconoclastic association with LEAF since 2011 when Meg & I started "LEAF Spotting" while out & about. There are tons of electric vehicles on the roads where we live east of Seattle in the overpriced gentrified suburbs where apartments cost $2500-5000 per month, where single family homes that sold for $60K or less in the early 1980s now sell for over $1 million, those prices have slipped $100k downward now as the real estate bubble popping along with the USD being ditched as a reserve currency by many nations worldwide as more nations keep choosing to ditch the quantum easy inflated USD fiat currency in favor of crypto currencies, leading the charge is the CCP in China & Russia, under the deranged leadership of Vladimir Putin- as China & Russia want to destroy the US economy ^ have said so openly publicly without any ambiguity.

Energy efficiency a major topic in the compute space because of cloud computing services & software as a service & streaming platforms & e-commerce & many other IT based infrastructure business trending & emerging SAS platforms, online education, online banking, online investing, online research, online companies without a physical space, virtual stores & video & audio streaming like Pandora or Spotify or Amazon Prime TV or Hulu or Netflix over high speed wifi networks via Comcast Xfinity Blast Speed network access, or even connected vehicles that can upgrade over-the-air like all Tesla BEV's & even my EV connect network Nissan LEAF SV.

Innovation Improving Energy Efficiency

Reducing drag in passenger vehicles like Aptera aero- efficient designs means a smaller cheaper lower mass battery like a 16kWh pack can give more range than a 40kWh pack in our 19 Nissan LEAF SV that uses a practical cost optimized cheap metal stamping design that was extensively optimized to make Nissan Versa the most affordable new automobile sold, though the LEAF program means that design was improved extensively for the battery electric LEAF which has a similar hatchback shape as a hybrid Toyota Prius or similar passenger automobile with excellent energy economy or fuel economy or fuel efficiency or low fuel use per unit of distance traveled so as they say people "Let's Go Places"

Toyota Yamaha partnership Axial Motors taking cues from Koenigsegg RAXIAL motors design by Genius Christian Von Koenigsegg, blessings be to his name!

Improve electric vehicle motors means longer range with same battery or same range with less battery at lower mass & lower cost & better performance lighter weight gives better vehicle dynamics

Consider an 85kWh pack in an Aptera giving it 1200 mi of range per charge!

More insulation & smart solar thermal energy capture in buildings

Shorter showers with hot rinse, then off + soap up + then warm rinse off, using a timer to race yourself to reduce water use & natural gas or electricity used to heat the water / save time too, since we are all running out of time alive!

Hypermiling efficient driving in any vehicle to reduce fuel or energy use to improve range per fueling session or recharging session. Save time by going to the gas station less often, or charging station less often, and enjoy lower energy or fuel costs that save you money in real time by just driving smarter with energy efficient driving techniques called hypermiling! Efficient driving reduces tire microplastic emissions & tailpipe emissions in the vehicle or from the factory-- think lifetime total energy for the vehicle or Total cost of operation or cost per mile - you can go further cheaper faster & better by just applying more intelligence to your vehicle control theory in application on the seat of your pants in real time while driving!

Improving tires means lower rolling resistances & reducing microplastic emissions and longer tire life with better traction all season & all around better longer life & longer lasting & more durable & stronger & tougher! Polymer technologies developed for road car tires making tires today way better than tires from the history of automotive applications. They last much longer now & are much more durable & stronger.

Solar PV rooftop for $0.20/ watt into Battery Energy Storage whole home batteries, so no power outages as long as sky light on cloudy days or sun on sunny days hitting the PV shingles from Solar City 4.0 installed facing the sky

We can capture waste energy & reduce emissions in many industries, even at home by thinking less wasteful, cheap, frugal, economical, practical, low cost, low impact, less waste, better in every way

Our 22 MacBook Pro edits video 2x faster with 30x less energy than our 19 iMac, so there is an example of how improving computer chips made by YouTube video production process radically less energy intensive, so even the energy from the 12v automotive outlet can 60watts can do a lot of video editing on the go in a smaller lower mass machine with superior chip technology!

At electricity energy operating cost of only $0.0456 per mile our 2019 Nissan LEAF SV base model gets 111mpg E with 3.3-5.3mi/ kWh or more than double the efficiency & half the cost of operating our 2010 Toyota Prius III which has a fuel cost per mile of around $0.21 with gasoline at $4.40 / gal while netting 44-54 mpg on regular unleaded gas.

Some instant hot water heaters can save you 3x energy costs of hot water vs a Tank Water heat if you bundle hot loads together, laundry, shower, dishes into a one big hot run & then cold off for days, where those days in the water heater would be losing waste heat continually by comparison.

A heat pump air sourced mini split can use 1 unit of electricity to move 4 units of heat for cooling or heating all season & is the most energy efficient way to provide AC + Heat in a RV or Car. Nissan LEAF have heat-pump technology for HVAC. Mitsubishi Mini-Split air source heat pumps about $1300 & perhaps $600 to install, but are 5x more energy efficient than a conventional AC setup + heating setup - so as a solution for billions of people the Air Source Heat Pump can be applied in multi-family condos & apartments & single family homes & duplexes or office spaces or school rooms where each room can be kept at different temperatures with a strong insulating safety door separating rooms.

Not flushing for just pee at night so many people can urinate in the toilet for 1 mega flush the next morning when someone goes poo. This can save trillions of gallons of water! I pee in a gallon sized plastic bottle & save up to combine with a #2 flush later on & save more than 30 gallons of water daily vs flushing every time I pee for example. Meg does the let the yellow mellow thing with our toilet too which saves another few flushes every night // so if people just think a little more about how to waste less they can save money & reduce their negative impacts on nature.

Frugality smart & makes for less wastefulness!

Nissan CMF-EV Platform for ARIYA & Renault Megane e-Tech

Stunningly beautiful ARIYA EV SUV and Renault Magane e-Tech built on the CMF-EV platform

145kg of mass removed from the electric motor, motor controller, charging system, cabling, & heat-pump warmed & liquid cooled battery pack that can charge at 130kW continually at a higher continuous charging rate than Tesla Model Y for example which tapers off the charging rate to protect the battery from degradation, the CMF-EV pack developed by Nissan was designed to handle continual 130kW DC fast charging without fading capacity of the battery pack!

Nissan started the worldwide EV revolution when they announced LEAF 2009 & began shipping units worldwide in 2011 when the LEAF was awarded the World Car of the Year award for its then highly innovative design & technology, long since being passed up in these regards by Tesla Model 3 which is now the worlds best selling EV as of 2023, though more total units of LEAF have been sold around the world with more than 600,000 Nissan LEAF's driving around in the real world right now!

The EV space heating up with many electric vehicles powered by lithium ion batteries from most of the worlds automakers. The SUV_EV space in particular trending with well healed boomers looking for better ingress & egress ergonomics to make getting into & out of the trending SUV EV easier on their aging bodies, skeletal & muscle systems. Consider the Gen. 2 pro-pilot that only requires a light finger touch on the steering wheel to keep it auto-steering on the highway while the 62kWh battery gives ~200 ish miles of range per charge & the fully spaced 82kWh battery gives more than 300 miles per charge.

2-ton electric SUV's have more interior space than their ICE ancestors due to the flat clean sheet skateboard battery pack electric motor drivetrain solution developed by Nissan & much earlier by GM for related prototype electric cars that were debuted when I was a child in the early 1990's. I learned about EV's from a CD-ROM disk that I got from a wire spinning retail rack at Bartel Drugs, showing the car featured in Demolition Day movie, the GM Ultralite made of carbon-fiber.

Its been possible for the automakers to make battery electric automobiles since 1880, as the first vehicles sold to the general public were able to go about 12 mph for 20 miles using flood lead acid batteries made o of lead & lead oxide plates held apart inside a wax coated wooden box since plastic was not commercially available yet. Grid power for electric lighting applications had been available in some urban centers as early as the 1770's though electricity was mostly a novelty for science demos & magic performances at that time. During the first Industrial Revolution electric motors began to enable the mass production of goods in more places than river powered hydro energy machinery systems that only worked in factories located near large bodies of flowing natural water like larger rivers & very large streams.

Using NiCD or nickel cadmium batteries long popular in exceptionally durable DeWalt 18v drills & other power tools, some NiCD batteries well made high quality by SANYO can last 25 years of daily deep cycling. A SUB-C NiCD battery can pump out 40amps at 1.2vdc, which is amazingly high power output that power tool makers utilized to energized compact magnet brushed motor tools & later brushless DC motor tools, mostly powered by LFP or lithium iron phosphate the more durable longer lasting lower energy density variant good for 20 years and 3000 deep full discharge cycles, though not popular in EV applications like NMC because LFP nominal voltage 3.2vdc not 3.6-3.785vdc like lithium cobalt oxide or lithium nickel manganese aluminum (minimized cobalt content) liquid cooled & warmed electrically batteries in the US Market Tesla S3XY models respectively.

The Chinese Market Model Y uses LFP because its more abuse tolerant to deep cycling and charing infrastructure less developed and grid power less stability in many locals in China where coal power & rapid industrialization prioritizes power flow to factories in FEZ no-tax zones for exporting goods to import money economy focus, while the general public in many locals in China has to deal with grid power outages & brownouts more frequently than most factories & where massive amounts of air pollution are created as a result of widespread use of coal power thermal coal combustion power plants to make grid energy while releasing enormous quanties are acid rain forming fumes & particulate matter or PM super fine soot & dust & smoke that clogs the local air with pea soup foul smelling toxic funk that causes many Chinese people to immigrate to other countries, so they can breathe better & so their children & elderly parents can recover from the lung disorders & breathing problems caused by inhaling coal power emissions.

Electric Vehicle Battery Packs

After 10-15 years or 2000 to 3000 cycles or 100,000-350,000 miles of use powered EV traction motors to move electric vehicles around the EV lithium ion batteries often still have 50-70% of their original capacity & can be repurposed in renewable solar PV energy storage or Wind Power storage applications to improve capacity factor & uptime usability of the renewable energy since loads do not often match production times of intermittent renewables like solar photovoltaic rooftop energy systems or wind power production intervals.

This mismatch between intermittent renewables & grid power loads one of the main reasons that energy storage so important to improve renewable energy systems so they can match the abilities of natural gas, coal & nuclear power plants in terms of uptime & load following & capacity factor to enable Firm Renewable Energy production with large MWH or GWH battery energy storage system or mass energy storage systems or an other capacitor or super-capacitor energy storage systems.

I can envision Solar PV automobiles with Super-Capacitors & a smaller Battery Energy System that have excellent acceleration, superlative energy economy like the aerodynamic Aptera 3 wheel automobile or emerging solar electric vehicles with extra sky facing area covered in PV modules that pump DC directly into the EV battery pack even while driving :)

Lets say you purchased a 2011 Nissan LEAF with a 24kWh battery pack (lithium manganese spinel polymer pouch in aluminum case air cooled) and drove it 100,000 miles before the battery pack lost enough capacity to justify an upgraded battery pack. Some newer 40kWh battery pack from a 2018-2023 Nissan LEAF SV that was in a cosmetic roll-over or similar front end collision can be scrap recovered to capture its relatively good 90%+ capacity battery pack with 36kWh of actual energy storage, that you can buy used for $2000-4000 & pay a mechanic $1000 to collect it & swap it with your faded 24kWh pack that now only holds 15kWh.

Now the range per charge of your 2011 Nissan LEAF greater than when you purchased it new, since the new used battery holds 50% more energy than the new OEM pack back then. So you can now drive it 150,000+ miles before the 36kWh fades down to 30kWh, after which both the OEM pack & the scrap recovered pack can be utilized for grid energy storage in stationary applications where the mass or energy density of the pack modules far less important than in an EV.

ROVE R2-4K Dashcam

Our used 2019 Nissan LEAF SV 40kWh gets a new dash camera + micro-SD memory card! Important to implement given the way people sometimes drive nearby. I like to collect video imaging evidence of what I am seeing while driving forward to combine with my car insurance as forms of legal protection from poorly skilled, drunk, tired, or distracted drivers. At times I might even download the video files & upload them to my YouTube channel as "Bad Drivers / Seattle, Wa, USA" or similar title.

Lithium EV Batteries & BEV Market

Typical lithium cobalt carbon batteries were invented & commercialized by SONY in 1990 for the Walkman & Digital Cameras at production cost equivalent of $3700 per kWh at that time, having declined in the Tesla 4680 tab-less battery to $57 per kWh respectively in NMC chemistry.

Early Li-Ion were encased in a stainless steel housing & laser welded closed within an inert argon environment to prevent moisture from reacting with the lithium or cobalt used in the cathode while high purity graphite or hard carbon used in the anode material. Petrochemical electrolytes & an ion permeable membrane separator film between the anode & cathode enabled Li+ ions to shuttle between the anode & cathode during charge & discharge respectively. During the initial formatting charge a SEI layer formed that consumes some of the lithium while making the protective layer that prevent dendritic shorting from forming during later battery cycling & aging.

Li-PO or Lithium Polymer batteries replaced the heavy dense stainless steel case with aluminized mylar wrapped around the rectangular packet cells typically of hobby RC toys & in other portable electronics like laptops, tablets, smartphones & smartwatches respectively. This increased energy density to above 260wh/kg respectively, while the theoretical peak energy density of feasible lithium ion chemistries goes to 600wh/kg with 4th generation lithium sulfur batteries just now achieving commercialization in medium volumes for specialized aerospace drones where the highest energy density battery energy storage value exceeds the premium paid for lower volume production packs of high cost per unit, by contrast to mass manufactured common lithium cobalt chemistries found in high volume global production electronics like iPhone or Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

Cobalt the toxic conflict mineral mined by forced labor & children in fail states in Africa that many EV makers like Tesla sought to replace in newer chemistries that use more aluminum, nickel, manganese & even silicon in the anode instead of carbon for faster charging. At Toyota solid-state lithium ion batteries are being produced for pre-production beta testing EV's for the 2025-onward MY vehicle offerings of Toyota BEV' or battery electric vehicles, noting Toyota's early avoidance of EV's for the pursuit of hybrid electric vehicles based on NiMH or nickel metal hydride battery made in conjunction with Panasonic the battery supplier. These NiMH Prius batteries have better cold weather performance than typical Li-ion batteries below 40F or 10 C, in very cold winter weather like that encounter in parking lots of ski resorts as people go skiing or snowboarding all day, having driving their hybrid electric Toyota up the mountain pass to the ski resort with diesel & diesel electric chair-lift cable chair systems to move skiers & snowboarders up the mountain so they can carve the powder or groomed snow on the way back down in a silent symphony of kinetic ecstasy often with music in the ears under the head beanie to add some audio texture to the experiences of sheer joy :) I have been snowboarding since 1995 & absolutely love it!

Even living in Issaquah, my 19 Nissan LEAF cannot make it up the pass the Summit at Snoqualmie because climbing the pass at 70 MPH with the heat going full blast would juice the pack before I got there. I got the LEAF for local commuting to & from work. That's by far the closest ski-resort to our current address. Meg's 10 Prius III way better for longer energy intensive highway trips like that.

Back to the topic of EV's

Yes, replacing the battery packs in an older EV with a faded battery can cost between $5-20K, but there is also no engine or transmission. Consider the electric motors in most EV's super durable for 1 million miles of operation or 40+ years before the magnets lose a lot of their magnetic flux density from high heat levels respectively or heat cycling. There are examples of 2011 Nissan LEAF with over 300,000 miles ODO where the only major repair cost was a replacement 24kWh battery pack.

EV's like the Nissan LEAF have their best energy economy at lower speeds, achieving peak miles per kWh in the 8 mi/kWh at around 16 mph. As aerodynamic penalties start to add up at higher speeds the energy economy drops to 3.1 mi/kWh at common highway & freeway speeds of 55-80 mph. Sorry only American Imperial units in this one. I am writing about EV batteries for other English speaking people to consider, since people in America often have enough vehicle budget to buy a newer used Nissan LEAF or Tesla model something respectively.

The OG LEAF went through two major revision, resulting in a 30kWh variant in 2015 & stylistic upgrades & heat pump based more efficient HVAC systems being first commercialized in automotive formats in these later editions. In 2018 the 3rd generation was launched, called the 2nd Gen or ZE1, its actually a 3rd revision of the EM57+ motor drive system & 40kWh battery pack chemistry that's more fade resistant & with longer calendar life & cycle life vs the previous versions. A 62kWh & then 60kWh pack were made available on the SL+ variants. 2018-2023 model year Nissan LEAF are scheduled for a technical improvement upgrade to the battery & motor for the 2025 model year, probably with liquid cooling like that present on the Nissan ARIYA, which comes with up to 82 kWh of battery good for over 300 miles of range per charge for just over $60K new.

Most privately owned automobiles are parked 90% of the time for 21 hours per day. Many people get home before 8pm & do not leave for work until after 5am the next day. That's 9 hours parked, where even extension cord EVSE level 1 charging can add 2-5 miles of range per hour, depending on driving style. A lead foot driver in a Nissan LEAF going full blast on the highway driving like they stole it can achieve 2 mi/ kWh while a typical driver on the same route can easily get 3.5 mi/kWh, and with light hypermiling slower speeds & inertial conservation techniques its possible to get 5.1-7.1 mi/kWh especially in flatter topography environments with warmer but not hot weather.

If you are going to L3 44kW Fast DC charge a Nissan LEAF for 5-25 minutes on the go its best to do so very early in the morning around 5am when the outside temperatures are coldest and your LEAF at its lowest net temperature, or the battery temperature on the lower side of the scale as displayed in the Batter Temperature menu on the dash display computer where many other battery charging metrics & system functions can be adjusted via steering wheel controls.

More than 500,000 Nissan LEAF are on the worlds roads today, though the Model 3 from Tesla the best selling BEV after 2020 & still the best selling EV as of early middle 2023. I looked up the insurance cost for a Model 3, 2.5x than what it costs to insure our Nissan LEAF for the same model year, and the model 3 holds its value better so used ones are not available at steep discounts via depreciation like a used Nissan LEAF for example.

Na-ion, Solid State Batteries, Ceramic Batteries, Foam Batteries, Metal Air Batteries. There are literally more than 100 different alternatives to Lithium Ion batteries commonly used in electric vehicles. Even within the lithium ion space there are over a dozen different chemical options. Consider the LFP or lithium iron phosphate or lithium titanate or lithium sulfur batteries as examples. Lithium Cobalt Oxide cathode with Carbon Anode was just the first mass produced and oldest & most refined version that's also mass manufactured for all sorts of portable electronics today! The overwhelming majority of consumer electronics intended for mobile use cases rely on common lithium ion polymer batteries with a single cell nominal voltage of 3.7-3.85vdc and full charge voltage of 4.26vdc, though stopping charging at 4.11vdc makes these lithium ion batteries last 5x longer. They drain to around 3.0vdc & can be drained to lower voltages but doing so can damage the cell & cause a lasting loss of capacity instantly.

Existing lithium ion batteries do not work well if frozen cold & most EV's have batteries heaters to keep the pack temperature above 40 F in order to prevent freezing. If a lithium ion batteries is frozen & charged it causes lithium metal to plate out of solution & form a hard short circuit & catch fire, venting with flame & toxic smoke contaminate with burning cobalt & burning mylar coated in aluminum. I was charging out an iPhone battery that had been glued into the iPhone in south east Asia instead of being held in with polymer pull tabs the way Apple & Foxconn make em, and upon trying to pry this battery from the machine aluminum case of this older iPhone Plus, the LiPo cell ripped & got super hot & started smoking & then caught fire. This filled the 5000 sq. ft store with blue white smoke & the iPhone burned to a crips and looked like it had been in a hot bar-b-q oven for a while. I knocked the phone off the repair pad & bench into a sand bucket & took it outside & it continued burning & smoking intensely for a while, completely bricking or destroying the iPhone. Thankfully the man who owned it was expected this & had already backed up everything and was looking for an excuse to go buy a new iPhone & was not upset at all.

Still Coffee Crazy, Dark Roasted Espresso Baby :P

Took a deep dive into Espresso with a Eureka Mignon Notte grinder & cheap Espresso machine with an upgraded basket & I even 3D printed solid a tamper for it which works great even with 20kg of pressure applied & a very precise fit to the 51mm stainless steel basket with wood handle :)

I usually pull a Longo shot or use my Aeropress with espresso grind & pour in water at 185-190 F & let give it a stir & then let I hang out & extract for a few minutes, then plunger it, or in the case of the espresso machine I pull a nice double shot & then let the water heater heat up again & then Longo out more water through the coffee.

If I wake up really early before 4am like today, I not only do the above, but I take the spent coffee grinds & put them into a big glass jar & then pour hot water over them & let them steep like a French press for another 5 minutes or more, then rinse the paper filter for the Aeropress & reset it into the holder & then use the Aeropress as a filter, pouring the glass jar mix of hot water & espresso grinds into the Aeropress to filter it into a cup for enjoyment. I call this triple extract coffee grounds "Eisenhower" coffee in reference to WWII encouragement to double brew coffee grinds to conserve coffee for the war effort. I also call this engineering coffee since the grinds have been extracted three times 3x to get even more of what is there in ground roasted coffee beans into a watery emulsion for enjoyment :)

I really like French & Italian dark roasted coffee espresso beans & prefer the toasted charged burned marshmallow leathery bitterness & complex flavors that remind me of camp fires & charred foods that tasty amazing, like grilled to crispy fat from animal flesh or meat :)

Industrial, even the Japanese who are famous for elaborate tea have an obsession with coffee :) Coffee started its life with people in Ethiopia when goat farmers notices their goats acting strangely after eating coffee fruits from wild growing coffee trees that were native to what is now modern day Ethiopia. I love Ethiopian coffee & Kona coffee from Hawaii, but am not a coffee snob & appreciate most any coffee from around the world & glad there exists many styles to choose from with a range of flavors to keep it more interesting & many methods of preparing it to keep me entertained & engaged in the early morning & in those famous James Hoffman YouTube videos :P

Electric Vehicle Benefits EV or BEV

Save money on your taxes with EV incentives even on used EV's with 100+ miles of range :) Even better incentives or tax breaks for purchasers of new model year EV's for that years income taxes. Common electrical prices means filling up a Tesla Model S P100D battery pack with electricity for 300 miles of range only cost about $12 of electricity.

A similarly performing gasoline vehicle like the Model S P100D achieves 10-15 MPG real world fuel economy & requires premium more expensive fuel grades to prevent detonation in their higher compression & boosted or turbocharged or supercharged engines.

With an EV or BEV I am talking about saving thousands of dollars per year on vehicle energy by switching from buying gasoline to buying more electricity from your electrical utility that already sells your many kWh of electricity for your home appliances, lighting, fridge, computers & to charge to portable electrons or COTS.

Our 19 Nissan LEAF S 40kWh $20k all said with 47k ODO

Our used 2019 LEAF 40kWh looks like this
Stock Photo from
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Leaf

I found a nice 2019 Blizzard White 40kWh base model Leaf for $20k out the door all said & made a deal, it had 46,867 miles ODO & the dealer going to fix some issue with the paint & cracked front window replaced, so it was a good deal. Probably a little steep on the price, but the dealer also taking care to tune it up & fix the cosmetic issues with it & replace the cracked front window & it's very clean too.

Apple Watch Series 8 Black with Black Zirconia Ceramic & Stainless Steel Band Kit

Right wrist rocks the latest Apple Watch paired to my iPhone 14. Left wrist a classic digital Casio G-Shock, Citizen Eco-Drive, NH35A automatic 24 jewel 3044 Invicta Grand Diver, Seiko 3R36 Automatic with Metallic Orange Bezel or the OG Seiko 5 4R26 automatic from Overstock.com my first automatic wrist watch, or even a Croton SS & Ceramic quarts from Papa Schwarz or any of several other quartz or automatic movement watches in my collection, the Titanium Eco-Drive my personal favorite- I even recently changed out its 14 year old Lithium Titanate battery with a new one :)

I use Apple Watch as an elaborate Fitness & Sleep tracker, alarm clock, to check the time to set my other watches, to text message & make phone calls, to query Siri, to check the weather & it seems to work great. The ceramic Apple Watch Strap & 8th Gen. Apple Watch survives my submarine water saving shower where I use a few minutes of warm hot water to rinse off, then turn the water off & soap up all the way, then warm rinse off, not every day, more like every 3rd day or about 2x per week or 3x per week during spring, summer and autumn when I am more physically active, sweaty & smell more ripe accordingly. I wash my watched with soap and water so water resistance key functionally to keep them fresh & clean!

I charge my Apple Watch at home using its charging cable magnetic puck into my laptop or into a power adapter in my car that can charge my iPhone lightning port connection & has 2 USB-A outlets with 4.8amps of power, so iPhone & Apple Watch can charge at the same time while I am driving to work. I only do the car charging if I space out during my morning routine since I wake & leave very early as a school bus driver, covering just less than 10 miles one way to get to work, mostly via i90 & i405 to downtown Bellevue, Wa, USA. I love being a school bus driver too :) There are 6 other school bus drivers at the bus hub when I work that have Nissan LEAF or Chevy Bolt EV's. They all love them too & gave me very encouraging advice to get another LEAF after I explained that I leased a 24kWh 2013 LEAF S for 24 months, then purchased a used 2015 Nissan LEAF S and drove it for 3 years and ended up trading it for Meg's Prius III.

Phone calls on the wrist via Apple  like James Bond or Dick Tracy or Inspector Gadget, the Apple Watch has really poor battery life & high maintenance daily charging required in stark contrast to my other watches. I aim to take it off its magnetic charger over USB-C connection to our M2 MacBook Pro when the battery gets to around 80% state of charge. Keeping LiPo batteries in gadgets included EV's between 30-80% makes them last 5-10x longer. It's the top 10% of charging from 90% to 100% that causes the most damage, as does draining to below 5%.

I am nearly ready to buy a lightly used 40kWh Nissan LEAF with Meg's blessing. We have to file our income tax first. I am ready to drive electric again after missing our them 2015 Nissan LEAF S for many years now. That was my most favorite of any car I have ever had. I love the way the Nissan S drives, silent with instant torque. I use a OBDII BlueTooth ELM reader to the LEAF SPY app to get the infographic data on the battery wattage motor & other variables & statistics on the go // to keep an eye on the under the hood operations & electrical actions of the affordable family EV! I will need to update my Geico car insurance to reflect the vehicle change!

Our Apartment all electric too, using 1800-2000kWh per month because my mother likes keeping the indoor temperature around 76F when its 30-50 F outside, resulting in very high energy costs of nearly $280 per month. When she goes to be with God, Meg & I plan to stay here & lower the thermostat settings to 68 F warm and 60F at night & will cut the Comcast Xfinity Triple Play from $220 per month to just blast speed internet for $80 or less per month. We will close out our storage unit, sell the Audi, use the garage & other bedroom to move the storage unit items in so we can gradually sort through them & downsize & summarize, recycle, donate, sell & consolidate our old stuff that's disused in dry storage that we are paying $230 per moth for. That's more than $500 per month in savings upcoming.

I am actually going to buy a Nissan LEAF, BEV in the immediate future after discussing the issue at more length with Meg. We are going to give Alan our 05 Prius II because he will get a lot more use & save a lot more on fuel more quickly on his road trips for work & to visit his grand children. I have enjoyed Astro the Prius for 17 years & it's now time for him to bring Alan gasoline savings at $4.50 per gallon // I found a nice 2019 Blizzard White 40kWh base model Leaf for $20k out the door all said & made a deal, it had 46,867 miles ODO & the dealer going to fix some issue with the paint & cracked front window replaced, so it was a good deal. It drives nice & is very cool & Meg & I really like it! I have visited the Nissan Dealer in Renton & South Bellevue & used their LEVEL 3 fast chargers at 50kw to fast boost the battery pack from 40-69% / keeping the battery charge in the middle of the charge range makes them last a lot longer, up to 5-10x longer than 100% charging & draining to 1% or fully deep cycling. This applies to portable electronics with lithium ion batteries like a smart watch or smart phone or smart clothing or anything lithium ion or Li-ion powered. BEV or battery electric vehicles like the 3rd gen. LEAF 2S that we purchased 4 years old with about 500 cycles on its battery pack. I can still travel more than 135 mi per charge, and takes off like a bat out of hell with instant torque & some 147 HP & 286 ft-lbs of torque, that's around 100kW power & 388 N*m newton meters of torque respectively. Its actually a Second Generation NISSAN LEAF, but I called it 3rd generation because the first in 2010 was 24kWh, then in 2014 and updated version was 30kWh, then in 2018 to 40kWh. Our 2019 features the J1772 LEVEL 2 charging port for ~7kw charging rates & the CHAdeMO LEVEL 3 DC fast charging at up to 50kw, though the rate tapers to 18kw as the charge state approaches 70% & battery temperature increases.

Toyota Prius vs Nissan Leaf

LEAF vs Prius Energy Operating Costs or EOC

Lets say you have $35,000 to spend on a new car, SUV or automobile & you happen to be into energy efficiency or value fuel efficiency or are armchair environmentalist, or technophile like me, then you might wonder which has lower TCO or total cost of ownership, lower OC or operating cost, what the cost in terms of CPM or CPK cost per mile or cost per kilometer, these fuel or energy costs will vary depending on local electrical utility rates for the EV & gasoline prices for the hybrid.

Say that each cost $33,000 out the door, not including insurance, tires, oil changes, electrical energy, fuel, or other soft costs & operating costs, especially the nasty depreciation losses over time. We can know that the Prius will depreciate slightly slower than the LEAF because the early state smaller battery in the LEAF and because of the high reliability & proven durability of Prius models. We can assume they have similar insurance costs.

We can also assume they have similar capacities, aside from range per charge or fill-up respectively. Vehicle registration cheaper for the Prius because EV have to pay surcharges for their lack of contributing to gasoline taxes, here in Washington State, USA. This means $300 a year for the new Prius and $700 per year for the new LEAF for tabs or license plate stickers that verify the vehicle is actively registered in King County where I live.

Using local west coast USA $4/gal gasoline price

Using electrical cost of $0.14/kWh the US national average, though slightly cheaper $0.10/kWh locally

2023 Toyota Prius Eco LE gets about 55 MPG US or 4.4 L/100km

2023 Nissan Leaf 40kWh Battery gets 111 MPGe or uses 30kWh of electricity every 100 miles or 160km

To make the maths easier we will use a block example of my 40 mi daily commute or 200 miles per week or 800 miles per month, going to & from work & home now respectively. Lets examine monthly fuel vs electrical fuel costs for 800 miles

55 MPG for 800 miles means ~15 gallons of gasoline, rounding up slightly or $60 of fuel per month

30kWh per 100 miles means 240kWh @ $0.14/kWh or $33 per month or $24-30 locally

So LEAF electricity for 800 miles cost about 1/2 as much as fuel for a Prius for the same miles

This reminds me of by $0.04 per mile vs $0.09 per mile calculations back in 2013 for LEAF vs Prius meaning electricity cheaper than gasoline, so long as gasoline prices are higher and electricity costs are low, both subject to change and local market conditions that vary considerably worldwide. You can use my method with your numbers to find your personal relative comparison value of operating cost comparisons, all else being equal.

IRL or in real life or in reality, I buy about $80 of gasoline per month or spend about $20 per week to fuel my 05 Prius and Meg spends slightly less to fuel her slightly more efficient newer Prius since it gets closer to 50 MPG and I see more like 44 MPG. Fuelly.com has an interactive search function to let you examine the real world fuel economy averages of many vehicles from most automakers if you want to see for yourself how they perform relatively to each other. Given the scope of decarbonization & banning the sale of new gasoline only fueled cars in 2035, its government regulations, laws & measures against the automakers to force innovation that are driving EV sales & EV development & battery development.

Over the next 10 years EV battery technology will improve a lot, making 55-100 kWh EV batteries, rare-earth free EV IPM motors & SiC power electronics motor controllers more cost effective or cheaper, meaning Tesla slated to launch a sub-compact EV for $20,000 with a 45 kWh battery and 200 HP performance, that can be optioned up to over $30,000 fully loaded. Just as the $35,000 base price Model 3 can be optioned up to over $58,000 fully loaded Plaid edition etc respectively.

Is the Early Days for electric automobiles. Significantly there will be rapid improvements in range per charge such that many emerging EV will have 200, 300, 400, 500, 700, 1000 miles of range per charge as time marches on & electric vehicles continue to improve, specifically the batteries used to store & discharge electrical current in battery electric automobiles. This includes hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles like Toyota Mirai & Honda Clarity. Sodium-ion, Na-Al batteries, Metal Air batteries. New types of fuel cells that can work with propane & DME & other 2nd & 3rd gen biofuels like Green Hydrogen & much cheaper fuels like green natural gas or green CNG.

How do you charge an EV when there is a grid power outage ? With a portable electric generator with a socket neutral ground hot 1/2 watt resistor mod that you can find instructions for online, so you can use the supplied EV-SE charger to charge L1 at 1.6kW so as to pick up 2-5 miles of charge per hour of running your little gasoline generator.

I used a Honda EU2000i to charge our 2015 Nissan Leaf with the aforementioned plug-resistor mod to fake out the GFCI circuit in the EVSE so the generator without a proper ground can accomplish EV charging L1 speeds at 1600 watts of output.

A 13 fluid ounce oil change required every 25 hours of operation for that little generator & it only holds 1 gallon of gasoline, enough for EV charging for about 4 hours. So in 4 hours of charging the LEAF S 30kWh picked up about 15 miles of range from 1 gallon of gasoline, so that's a fuel economy net of 15 MPG // only really feasible in emergencies, noting that the EU2000 generator only converts about 19% of the 1 gallon of fuels 33.7 kWh of chemical energy into useful electrical energy output, that is then transferred at 95% electrical efficiency for Level 1 charging through the EV-SE charging cable that then achieves about 88% efficiency charging the laminate lithium manganese passive air cooled LEAF battery. At every stage the efficiency declines, explaining the 15 MPG result of this solution.

My 2005 Prius II has 158,000 miles and gets 43-48 miles per US gallon of regular gasoline, depending on driving style. When I leased a 2013 Nissan LEAF S $2,000 down & $200/mo with 24 kWh battery I was getting 5.3 miles per kWh. When I purchased $12,000 in 2018 a lightly used low mileage 2015 Nissan Leaf 30kWh I was getting 4.8 miles per kWh. Sadly both LEAF's are gone now. The first was leased and given back at the end of the lease, the later was traded in for my wife's 2010 Prius III. I really want a newer 60kWh LEAF SV Plus, but that would cost close to $40,000 and I do not want a $700 car payment. My 2005 Prius has depreciated to $2,000 trade in value or $3,000 fair market value. I would be perfectly happy with base model 40kWh LEAF, and thankfully those are closer to $30,000 grand, but would still result in a huge cash outlay, and $450 car payment every month. To have nice things you have to pay for them. In physics, nothing is free! They both go A to B so why do I want a new EV? I am crazy! I must be crazy to want a lower powered Nissan LEAF when a Tesla Model 3 would be even better, but I am not about owning a Tesla anything yet!

Meg said keep it under $20K for a used Nissan LEAF 40kWh battery lower mileage in good condition. We have the other hybrid for longer trips & only ever use 1 car when traveling together, so its ok & at any future point we can trade in the LEAF for another better EV or Plug-in Hybrid or ultra high efficiency automobile that is superlative like the Tesla Model 2 or whatever they are calling the cost optimized sedan that launches in by 2027 made in California or Nevada by Tesla Motors that will be the best value in the EV space by huge margins with new battery technology that's cheaper & better that the NCA NMC LFP lithium batteries in current Tesla EV's. The Nissan LEAF has an iconoclastic association in my mind with the emergent EV revolution & I have been a fan or liked it like the NISMO GTR, since 2009. She said, its to like you want some kind of stupid sports car or other wasteful fuel gobbling high powered high performance sports car or SUV, you asking to buy a cream puff lightly used Nissan LEAF, after using your Prius II for 17 years, its not that bad so don't judge yourself for wanting one & you have my blessing to get one as long as you keep the price under $20,000 out the door.

I dream of putting a roof rack on the LEAF & installing a folding set of all black mono-crystalline solar PV modular  that can unfold to make a 2KW solar PV array while its parked, sent to charge the LEAF battery pack for a couple hours per day, perhaps adding 1-8 kWh of captured solar PV energy, enough to drive 3-25 miles on stored sunlight. I think such a setup will cost about $6500 if I aggressively DIY all aspects of it.

It will cost a little more because it has to be a strong mount if I am every going to drive with it folded up at 70+ miles per hour or over 100km/h. It also has to be theft resistant with strong brackets that are very hard to undo without special tools, resistant to a battery powered angle grinder, with a HV electrical shock security system, 4G LTE notification system that sends messages to my Apple Watch or iPhone if someone is messing with it, so I can arm the HV coil inverter system to deliver a less than lethal but painful shock to some bad actor attempting to steal the wires or PV modules.

I will try to make it aerodynamic & low profile & completely water sealed. The Electrical interface the complex part, since the LEAF battery needs 400+ VDC to charge, or I can use micro-inverters on the PV panels & send AC to a modified charging cable setup to pump L1 charging at 1.6KW directly into the charger, like extension cord charging out of a standard electrical outlet at 2-5 miles of charge added per hour of charging. I also like the idea of getting the 60kWh LEAF since that would cover more than 10 days of my commuting too & from work on a single charge. Thankfully, sine 2018 the last time I had a LEAF S, the public L2 charging infrastructure has improved. They even added a bunch of EV charger parking spaces with pedestal dual L2 cable connectors to our Apartment parking lots.

The official plan now to buy a light used newer 40kWh Nissan LEAF outright, pay for it all cash & have no car payment. The Prius II going to Alan so he has a fuel efficient road-trip vehicle to use & that keeps Astro the Prius in the family :) Song & Dance discount for Alan too :)
