Cars are dangerous when driven by a bad driver or poorly skilled drivers & the same can be said of guns or knives or swords or anything sharp or dangerous, including toxic chemicals like gasoline in a handheld can or spray bottle. Government laws to stop "this or that gun" are never going to address the social, psychological or cultural problems that are causing "mass shootings" People need to feel like they are not being betrayed by their country & we have a history in America of outsourcing jobs & insourcing foreign works & marginalizing the middle class with inflation while billionaires become wealthier through merger & acquisition.
Social Health & Government
The real feeling of living in a country comes down to if the citizens feel taken care of by the government that elect to serve the public greater good, which is often only partially true in a flawed ways deformed by corruption & sleaze & greed & bribery & other conflicts of interest that give rise to toxic ultra processed foods being unregulated & popular when its widely known in medicine that regularly eating such items will cause metabolic syndrome disease *(insulin insulin insulin, diabetes, cancer & more)* What about your personal free will & agency to choose what you eat, how you drive, how you operate your gun or machine tools or other dangerous things around you house like cooking knives, microwave ovens, hair dryers, or other things like a stove that can burn or electrocute you or your children if misused.
Who is the Question, Not What! The Type of Gun Irrelevant
A machine gun with sound suppressor is perfectly safe in the hands of a trained soldier who uses it to protect & defend democracy in the ROC or India from communist haters & despots from dysfunctional countries with bad moral & people leaving left & right to escape like the PRC. Its not the format of the gun, its magazine capacity, the way it operates or what is made of that matters, its who controls the gun, its a people issue, the guns are just inanimate objects that require a human operator to be loaded or fire. No gun picks up its own ammo & shoots itself- thats just true & you know it!
A Gun Gives the Shooter Power
Guns throw a metal slug at high velocity using chemical energy, when a human pulls the trigger. Who pulls the trigger ? Its not the gun, but the gun in the wrong hands that creates the problems with guns. Guns are a deep part of American history, culture & the constitution via the second amendment. Who are we allowing to wield this deadly power ? Air pollution & car accidents kill a lot of people because of the actions of a few, but we are not exactly banning cars or SUV's or talking about outlawing hydrocarbon fuels.
Some Harm Unintentional or Accidental
A lot of car accidents are just that & a lot of pollution because its too expensive to upgrade this or that or not practical yet or some other non evil issue. Most people are decent & are not knowingly using 1-bromopropane at a foam factory to harm the workers, its just that was the first practical glue solvent that worked really well & we have to learn why something is bad before we adopt a suitable & often more costly alternative. Think NaCl or salt applied to roadways causes metal bridges to rust apart faster, when calcium magnesium acetate works to deice roadways without rusting or corroding metal infrastructure, but it also costs 3.5X more than salt commonly applied to roads for the same functional reason as a deicer.
We Are Called to Protect One Another as People
I am not some NRA blowhard, but I have a rational interpretation of "thou shall not kill" meaning that we are to never murder or randomly kill innocent people, but that also means we should use our arms to protect other people from psychopath killers. Public shootings have become a bigger problem in recent years. Watch the evening news & you will likely hear of a gun crime where someone killed someone or multiple other people with a gun. Guns are to America like swords are to Japan, an integral part of the history & traditions.
Some People Hurt Other People Sadly
No government law is ever going to keep a psychopath or sociopath from harming other people. What the government can do however, & fails to do, is to promote mental healthy & healthcare access thats affordable & accessible to all Americans with therapists, counselors, social workers & psychiatrists easily accessed by any disturbed person. The police who encounter such people should be able to mandate that these "sick" people get professional help & make sure that they actually do it, in order to address if the person is of a sound mind or what is causing their mental problems & then develop & implement a plan more intelligent than just putting the worst offenders in prison.
Psychiatric Hospitals
Some people are so mentally ill that they need to be contained & isolated from the general public & given professional psychiatric help, medication & special secured housing that keeps them from harming themselves & other people with violence or other sick methods using toxicology knowledge or other science to misuse common things that will never be outlawed to hurt people. A pen, made of plastic, for example can be used as a violent stabbing tool or shank & no one is talking about outlawing, restricting or banning high capacity cases of pens. Again the guns are not the problems, its who controls the guns that creates the issue. If most people are CC an EDC self protection weapon as an armed society, then those public shootings would have come to a stop long before the police showed up to clean up the dead bodies & document what happened with forms & paperwork.
