Enhance Lithium Ion Battery Longevity With Short Morning or Evening Charging Sessions!

This iWatch Series 1 charges on a magnetic inductive charging adapter mounted in an aluminum holder that suspends the iWatch for enhanced cooling while short interval charging for about 20-40min at a time! 

Lithium Cobalt : Carbon LiCo: C secondary rechargeable batteries are damaged by repeated 100% charging, especially if your consumer electronic devices are left connected to their chargers for long periods of time. 

I try to charge my smartphone (iPhone SE) and wearable electronics for 20-50 minutes depending on the state of charge when I start charging them. The goal is to keep the average state of charge close to ~55% as possible, shallow cycling to 30% and only charging up to 80%, trying to 

Avoid 100% Charging as much as possible. 

Many consumer electronic devices can charge from empty to fully charged in less than 2 hours. To keep the battery partially charged in "Long Life Battery Mode" the user must only charge the device for short time intervals that are faster than the full charge time.

For example if a device requires 2 hours to achieve a full charge from a very low state of charge, then charging for 30min to 1 hour max will help to keep the state of charge average close to 50% which greatly enhances the batteries long term performance. Every time a lithium ion battery is 100% charged it loses more of its capacity faster than if it were 80% charged.

Most consumer electronic devices are powered by a 3.6v (3.7 or 3.8 too) DC Lithium Ion battery made of a Lithium Cobalt Cathode & a Hard Carbon Anode. Fully charging to 4.2vdc damages this kind of battery by accelerating side reactions in the chemistry with added energy from thermal loading & charging energy.

Leaving electronics connected to a charger for long periods presents a fire risk because the fragile failure prone Lithium Ion batteries can vent with flame during a thermal runaway event that is well demonstrated by the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 battery burnup failures. Many poorly made chinese self balancing scooters or hoverboards similarly caught fire because of overcharging the lithium ion batteries.

A properly designed lithium ion battery management system prevents repeated full charging by cutting off the charge current at 4.10vdc for mild cell life enhancing or 3.9vdc for super long life mode. Float charging LiCo:C should never exceed 3.82vdc max.

Sadly, the chargers shipped with your consumer electronics are not programmable with a long life battery charging mode. This means the lithium ion battery will lose performance to an unacceptable levels after just 2 years of regular all night charging, common with smartphone users.

Car chargers are notorious for destroying phone batteries because of the poorly regulated voltage controller present in cheap poorly made chinese automotive 12v USB charging adapters. Always use high quality chargers and cables.

Avoid applying cable strain to your charging port as this can damage the charging port or the cable connector tip. I always recommend charging your electronics on a level table made of flame resistant materials like glass or metal, with no cable pulling or tension on the charging cable. Carefully line up the charging plug with the port and perform a clean precise insertion to prolong the life of your cable and charging port. Try to only charge for shorter periods of time while you are doing a timed event like cooking, cleaning, going for a short jog or any other short time interval event while you are awake.

You can set reminds to unplug your device from its charger by asking the digital assistant on your phone to set a reminder or to start timer. Amazon Alexa, Hey Google, Hey Siri, Hey Cortana. Any of these common voice activated digital assistants can set a timer reminder so you do not accidentally leave your device connected to its charger for long periods that would damage the battery faster. Many consumer electronics have sealed non-replacable lithium ion batteries that render the device less useful or practical to use with poor battery runtime.
